Trees play a very important role in mitigating this problem through sequestrating carbon dioxide which is one of major green house gases. The importance of trees is incontestable; they have many environmental, social and economic benefits, therefore, effective community participation can be an important strategy in ensuring adequate tree cover. In Kenya, environmental degradation occasioned by low tree cover is evident. The current tree cover in the study area is approximately 3% which is far below the recommended national level of 10%. It was important for a study to be carried out to establish the tree species (indigenous and exotic) available in the study area with a view to knowing the tree types that can be given priority when increasing tree cover. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the dominant tree species which can be used to increase groundcover...

With Kisumu as a case study, the purpose of this work was to explore the suitability of organic wastes from Kibuye market, hotels and livestock farms for compost manure making as a means of organic solid waste management. Methods: The study was cross-sectional in design. Compost manure was prepared from organic market waste, hotel food remains and livestock dung. Samples were then taken to a laboratory to test for the content of nitrogen, phosphorous (P 2 O 5) using TES/06/TM/21 and TES/06/TM/24 methods respectively and potassium (K 2 O) using Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) method as well as for heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb) while the Ph of the compost was tested by KS-158 method. Results: Laboratory tests for the presence of important crop elements were Nitrogen (0.4%), Phosphorous (0.4%), and Potassium (0.9%) whereas for heavy metals were Cd=Nil, Cu=10.1, Fe=1.08, Pb=Nil, and pH=8.4. Conclusion: It is safe to use organic waste from Kibuye as augmented by those from hotels and livestock farms for composting as a means of organic solid waste management if other supporting systems are in place.

Their growth is precipitated by the rapid urbanization and changing lifestyles in the country. In Kisumu County, this problem is encapsulated in Kachok dumpsite which is less than 2 km from the center of the central business district of Kisumu City. This work chronicles and discusses the history of Kachok dumpsite with the aim of highlighting its historical causation and policy implications to remedy future crises. Data was collected through in-depth interviews of key informants, observation, and reviews of the internet, and print media and analyzed through critical and content analysis. Findings indicate that the dumpsite's crisis was occasioned by the failure of management to look for alternative land in time, failure to plan the site for onsite waste handling and poor dumpsite and waste management. Policy recommendations on dumpsite site location, dumpsite and solid waste management, and monitoring and evaluation of landfills have been suggested to avert future crises.

Every society has its socio-cultural factors which members of the society conforms to. These factors are important because a member of the society needs to know them in order to participate in various activities. These socio-cultural factors can have influence either to men or women in a particular society. Some of the factors cannot be explained scientifically to members of the society but they honoured. The main objective of this study was to establish socio-cultural factors that influence women’s participation in tree growing. A cross sectional survey was used targeting 280 respondents who included 120household heads, 40 key informants, 4 women groups and Luo council of elders. The factors considered were tradition/customs, beliefs/norms, and activity profile with respect to tree growing. Data analysis used SPSS resulting in pie-chart, and table. The study concludes...

In some societies, women’s participation in tree growing can be hampered by traditions, beliefs, norms and taboos. The main objective of this study was determination of the socio-cultural factors that influence women’s participation in tree growing in Siaya County, Kenya. A cross sectional survey design was used with 120 household respondents, 40 key informants, 4 women groups and the Luo council of Elders. Instruments used were; structured questionnaire, interview schedule and interview guide. Data was analysed using both descriptive and coefficient of multiple correlations at 0.05 confidence level. 95% of title deeds are in the names of males, 1.8% of females (all of them were widows) and 3.2% had the names. R 2 is 4%, standardized beta coefficient of the same indicates -0.201 and p-value significance is 0.028. On traditions, 48.3% either disagreed or stron...
