Some inflammatory proteins, such as cyclooxygenase (COX)-2, are believed to be implicated in the development of MMD. So far, the relationship between COX-2 and MMD is poorly understood and reports on the intracranial vessels of MMD patients are scanty. In this study, tiny pieces of middle cerebral artery (MCA) and superficial temporal artery (STA) from 13 MMD patients were surgically harvested. The MCA and STA samples from 5 control patients were also collected by using the same technique. The expression of COX-2 was immunohistochemically detected and the average absorbance (A) of positively-stained areas was measured. High-level COX-2 expression was found in all layers of the MCA samples from all 5 hemorrhagic MMD patients, while positive but weak expression of COX-2 was observed only in the endothelial layer of the MCA samples from most ischemic MMD patients (6/8, 75%). The average A values of COX-2 in the hem...

ABSTRACT In our previous work, we proposed a general fourth order partial differential equation (... more ABSTRACT In our previous work, we proposed a general fourth order partial differential equation (PDE) for the generation of blending surfaces together with an accurate closed form solution for special boundary conditions where closed form solutions exist. In general, however, a closed form solution of a PDE is often either not existent or not obtainable depending on the boundary conditions and the coefficients of the PDE. In order to solve a wider range of surface blending problems using the new form of PDE, we propose in this paper a much more general resolution method using power series expansion. The main idea is to decompose the boundary conditions into a number of basic functions and separate them into two groups, one with and the other without closed form solutions. For the first group, the closed form solutions are produced with our previously proposed method. For the second group, a composite function is constructed which combines these basic functions with the power series of one parametric variable. The unknown constants of the composite function are determined by making use of both the boundary conditions and the weighted residual method, which minimizes the surface errors. Compared with existing resolution methods, the proposed method exhibits a number of advantages: 1) it is a general resolution method and hence able to solve a much wider class of surface blending problems; 2) the boundary conditions are always satisfied exactly that is crucial to the quality of blending surfaces; and 3) only a small number of collocation points and unknown constants are needed, making our method computationally efficient. Several examples given in the paper have demonstrated that this method is not only accurate, but fast enough for interactive applications.

In this paper, techniques of surface representation using PDEs of different orders are investigated. In order to investigate the real-time performance and capacity of surface generation based on the PDE method, the forms of three types of partial differential equations are put forward, which are the second,

We herein present our experience with treatments of two patients who suffered from anastomotic strictures caused by severe bile duct kinking after LDLT. The first patient was a 57-year-old woman with hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related liver cirrhosis, who developed a biliary stricture 5 months after receiving a right-lobe LDLT. Subsequently, endoscopic and percutaneous treatments were attempted, but they both failed to solve the problem. The second was a 44-year-old woman, and she also had HBV-related liver cirrhosis. A biliary stricture occurred 14 months after LDLT. Likewise, the guide wire failed to pass through the stricture site when endoscopic interventions were conducted. Afterwards, both of the two cases underwent reexploration. It was observed that compe...

We described and analyzed the clinical, radiological, operational and outcome data of 13 cases of huge intraventricular CNs, and discussed the treatment strategies in this study. All huge CNs (n=13) in our study were located in bilateral lateral ventricle with diameter ≥5.0 cm and had a broad-based attachment to at least one side of the ventricle wall. All patients received craniotomy to remove the tumor through transcallosal or transcortical approach and CNs were of typical histologic and immunohistochemical features. Adjuvant therapies including conventional radiation therapy (RT) or gamma knife radiosurgery (GKRS) were also performed postoperatively. Transcallosal and transcortical approaches were used in 8 and 5 patients, respectively. Two patients died within one month after operation and 3 patients with gross total resection (GTR) were additionally given a decompressive craniectomy (DC)...

Two gain fibers with opposite dispersion are employed to shorten the fiber laser cavity for high repetition rate and soliton-like pulse generation without losing gain and compactness. The spectral bandwidth of the output pulse is 24 nm and the direct pulse duration is 123 fs without extra-cavity compression, which are values near the transform-limited range.
