However the application properties of waterborne trim paints still need to be improved. Especially the open time and wet edge time of the applied paint needs to be improved in order to obtain the same high quality level that was possible with conventional solvent-borne trim paints. In this paper new methods are described that can be used to study the fundamental aspects of the open time of paint films. The influence of binder and co-binder composition and morphology is studied. Also the influence of the pigment type and additive package on the application properties has been investigated. These new insights have led to the development of a new hybrid binder concept that offers significantly improved open time.

However, the application properties of waterborne trim paints still need to be improved. Especially the open time and wet edge time of the applied paint needs to be improved in order to obtain the same high quality level that was possible with conventional solvent-borne trim paints. New developments on the formulation of a white top coat for application on wood are presented. This elucidated several critical paint components with regard to open time and general properties of the paint. The model of extended phase inversion by hybrid resin design is further elaborated and supported by new data.

The presentation highlights the research approach of the technology, the application in paint and the experiences in the marketplace. The solutions as presented here, are not brand new technologies, but more second or even third generations that were developed during experiences in the market over the last five years. Small alterations in our resin technology, often meant significant improvements in the paint application. Also can be seen that green solutions differ not only per market segment (e.g. refinishes versus plastic coatings) but also per country or even reg...

As a result of the Solvents Emission Directive. VOC emissions have been considerably reduced as of January 1 st 2007 and a further reduction of allowable VOCs is due as of 2010. These limiting values are applicable for decorative coatings that are not applied in installations where emissions can be controlled. The emission reductions needed by 2010 can only be achieved by the use of water-borne or with high solids solvent- borne products As most of the wall paints are already waterborne, special attention has to be given to trim paints, varnishes, primers and performance coatings. In this paper the approaches Nuplex Resins is following for the development of VOC-compliant solvent-borne trim paints are discussed.

One of these subjects is related to the open time that can be achieved by a certain coating. Waterborne coatings are well-known, in decorative applications, for lacking good open time performance as compared with solvent-borne paints. The following chapter reveals the work carried out by our group on the development of polymeric binders and formulations with extended open time. The first part shows basic definitions and examples regarding the open time and different methods for measuring it. The second part will describe the different technologies from the synthesis point of view of the polymeric binders developed to improve the open time. Subsequently, the insights of a mathematical model to predict open time will be discussed. The chapter will be closed with the description of the eff...
