Research paper thumbnail of Definitions for warning signs and signs of severe dengue according to the WHO 2009 classification: Systematic review of literature

We conducted an electronic search in Scopus to identify relevant articles, using key words including dengue, "warning signs," "severe dengue," and "classification." A total of 491 articles were identified through this search strategy and were subsequently screened by 2 independent reviewers for definitions of any of the warning or severe signs in the 2009 WHO dengue classification. We included all original articles published in English after 2009, classifying dengue by the 2009 WHO classification or providing the additional definition or criterion of warning signs and severity (besides the information of 2009 WHO). Analysis of the extracted data from 44 articles showed wide variations among definitions and cutoff values used by physicians to classify patients diagnosed with dengue infection. The...

They also need to receive iron chelation therapy to remove excess iron from their bodies, which imposes serious risk on their health and quality of life (QOL). Hence, this study was designed to assess the QOL of Egyptian B-TM children and adolescents in comparison with their healthy peers. Materials and methods A total of 127 B-TM patients and 65 healthy volunteers were enrolled and interviewed at the Ain Shams University Thalassemia Center. QOL assessment was made using the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) 4.0 Generic Core Scale. Results The controls had higher QOL scores in all domains at the start of the study (P<0.0001). Compliant patients had higher total QOL scores (P = 0.004). High pretransfusion hemoglobin levels and low serum ferritin levels were independent predictors of better QOL scores. Conclusion B-TM patients had a poor QOL; high hemoglobin level and low iron overload were associated with improved QOL scores. Egyptian J Haematol 39:-0 © 2014 The Egyptian Society of Haematology.

Objectives: Evaluation of diabetes mellitus and neuropathy effect on the urinary bladder dynamics in children and adolescents with Type 1 diabetes mellitus. Patients and Methods: The study included 80 children and adolescents with Type 1 diabetes for at least 5 years; 60 patients were with manifestations of autonomic and/or peripheral neuropathy and 20 patients were free of either. We assessed both groups for presence of cystopathy by means of uroflowmetry and cystometry. Results: All patients with diabetic neuropathy had abnormal urodynamic test results of variable types and degrees with bladder hypercompliance as the most frequent abnormality. Other urodynamic abnormalities were found in both diabetic patients' groups with no significant difference in frequency. Conclusions: Diabetic neuropathy might be strongly related to urodynamic abnormalities particularly the bladder hypercompliance. Some diabetic patients may have cystopathy in absence of evident neuropathy. This may be due to undetected neuropathy or diabetes induced myopathy of the detrusor muscle.

The Haemo-QoL instrument is a set of questionnaires to measure QoL in those children. The objectives of this study was to assess health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in Egyptian hemophilic children and adolescents using an Arabic version of the Haemo-QoL questionnaire. Sixty patients with severe hemophilia A were recruited from 2 hemophilia treating centers in Egypt. Assessment of quality of life was done using the Haemo-QoL questionnaire. The scores of HRQoL were found to be for all dimensions widely above 50. It was highly significant in the 3 dimensions (physical health-family-treatment) in different age groups, but it was impaired in the dimension of "physical health" for 2 groups, and in the dimension of "family" for the oldest group, whereas the youngest group had highly impaired scores concerning the "treatment. " The HRQoL in this study was not affected by the presence of factor VIII (FVIII) inhibitors. The QoL in hemophilic patients in Egypt needs strenuous efforts from hemophilia care-integrated teams of pediatric hematologists and psychiatrists in order to properly assess and improve QoL.
