The metals were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The application of multivariate analysis showed that the honey colors are consequence of the mineral and physicochemical compositions. The darkest honey samples are characterized by higher values of pH and for presenting a strong relationship with Ca and Fe content.

Termos para indexação: Passiflora edulis, atmosfera modificada, perda de massa, pericarpo ABSTRACT -The high perishability of the yellow passion fruit reduce its postharvest conservation and availability, mainly for "in natura" consumption. This work objectified to increase the postharvest life of the yellow passion fruit by using wax emulsion and plastic film. After harvest, the fruits were selected, washed, disinfested and submitted to the treatments: 1, immersion in Fruit Wax ® ; 2, packing in plastic film; 3, immersion in Fruit Wax ® and packing plastic film and 4, control, fruits were immerged in water. The fruits were conditioned in trays and stored in ambient conditions. There were smaller percentage of fresh matter loss and larger water relative tenor when using the treatments two and three in the storage course. However there was no difference among the treatments regarding fresh matter of the fruit, peel and pulp having reduction in the course of storage. There was no difference in the relation of peel percentages and of pulp and pulp/peel relationship and the first reduced and following two increased in the storage. In general, there was total soluble solids and acidity reduction.

Research paper thumbnail of LASSBio-294, A Compound With Inotropic and Lusitropic Activity, Decreases Cardiac Remodeling and Improves Ca2+ Influx Into Sarcoplasmic Reticulum After Myocardial Infarction

Treatment to prevent MI-associated complications is currently lacking. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the remodeling and function of hearts subjected to experimental MI and to evaluate the response to treatment with a new thienylhydrazone: 3,4-methylenedioxybenzoyl-2-thienylhydrazone (LASSBio-294), which has demonstrated positive inotropic properties. LASSBio-294 (2 mg/kg) or vehicle (dimethyl sulfoxide) was administered daily by intraperitoneal injection for 4 weeks in sham-operated rats and rats with MI. Cardiac remodeling and hemodynamic parameters were monitored through histological and intraventricular pressure analyses. Intracellular Ca²(+) regulation (uptake and release) and the sensitivity of contractile proteins to Ca²(+) were evaluated by determining the contractile response of saponin-skinned cardiac cells from infarcted hearts. Cardiac hypertrophy occurred at 4 weeks post-MI and was partially reverted by treatment with LASSBio-294. LASSBio-294 treatment also reduced the nuclear density, collagen volume fraction, and left ventricular end-diastolic pressure (LV EDP) induced by MI. MI led to reduced Ca²(+) uptake from the SR, but did not modify the Ca²(+) release or the Ca²(+)-force relationship. LASSBio-294 restored SR function and enhanced the sensitivity of contractile proteins to Ca²(+). LASSBio-294 is a promising candidate for improving intracellular Ca²(+) regulation and preventing MI-induced cardiac dysfunction, which could potentially prevent heart failure (HF).

Their activity on rat-insulin-secreting cells and rat aorta rings was compared to that of the K(ATP) channel activators (+/-)-cromakalim, diazoxide, (+/-)-pinacidil, and compound 4. Structure-activity relationships indicated that the most pronounced inhibitory activity on the pancreatic tissue was obtained by introducing a meta- or para-electron-withdrawing group (a chlorine atom) on the C-4 phenyl ring (drugs 37-42). Such molecules, unlike the parent compound (+/-)-cromakalim, also exhibited a high selectivity for the pancreatic tissue versus the vascular tissue. Radioisotopic and electrophysiological investigations performed with R/S-6-chloro-4-(3-chlorophenylaminocarbonylamino)-3,4-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-2H-1-benzopyran (38) confirmed that the drug activated pancreatic KATP channels.

Research paper thumbnail of Demand-Driven Tag Recommendation

Collaborative tagging allows users to assign arbitrary keywords (or tags) describing the content ... more Collaborative tagging allows users to assign arbitrary keywords (or tags) describing the content of objects, which facilitates navigation and improves searching without dependence on pre-configured categories. In large-scale tag-based systems, tag recommendation services can assist a user in the assignment of tags to objects and help consolidate the vocabulary of tags across users. A promising approach for tag recommendation is to exploit the co-occurrence of tags. However, these methods are challenged by the huge size of the tag vocabulary, either because (1) the computational complexity may increase exponentially with the number of tags or (2) the score associated with each tag may become distorted since different tags may operate in different scales and the scores are not directly comparable. In this paper we propose a novel method that recommends tags on a demand-driven basis according to an initial set of tags applied to an object. It reduces the space of possible solutions, so that its complexity increases polynomially with the size of the tag vocabulary. Further, the score of each tag is calibrated using an entropy minimization approach which corrects possible distortions and provides more precise recommendations. We conducted a systematic evaluation of the proposed method using three types of media: audio, bookmarks and video. The experimental results show that the proposed method is fast and boosts recommendation quality on different experimental scenarios. For instance, in the case of a popular audio site it provides improvements in precision (p@5) ranging from 6.4% to 46.7% (depending on the number of tags given as input), outperforming a recently proposed co-occurrence based tag recommendation method.

Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research, 1997

To investigate the behavioral effects of different vehicles microinjected into the dorsal periaqu... more To investigate the behavioral effects of different vehicles microinjected into the dorsal periaqueductal grey (DPAG) of male Wistar rats, weighing 200-250 g, tested in the elevated plus maze, animals were implanted with cannulas aimed at this structure. One week after surgery the animals received microinjections into the DPAG of 0.9% (w/v) saline, 10% (v/v) dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), 2% (v/v) Tween-80, 10% (v/v) propylene glycol, or synthetic cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Ten min after the injection (0.5 microliters) the animals (N = 8-13/group) were submitted to the elevated plus maze test. DMSO significantly increased the number of entries into both the open and enclosed arms when compared to 0.9% saline (2.7 +/- 0.8 and 8.7 +/- 1.3 vs 0.8 +/- 0.3 and 5.1 +/- 0.9, respectively. Duncan test, P < 0.05), and tended to increase enclosed arm entries as compared to 2% Tween-80 (8.7 +/- 1.3 vs 5.7 +/- 0.9, Duncan test, P < 0.10). In a second experiment no difference in plus maze exploration was found between 0.9% saline-or sham-injected animals (N = 11-13/group). These results indicate that intra-DPAG injection of some commonly used vehicles such as DMSO, saline or Tween-80 affects the exploratory activity of rats exposed to the elevated plus maze in statistically different manners.

Research paper thumbnail of Mercury distribution, speciation and flux in the Sepetiba Bay tributaries, SE Brazil

The average Hg concentrations found varied from 0.02 to 0.18 ng L À1 for dissolved gaseous Hg, from 0.1 to 18.1 ng L À1 for reactive Hg, from 0.1 to 66.6 ng L À1 for total dissolved Hg and from 0.3 to 250 ng L À1 for particulate Hg. During the rainy season, a decrease in the dissolved Hg concentrations and an increase in the particulate Hg concentrations was observed. Positive correlations were found between the reactive Hg and the total dissolved Hg concentrations ðr ¼ 0:99Þ; between the particulate Hg and TSS concentrations ðr ¼ 0:82Þ and between total Hg and particulate Hg concentrations ðr ¼ 0:95Þ: The instantaneous Hg fluxes varied among rivers from 0.02 to 412 mg s À1 for total dissolved Hg and from 0.03 to 12,572 mg s À1 for particulate Hg. The log K d varied from 3.76 to 6.43 and showed a significant increase in rainy season following an increase in particulate Hg and a decrease in dissolved Hg concentrations. These results suggest that erosion and runoff are the major pathways of Hg transport to rivers and eventually to Sepetiba Bay. r
