Because breastfeeding duration and exclusivity have been associated in observational studies with improved cardiovascular health, optimizing breastfeeding in those with HDP might be an unrealized cardio-prevention approach, in particular because individuals with HDP have more breastfeeding challenges. Breastfeeding supportive interventions targeting one’s breastfeeding self-efficacy have been shown to improve breastfeeding rates. Methods We designed an open-label, multi-center 1:1 randomized behavioral trial to test whether a previously validated self-efficacy enhancing breastfeeding intervention can improve breastfeeding duration and/or exclusivity, and lower postpartum blood pressure at 12 months. However, in families where one child has an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis, the dynamics between siblings may be different than in families with typically developing children due to the associated deficits in communication. Therefore, this mixed-method study examined the perceptions of six typically developing children regarding their relationship with a sibling with autism. Parents were heterosexual couples, and families were white and mostly middle class. Semi-structured interviews and questionnaires regarding the sibling relationship were administered to the typically developing child. Identification of major themes followed by focused coding was conducted to capture the essence of what was said and to categorize the most frequent themes. Overall, typically developing children highlighted both positive and negative features of ...

A challenge faced by parents of a child with ASD is the process of obtaining a diagnosis and services for their child. In this collective case study, we interviewed six mothers in a large Canadian city who had at least one child with an ASD diagnosis. We asked about their experience obtaining a formal diagnosis, support, and how they perceived their children’s educational experience. Mothers highlighted the difficulties and barriers they encountered, as well the importance of support. Implications of such findings are discussed.
