It addresses five key areas in its discussion of transportation and national development. First, it tries to conceptualize transportation and national development. Second, it tries to provide a historical brief of the role of transportation in the evolution of the Nigerian nation. Third, it discusses the developments in the different modes of transportation from the colonial period to date. Fourth, it tries to examine the impact of transportation on Nigeria’s national development from three perspectives viz: economic, social and political. It observes that apart from lumping transportation and communication together in the budgetary allocation of resources, what is allocated to the sector is inadequate, given the crucial role of transportation in the mo...

It conceptualizes corruption as “putrefaction, tainting, debasement, perversion or venality, spoiling, destruction of purity or falling away from standard of integrity or rectitude defined by law, upheld by social norms or conscience or recognized by the general conscience of mankind. It discovers the pervasiveness of corruption in all the various administration of the country military and civilian alike. Corruption is an albatross in the wheel of the country’s development. The paper argues that given the kid gloves with which corruption is treated in Nigeria every development effort will continue to fail and Nigeria will die if the necessary steps are not taking. Corruption is therefore anti-developmental because all the indices of development are affected negatively by it. As a way forward the paper recommends a...

This study examines the mediating effect of literacy on population growth-life expectancy nexus in Nigeria. The study adopts an econometrics technique (Toda-Yamamoto) in analysing the data and these data are time series data spanning from 1981-2018. The study revealed that Life expectancy reacted positively to the movement in population‟s growth rate and tertiary institution enrolment rate. This result justified the importance of higher education in mediating in the population-life expectancy nexus in Nigeria. Worthy of note is the fact that the most expected impact on Life expectancy comes from the most active population (age 15-64) and the knowledge acquired in tertiary institutions of learning, a proxy for literacy. This study therefore concludes that literacy has a mediating effect on population growth-life expectanc...

The paper highlights the features of underdevelopment in Nigeria. These range from, high rate of unemployment, inegalitarian distribution of income and wealth, high level of insecurity, increase level of absolute poverty low level of social and political consciousness, to an increase in illiteracy rate, poor health services, housing condition and government services to mention but a few. It concludes that the underdevelopment of Nigeria is cause by the politico economic system she adopts. This is anchored on the following reasons; first, in Nigeria what determines a person status is the amount of wealth he is able to accumulate. Second, is that in Nigeria it is possible and indeed easy for people to cheat the entire society and get away with it. This is because we don’t ask questions about peoples’ wealth, but we revere them. To salvage the situation the paper recomm...

It examines the relationship between democracy and development, using a contextual analysis of the Nigerian democratic experience. The key concepts, democracy, and development were ventilated as to make for a better understanding. Democracy as practiced in Nigeria is denied of its life blood, that is the peoples’ right to vote. It is democracy without the people. The article therefore concluded that given the corrupt nature of our politicians, the manner and way in which power to govern is acquired, their recklessness and insensitivity every development effort will definitely fail and continue to fail. In the circumstance, the article considers people oriented government and the shunning of every corrupt practice as a highly useful and pivotal option. This paper examines Nigeria’s population policy and Programmes and the implications of their practical application to achieve national development in the 21st century, considering the events in the country since 1999. The paper argues that looking at the population policies of China, India and Nigeria, and considering the trend of events in the country since the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led government in 1999, the Nigerian population policy can be said to be neither antinatalistic nor pro-natalistic but genocidal and anti-Niger Deltans, as its implementation is guided by political selfish interests. It concludes that the Nigerian national p...

It conceptualizes insecurity as the worthlessness of life and property because of its unsafe or unprotected nature which creates panic in the lives of the people. The paper stresses that today no single issue has dominated the Nigerian scene more than insecurity of life and property. The anxiety and concern for it can only be compared with the anxiety and concern that gripped the international community in the immediate Post-Second World War years over the possibility of a nuclear holocaust. The above has been buttressed by the litany of kidnaps and killings in Nigeria. The various causes of this insecurity were pointed out and the imperativeness of the Integrated Conflict Management Approach to quelling was emphasized. The paper concludes by stressing that the immediate and remote causes of this ugly monster (insecurity) should be addressed via integrated conflict management app...
