The protection and good management of the groundwater resource are essential. The present work is part of the monitoring of the hydrogeochemical evolution and quality of groundwater in the Oued Kert basin (Mediterranean zone, Driouch Province, eastern Morocco); by determining the concentrations of major ions and contamination indices. Sampling was carried out by ISO 5665 standard. Besides the arithmetic analysis of the statistics by the principle components analysis, the interpretation of the analytical data about the phenomena responsible for the mineralization was also carried out using the hydrochemical classification, resulting from the Piper diagram. The waters of the basin are characterized by strong to weak medium to low mineralization (760 < EC < 9500 μS∙cm−1), where more than 30% samples showed nitrate concentrations above the world standard. On microbiological level, the study reports the existence of bacteria: coliforms (0 CFU.100 mL−1 < FC < 850 CFU.100 mL−1), Streptococcus Fecal (0 CFU.100 mL−1 < FS < 330 CFU.100 mL−1). The presence of high levels of fecal bacteria, confirming the influence of septic tanks, and the usage of animal waste on groundwater vulnerability.

The following environmental parameters have been considered: to, salinity, nutrients - inorganic P, N and dissolved Si, dissolved oxygen and oxygen saturation, phytoplankton - taxonomic structure, abundance and biomass, chlorophyll a, zooplankton - taxonomic structure, abundance and biomass. Principal Component Analysis was applied in order to figure out and score the most relevant combination of parameters to discriminate between sites and select representative descriptors (pressure/state) of eutrophication. The following variables are defined as relevant descriptors for classification of the sites: nutrients (N, P, Si) and their molar ratios (N:P and Si:P), the capacity o...

Simulation of rainfall-runoff is therefore an important element in assessing the impacts of serious flooding. In the present study, rainfall-runoff in the Nekkor watershed in Al Hoceima province was simulated using GIS, remote sensing and the Hydrologic Engineering Center Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS) model. The applicability, capacity and suitability of this model for rainfall runoff in the watershed were examined. The watershed parameters were generated using (HEC-GeoHMS) and ArcGIS. The model was calibrated using a daily data set that occurred in the watershed between 2003 and 2007, the validation period was from 2009 to 2012. Model performance was evaluated using a variety of different statistical indices to study the response and impact of rainfall-runoff. Model parameters were changed and calibration was performed using the Soi...

Within this project’s scope, we investigated groundwater contamination in the suburban community of Ain Zohra (located in the Mediterranean zone, Driouch province, eastern part of Morocco). The Zohra area is limited in east part by the rural municipality of Ain Zohra, in the north part by Driouch city and in the southern and western parts is bounded by the Boubker rural municipality. In July 2021, 21 samples were taken from the field (20 wells and 1 spring). In general, the results of this study showed that some water wells are highly mineralized as the conductivity is far above the drinking water standard. Every well’s pH is basic. Nitrate contamination in two places shows that the permeability of city soil affects the groundwater. The nitrate content might be higher than groundwater, which has 200 mg/l. In certain wells, groundwater contamination has raised orga...

Recently, groundwater pollution has emerged as one of the most severe environmental challenges, with a particular emphasis on levels of heavy metal pollution. Conservation efforts and efficient management of groundwater resources are required to determine the full scope of this damage. The current research answers the physical-chemical evaluation of the middle Kert basin’s water quality (Mediterranean area, Driouch province, Eastern Morocco) by collecting 42 samples and measuring pH, TDS that vary between 451 and 5841 mg/l, and EC that range from 0.72 to 9.41mS/cm2 according to ISO 5665. The samples were analyzed by ICP-MS and flame atomic absorption spectrometry to detect fluoride and arsenic content. Whose fluoride in the survey area varied from 0.01 mg/l to 2.85 mg/l. However, the irrational exploitation of water and natural conditions have generated the rise of the water table and the increase in pollution. Thus, the assessment of water quality has emerged as a significant concern. This study’s goal is to assess the adequacy of groundwater quality in two aquifers in the vicinity of the Mediterranean Zone - Drouich Province and Oriental Region, Morocco, for drinking water needs by taking 62 water samples of the Kert aquifer for 2019. The Water Quality Index (WQI) classifies water quality: as excellent, good, poor, very poor, etc. That is essential for conveying information about water quality to people and decision-makers in the affected area. The WQI in the Kert aquifer varies from 62.3 to 392.3. The calculation of the water quality index (WQI) of the Kert aquifer view is based that 45.16% of groundwater samples are o...

The current study employed the statistical analysis and multilayer perceptron (MLP) approaches for predicting groundwater quality in the Ghiss-Nekkor aquifer, northeast of Al Hoceima, Morocco. Fifty sampled groundwater were identified and analyzed for major anions and cations throughout May 2019. Several physicochemical parameters of all the samples were identified in this investigation, such as TDS, pH, EC, Na, K, Ca, Mg, HCO3, NO3, Br, SO4, and Cl. The entropy-weighted groundwater quality index (EWQI) was calculated from these parameters. The WQI procedure determined the suitability of groundwater for consumption. The WQI value varied from 90.98 to 337.28. The EC, TDS, WQI, and Cl− spatial distribution showed that EC and Cl− are associated with poor groundwater quality. A single sample (W16) represented unsuitable water for drinking purposes and offered a WQI value of 337.28, indica...

Soil salinity is currently considered as a major environmental problem. This issue is accentuated... more Soil salinity is currently considered as a major environmental problem. This issue is accentuated by climate change, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. In these areas, drought and high level of salt in soils and irrigated waters are the main abiotic factors limiting plant growth and productivity. On the other hand, rapid population growth and reduction of arable land are major factors that could affect food security. Regarding salt tolerance, most crop plants show sensitivity to high salt levels, but it differs strongly between species and slightly between cultivars within the same species. Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) is an important economic crop and is sensitive to salinity. To enhance cucumber performance and resistance to high levels of NaCl, different strategies can be employed, In recent decades, an increased research interest has been devoted to develop new strategies to overcome the deleterious effects of salinity on cucumber plants by using molecular markers and ge...

The margin used in the studies was collected from a semi-modern oil mill located in the Nador–Morocco region. The results of the physico-chemical analyses showed that the effluents of the oil mills showed that they are highly polluted, particularly in terms of the total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and iron content of around 154.82 (mg/L), and copper content of 31.72 (mg/L). The mineralogy of bentonites studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) reveals the existence of two types of montmorillonite; theoretically, the diffraction peak (001) of the montmorillonite appears at 15 Å, with a basal spacing that corresponds to a calcium pole, and the diffraction peak (001) appears at 12Å, with a basal spacing that corresponds to a sodium pole. The present study investigated the bioaccumulation of heavy metals in the soil–rice system in the Enshi seleniferous area of central China. Soils were contaminated by Mo, Cu, As, Sb, Zn, Cd, Tl, and Hg caused by the weathering of Se‐rich shales. Among these heavy metals, Cd and Mo had the highest bioavailability in soils. The bioavailable fractions of Cd and Mo accounted for 41.84 and 10.75% of the total Cd and Mo in soils, respectively. Correspondingly, much higher bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) of Cd (0.34) and Mo (0.46) were found in rice, compared with those of other heavy metals (Zn 0.16, Cu 0.05, Hg 0.04, and Sb 0.0002). For the first time—to our knowledge—we showed that the uptake of Hg, Cd, and Cu by rice could be inhibited by the presence of Se in the soil. The probable daily intake (PDI) of Se, Cd, Mo, Zn, and Cu through consumption of local rice was 252 ± 184, 314 ± 301, and 1774 ± 1326 μg/d; and 7.4 ± 1.68 and 0.87 ± 0.35 mg/d, respectively. The high hazard quotients (HQs) of Mo (1.97 ± 1.47) and Cd (5.22 ± 5.02) suggested a high risk of Cd and Mo for Enshi residents through consumption of rice.
