In her contribution, Heike Behrend will discuss the global flow of photographic images and the co... more In her contribution, Heike Behrend will discuss the global flow of photographic images and the complicated processes of localization in Mombasa, a cosmopolitan town of the East African Coast. While the Likoni Photographers, a group of migrant workers from the “hinterland”, made use of images of the global flow, of exotic places and landscapes all over the world to produce a highly original cosmopolitan imaginary space in their studios that detached themselves from the logic of a fixed place, Muslim inhabitants of old town increasingly invoke the Islamic interdiction of images and notions of purity to control the flow of photographs, especially the photographs of women. Taking the two examples, Heike Behrend will deal with the making and unmaking of boundaries and the different constructions of locality within the background of the dialectics of flow and closure.
