However, due to the specific position and status occupied by most Asians in comparison to the majority of Africans since colonial rule, segregation and tensions expressed in racial terms have been significant features of such relationships. The case on the city of Kisumu, in Nyanza region, illustrates this argument about identity formation and race relations against the backdrop of the social, political and economic history in Nyanza region.

The argument put forth here is that the term diaspora evokes geographies of Identity and makes the whole Asian community a subject of study not only globally but also locally. The theoretical formulation underpinning this study is explored with the post-colonialtheoretical framework taking center stage as the tool of analysis. The Indian question within the Kenyan context is raised in this chapter as the basis upon which Afro-Asian socioeconomic and political contestations were anchored on. It is against this background that Afro-Asian socio-economic relations in Nyanza and Western provinces of Kenya are discussed. These discussions are supported by epistemological and empirical evidence obtained from oral informants, secondary and primary data across the two provinces of study.

It helps to share experience and captures the contradictions and dynamics prevalent in society. In Kenya, every election has been characterized by the use of popular music and other types of popular means of expression. Songs as well as riddles and proverbs are consistently being used during electoral campaigns. This was evident during the 2017 general election during which Raila Odinga, the National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential candidate, campaigned through popular music and used proverbs and riddles to draw his supporters behind him. This chapter examines some of Raila’s campaign speeches to further understand the importance and efficiency of oratory style and popular culture for political mobilization and identity construction in Kenya.

As early as the first century, East African Coast had already started witnessing the emergence of traders from Asia especially the Chinese who brought porcelain and other trade items along the coast of East Africa. Towards the end of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth century, globalization took a new dimension due to imperialism and colonialism. These two processes opened up the worl...

It examines the roots of Asian presence in the Nyanza region and explores the various levels of interactions between the Asian ethnicities and the Africans within the post-colonial space of Nyanza. Although the literature review demonstrates that some research on the Asian Question in East Africa has been undertaken by a number of scholars, there is little evidence to show that Afro - Asian relations in Nyanza Province has been given scholarly attention. This hiatus makes the study abundantly significant and justified. The study revolves around four fundamental premises. It proposes that forced immigration played a remarkable role in the emergence of interracial relations between Africans and Asians in Kisumu, Ndere, Kendu Bay and Yala areas of Nyanza region. Besides, it assumes that government policies were the main causes of suspicion, tension and conflict between ...

The fact that the creation of the East African states was a result of conflict in Europe cannot be underestimated. And therefore, the reorganization of boundaries among Africans and African states by the colonial masters was bound to generate conflict in the postcolonial period. True to this, the postcolonial states in East Africa were engulfed in civil strife leading to forced migration, displacements and the rise of refugee crises within the region. States such as Rwanda, Burundi, Sudan, South Sudan and Somalia symbolized the refugee crisis in this region. The colonial governments had laid the foundation of modern health systems in Africa and East Africa in particular, and the postcolonial governments inherited this system, which informed the whole idea of preventive and curative measures as far as health matters were concerned. The medical needs of the refugees would, therefore,...
