Sperm integrity is one of the most carefully examined characteristics for artificial insemination... more Sperm integrity is one of the most carefully examined characteristics for artificial insemination in humans and mammals. Techniques have been developed to assess the sperm plasma membrane integrity. Some of them need a well-trained evaluation for correctness, as is the case of the triple stain technique; others are time-consuming and need special equipment, varying from specially adapted microscopes to computer-based analyzers. The authors report the use of fluorescein-labeled peanut agglutinin plus a fluorescein extender that permits an easy evaluation for pig spermatozoa membrane integrity. Sperm integrity in pigs was evaluated before and after zona pellucida-induced acrosome reaction in capacitated sperm. The sperm acrosome reaction was affected when the zona pellucida was reduced.

By interacting with seven proteins so far, namely disheveled (DVL), protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A), phosphofructokinase-1 (PFK1), translocation protein SEC63 homolog (SEC63), myeloid differentiation primary response gene-88 (MYD88), flightless-I (FLII), and calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II type alpha (CAMK2A), NXN is involved in the regulation of several key cellular processes, including proliferation, organogenesis, cell cycle progression, glycolysis, innate immunity and inflammation, motility, contraction, protein transport into the endoplasmic reticulum, neuronal plasticity, among others; as a result, NXN has been implicated in different pathologies, such as cancer, alcoholic and polycystic liver disease, liver fibrogenesis, obesity, Robinow syndrome, diabetes mellitus, Alzheimer’s disease, and retinitis pigm...

Coumestrol (COU) is an organic compound with estrogenic activity, thus having the potential to alter reproduction in mammals. COU is commonly dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) before administration; however, evidence indicates that DMSO is not inert. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of either a single oral administration of COU diluted in DMSO or of DMSO-alone, on serum progesterone (P4) and estradiol (E2), on vaginal cell pattern, and on anestrus and diestrus lengths in bitches. Fifteen anestrus female dogs received either a single commercial dog food biscuit (Control, n=5), a biscuit with 600 μg of COU/kg diluted in 20 μL of DMSO (COU, n=5), or a biscuit with 20 μL of DMSO (DMSO, n=5). Circulating P4, E2, and changes in vaginal cytology, were assessed within the first month after trea...

The role of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the etiology and pathogenesis of cutaneous tuberculosis... more The role of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the etiology and pathogenesis of cutaneous tuberculosis is controversial because of the difficulties associated with demonstrating the presence of these mycobacteria in tuberculid cutaneous lesions by routinely available microbiological and histological techniques. In this study, we aimed to demonstrate the presence of M. tuberculosis in cutaneous tuberculosis. Multiple polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed by nested PCR was used to amplify genomic fragments from 3 different mycobacteria species. DNA was isolated from 30 paraffin-embedded skin biopsies. Samples were selected randomly from patients with a clinical and histopathological diagnosis of the most frequent groups of cutaneous tuberculosis in Mexico as follows: 5 cases of scrofuloderma tuberculosis; 2 cases of lupus vulgaris tuberculosis; and 5 cases of tuberculosis verrucosa cutis. The other cases denominated tuberculids in some countries such as Mexico and included the following: 7 cases of rosacea-like tuberculosis; one case of papulonecrotic tuberculosis; and 10 cases of erythema induratum of Bazin. Four normal skin biopsies were included as controls. M. tuberculosis DNA was amplified successfully by nested PCR in 80% of the samples (24 of the 30 samples) assayed. Mycobacterial DNA was not detected in the normal skin biopsies used as controls. Detection of M. tuberculosis DNA in 80% of cutaneous tuberculosis analyzed implicates this mycobacterium in the pathogenesis of multiple clinical forms of cutaneous tuberculosis.

A. Allen and Chapman, 1897, that differin their population density and in its seasonal fluctuations, even though they inhabit in quite similar habitat conditions. Although an affirmative answer to this question would corroborate the idea that this androgen has a density-dependent effect, since it has been proposed that T increases at low densities and vice versa, our results did not confirm this thesis: T showed no differences between the two populations, since both had the same seasonal pattern for the androgen, throughout four years of study, with a maximum in the summer, as would be expected in this temperate species whose reproductive optimum occurs at that time of the year. Therefore, density differences between both populations must be rather due to subtle microhabitat differences.

Method: The genomic DNA of 23 drug-resistant epilepsy patients and 7 patients with good responses were analyzed. Ten exons in these four genes were genotyped, and the drug concentrations in saliva and plasma were determined. Results: The relevant SNPs with pharmacogenomics relations were CYP2D6*2 (rs16947) decreased your activity and CYP2D6*4 (rs1065852), CYP2C19*2 (rs4244285) and CYP3A4*1B (rs2740574) by association with poor metabolizer. The strongest risk factors were found in the AA genotype and allele of SNP rs3892097 from the CYP2D6 gene, followed by the alleles A and T of SNPs rs2740574 and rs2687116, respectively from CYP3A4. The most important concomitance was between homozygous genotype AA of rs3892097 and genotype AA of rs2740574 with 78.3% in drug-resistant epilepsy patients as compared to 14.3% in control patients. Conclusion: The results demonstrated the important role of the CYP 3A4*1B allelic variant as risk factor for developing drug resistance and CYP2D6, CYP2C19 SNPs and haplotypes may affect the response to antiepileptic drugs.

PTE derive from isoflavones, lignans, and coumestans, phenolic fluorescent compounds that can be detected through thin layer chromatography. Here we evaluate the presence of these three groups in the feces of adult males of A. jamaicensis, by means of representative analites (genistein, GEN; zearalenone, ZEA; coumestrol, COU, respectively) in order to verify: a) which analites were present, and b) whether they had a temporal pattern or they remained constant along the year. We further examined if we could qualitatively link temporal patterns of phytochemicals with the reproductive activity of males, using the position of their testes. Although we detected neither presence of GEN, ZE...

Water extracts of several plants have vaginal contraceptive properties. The authors evaluated the sperm agglutinating activity of two Bursera species on human and boar sperm. Extracts from stems and leaves were obtained. Capacitated sperm samples were used in all cases. There were different agglutinating capacities, which were not observed in the vehicle-only samples. The most frequent sperm agglutination response was that involving the heads. Agglutinating activity was higher from stem- than leaf-derived extracts. The results indicate that proteins present in the extracts are responsible for the aggregation of sperm heads.
