Research paper thumbnail of Antisense-mediated depletion of a potato lipoxygenase reduces wound induction of proteinase inhibitors and increases weight gain of insect pests

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 1999

The first step in JA biosynthesis involves lipoxygenase (LOX) introducing molecular oxygen at the C-13 position of linolenic acid. We previously have shown that, in potato, at least two gene families code for 13-LOX proteins. We have now produced transgenic potato plants devoid of one specific 13-LOX isoform (LOX-H3) through antisense-mediated depletion of its mRNA. LOX-H3 depletion largely abolishes accumulation of proteinase inhibitors on wounding, indicating that this specific LOX plays an instrumental role in the regulation of wound-induced gene expression. As a consequence, weight gain of Colorado potato beetles fed on antisense plants is significantly larger than those fed on wild-type plants. The poorer performance of LOX-H3-deficient plants toward herbivory is more evident with a polyphagous insect; larvae of beet armyworm reare...

Research paper thumbnail of Jasmonic Acid-Dependent and -Independent Signaling Pathways Control Wound-Induced Gene Activation in Arabidopsis thaliana

Plant Physiology, 1997

Plant response to mechanical injury includes gene activation both at the wound site and systemica... more Plant response to mechanical injury includes gene activation both at the wound site and systemically in nondamaged tissues. The model developed for the wound-induced activation of the proteinase inhibitor II (Pin2) gene in potato (Solanum tuberosum) and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) establishes the involvement of the plant hormones abscisic acid and jasmonic acid (JA) as key components of the wound signal transduction pathway. To assess in Arabidopsis thaliana the role of these plant hormones in regulating wound-induced gene expression, we isolated wound- and JA-inducible genes by the differential mRNA display technique. Their patterns of expression upon mechanical wounding and hormonal treatments revealed differences in the spatial distribution of the transcripts and in the responsiveness of the analyzed genes to abscisic acid and JA. A correlation can be established between sensitivity to JA and the accumulation of the transcripts in systemic tissues upon wounding. A comparativ...

The analyzed sample included patients aged ≥18 years who were assessed on ≥10 occasions and received a diagnosis of BD at least once (n = 1153; 71 543 assessments). Prospective and retrospective consistencies and the proportion of subjects who received a BD diagnosis in ≥75% of assessments were calculated. Factors related to diagnostic shift were analyzed with traditional statistical methods and Markov's models. Results: Thirty per cent of patients received a BD diagnosis in the first assessment and 38% in the last assessment. Prospective and retrospective consistencies were 49% and 38%. Twenty‐three per cent of patients received a BD diagnosis during ≥75% of the assessments. Conclusion: There was a high p...

Psychiatric genetics, 2009

The products of the serotonin receptor genes are important targets for conventional and atypical ... more The products of the serotonin receptor genes are important targets for conventional and atypical antipsychotics, and may be relevant for antipsychotic activity and associated adverse reactions. It has been shown that the high potency at 5-HT2 receptors may also be associated with the production of moderate extrapyramidal side effects (EPS). In addition, serotonin neurotransmitter systems in the central nervous system play an important role in eating behaviours, and are involved in the symptomatology related to the metabolic syndrome, including obesity, diabetes and hyperlipidemia. This study was designed to investigate the hypothesis that serotonin pathway genes play a part in mediating antipsychotic-induced adverse reactions, including EPS, tardive dyskinesia, obesity and diabetes. Polymorphisms in the 5-HT2A (102 (T/C), His452Tyr), 5-HT2C (Cys23Ser, -759 (C/T), -995 (G/A), TPH2 (-366 (C/T), -8933 (A/G) and 5-HTT (LPR, -15370 (A/G)) genes were investigated in a cohort of 427 US Cau...

Method: A sample of 112 male suicide attempters was studied. Thirty-seven male blood donors were recruited as controls. Results: The mean testosterone levels were 5.1 ± 2.9 ng/ml in male attempters and 4.6 ± 1.6 ng/ml in controls. Group differences in testosterone levels were not significant when we studied the interaction with time of extraction (F = 0.37; d.f. = 2; p = 0.70) or when matched by age and time of extraction (t = –0.74; d.f. = 26; p = 0.47). When partial correlations were performed correcting for the effect of time of extraction, significant partial correlations were found in testosterone levels with history of aggressive behavior and lethality of the attempt. Conclusions: When circadian variation and...

The Ser9Gly polymorphism of the DRD3 was examined in 178 schizophrenic patients, 286 patients with other psychiatric diagnoses, and 132 controls recruited. Genotype frequencies were in Hardy‐Weinberg equilibrium. No association was found between schizophrenia and the Ser9Gly polymorphism of the D3 dopamine receptor gene. © 2006 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.
