Ghanaians now demand better products as they have difficulties with the fit of garment made by th... more Ghanaians now demand better products as they have difficulties with the fit of garment made by their informal dressmakers and tailors. The study aimed to determine the appropriate method for garment construction. The study focused on registered roadside dressmakers, tailors, fashion designers and fashion students in Ghana. A sample of 302 respondents was selected using multi-stage sampling technique. Questionnaire was used to gather information. The results showed that garment made with pattern fits better as compared to freehand cutting. It was concluded that garment constructed with both freehand cutting and patterns brings out the perfect fit of garment. It was recommended that Ghana National Tailors and Dressmakers Association should encourage and train their members on the use of patterns, and this would improve and manifest in the high standard on fit of garment.

The purpose of this study was to analyse the significance of hat in Ghanaian culture. The majority of Ghanaians are unaware of the history of the Ghanaian hat, and the fashion industry pays little attention to the indigenous hat, disregarding Ghanaian culture. The method adopted for the study was a mixed-method approach where both interviews and questionnaires were used for gathering information for the study. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. Embroidery, appliqué, tie dye/batik, prints, smocking and shirring display a rich variety of dynamic patterns and motifs in a garment. Fashion designers in Ghana appear not to take the fabric decorations into consideration when selecting and producing garments for their clients/customers. This results in the poor selection and placement of patterns and motifs in the production of garments for the various figure types. This study aimed at examining the effects of selected fabric decorations on the female figure types. The study adopted a qualitative research approach. Purposive sampling technique was used to select the twenty (20) fashion designers in Kumasi Metropolis. Structure interview was used in gather information from the fashion designers. The study discovered that that motifs and pattern decoration have effects on figure types. The effect of fabric decorations (embroidery, appliqué, tie and dye and printing, smocking and shirring) on the female figure types (Apple shape, Straight/rectangular shape, Pear shape and Hourglass shape.) helps end users to know the effects of fabric decorations on their figure type and more or less enables the designers to select and design clothes for a particular figure type in terms of choice of fabric decoration. It was recommended that fashion designers should take figure types into consideration when selecting and producing garments for their clients or end users.

The production of traditional Adinkra textile printing has been a dying art among the Artisans of the Ashanti region of Ghana. The Adinkra textile print has not gained appreciable acceptance among modern Ghanaian users, however, the meanings of the Adinkra symbols are still significant in the daily life activities of the Akan people of modern Ghana. To examine factors facilitating acceptance, an empirical study using mixed-methods was adopted. This paper discusses 'Adinkra' traditional symbols; meanings, uses in fabric designs and the next stage in fabrics production in textile industries in Ghana. Out of a large number of documented Adinkra symbols, Adinkrahene symbol was chosen for this research experiment because of its leadership role over other symbols. An expository research design was used to throw more light on design innovations and also to educate the public on contemporary fabrics. Some of the findings were that, less sophisticated tools and equipment were used in designing processes and the skills involved were not much strenuous.

The sample size of the study was 200 people. Questionnaire, interview and observation were used for data collection and content analysis done. Findings from the study indicate that some fashion designers did not see the benefits of using patterns; therefore, they did not use pattern layouts. However, the clothing designing students agreed that layouts helped in designing creative and professional garments. Although, their major constraint in the use of layouts is the increase number of hours used to produce patterns. The paper concludes with a call on stakeholders to give some training or workshops on knowledge of pattern layouts to both formally and informally trained fashion designers.

A total sample size of two hundred (200) respondents was used in the conduct of this study. Quota sampling technique was adopted in the selection of staff and management of the selected fashion businesses. A total of 215 questionnaires were administered to respondents and 200 were received from them. The results indicated that there are several challenges facing the marketing of fashion products in Ho. These are lack of capital and credit facilities, high income tax, high utility bills and rent, lack of market, low and irregular income, competition of cheap imported clothes, lack of knowledge and skills in the use of clothing production techniques. Adinkra, a collection of symbols with names and meanings that represents the culture of Akans has... more Adinkra, a collection of symbols with names and meanings that represents the culture of Akans has existed over a century; yet, Adinkra is limited in usage because they are mostly utilised as designs on funeral costumes. This article emphasises on positive attributes of selected Adinkra symbols to serve as a source of design for both traditional and modern fashion products for the propagation of gender equality. Adinkra symbols as designs for modern women fashion and clothing products has the effect of highlighting on the meanings of the symbols to signify the strength of women, offer flexibility in their choice of dress to affirm the needed changes for women empowerment. An original contribution of this paper is to show another way of affirming changes necessary to engender women empowerment for gender equality. Through the use of selected Adinkra symbols as designs for clothing, women empowerment can be achieved through positive affirmation.

The purpose of the study is to examine the challenges facing the Ghanaian textile industry with e... more The purpose of the study is to examine the challenges facing the Ghanaian textile industry with emphasis on the Adinkra textile cloth printing sub sector in Ghana, as well as opportunities for improving the industry. The sub sector is distinct and has different dynamics from other sub sectors of the broader textile industry. The study informs policy makers and private sector on the factors resulting in the decline of the Adinkra textile sub sector and the need to sustain the sub sector of the textiles industry due to its heritage importance and contribution to the economy. It also examines potential business opportunities for local and international firms to invest in the textile sub market for expansion and profitability. An empirical research design with mixed-methods approach was used in this study. A qualitative approach (semi-structured interviews) was used to collect the data, coded and analysed using standard NVivo software which generated quantitative outcomes for descriptive statistical analysis. Qualitative approach was also used to interpret the findings of the study. The results indicated that, factors such as lack of access to capital, outmoded forms of technology, issues with supply chain and nature of the dyes for printing the textile cloths are primarily responsible for the declining state of the sub sector. The implications of the challenges and the declining state of the sub sector are discussed and solutions proffered to solve the challenges.
