Therefore, the accurate description of these step-discontinuties is important for the computer-aided design of conventional and monolithic MICs.

This work presents the application of neuro-fuzzy techniques to develop a rule-based fuzzy system... more This work presents the application of neuro-fuzzy techniques to develop a rule-based fuzzy system as an efficient and robust approach for object tracking based on sequences of video images. The fuzzy system is a new approach for data association problems in video image sequences, which uses JPDA formulation adapted to cope with video data peculiarities. The neurofuzzy learning algorithm uses examples extracted from a surveillance system of airport surface, including situations with very closely spaced objects (aircraft and surface vehicles moving on apron). The learned fuzzy system ponders update decisions both for the trajectories and shapes estimated for targets with the set of image regions (blobs) extracted from each frame. The inputs of the neuro-fuzzy system are several numeric heuristics, describing the quality of gated groups of blobs and predicted tracks, and outputs are confidence levels used in the update process. Rules are aimed to generate the most appropriate decisions under different conditions, emulating the reasoned decisions taken by an expert, and have been learned by the neuro-fuzzy system. The system performance with real image sequences of representative ground operations is shown at the end.

The pathogenic mechanism triggering muscle wasting is unknown. This study examined structural, functional, and metabolic changes conducive to muscle degeneration in Krabbe disease using the murine (twitcher mouse) and canine [globoid cell leukodystrophy (GLD) dog] models. Muscle degeneration, denervation, neuromuscular [neuromuscular junction (NMJ)] abnormalities, and axonal death were investigated using the reporter transgenic twitcher-Thy1.1-yellow fluorescent protein mouse. We found that mutant muscles had significant numbers of smaller-sized muscle fibers, without signs of regeneration. Muscle growth was slow and weak in twitcher mice, with decreased maximum force. The NMJ had significant levels of activated caspase-3 but limited denervation. Mutant NMJ showed reduced surface areas and lowe...

Identifying genetically and phenotypically distinct populations of threatened species is critical... more Identifying genetically and phenotypically distinct populations of threatened species is critical if we are to delineate appropriate plans for their conservation. We conducted an integrated analysis of population genetic structure, historical demographic events, current gene flow (all based on mtDNA sequences) and morphological variation of three geographically separated groups of populations of Dupont's lark Chersophilus duponti, located in the Iberian Peninsula (three populations), Morocco (two populations), and Tunisia (one population). Unusually, this lark species is the only one among the genus Chersophilus. Our results revealed the early historical divergence of an eastern Dupont's lark lineage (in Tunisia) and a western lineage (in Morocco and Spain), consistent with subspecies taxonomy and distribution. The western lineage subsequently split into two lineages, following the isolation of Iberian and African populations. Such pattern of historical differentiation cause...

We present here a framework with simulation capabilities for sensor fusion in aerial vehicles. Thanks to its abstraction level it only requires a few high level properties for defining a whole experiment. Its modular design offers flexibility and makes easy to complete its functionality. Finally, it includes a set of tools for fast development and more accurate analysis of the experimental results.

It summarizes the algorithmic foundations of the high-accuracy trajectory reconstruction process used to obtain reference trajectories from recorded measures. These trajectories will serve as a reference for the evaluation of the accuracy of ATC data processing centers. The performance of the system is illustrated with some reconstruction experiments on synthetic and real data.

Calcium channels mediate excitation-contraction coupling and are essential for the function of muscle. However, little is known about the expression of calcium channel subunits and calcium handling in stem cells. We examined whether the expression of calcium channel subunits in MSC is similar to that of skeletal muscle satellite cells and if their levels of expression are modified after treatment with bone morphogenetic protein-4 (BMP4). We found that during myogenic differentiation, MSC first express the α2δ1 subunit and the cardiac channel subunit Cav1.2. In contrast to the α2δ1 subunit levels, the Cav1.2 subunit decreases rapidly with time. The skeletal channel subunit Cav1.1 is detected at day 3 but its expression increases considerably, resembling more closely the expression of the subunits in satellite cells. Treatment of MSC with BMP4 caused a significant increase in expression of Cav1.2, a delay in expression of Cav1.1, and a reduction in the duration of calcium transients when extracellular calcium was removed. Calcium currents and transients followed a pattern related to the expression of the cardiac (Cav1.2) or skeletal (Cav1.1) α1subunits. These results indicate that differentiation of untreated MSC resembles differentiation of skeletal muscle and that BMP4 reduces skeletal muscle calcium channel expression and promotes the expression of cardiac calcium channels during myogenic differentiation.
