The majority of TV consumers now watch TV programs in a multi-display environment. Second screens... more The majority of TV consumers now watch TV programs in a multi-display environment. Second screens –most often smartphones - are generally used to check information not directly related to the events in the TV content being watched. Broadcasters have tried to orchestrate these different platforms, and there is reason to believe this contributes to user engagement. However, their success has been limited. This might be caused, at least in part, by the different formats of content being used: mobile apps show graphics and text similar to web content, while TV renders a continuous stream of audiovisual content. The arrival of virtual reality displays to the living room further increases the need for consistent experiences across displays. Así comienza Boccaccio el Decameron; confesando las cuitas de un alto y nobilísimo amor en el que desde su juventud se ha visto encendido y el consuelo recibido de los apacibles razonamientos de algunos amigos. En pago precisamente de esa deuda, ahora que ya se encuentra libre del mal, se propone escribir su libro para prestar algún alivio a quienes lo padecen; y de manera muy particular a las mujeres que, sujetas a los dictados de padres y maridos y a las normas sociales, tienen menos ocasión de evasión y divertimento. A ellas van destinados estos cuentos, con cuya lectura «parimente diletto delle sollazzevoli cose in quelle mostrate e utile consiglio potranno pigliare, in quanto potranno cognoscere quello che sia da fuggire e che sia similmente da seguitare» 1. De esta manera, destacando la función de utilidad que deben cumplir sus relatos, Boccaccio parece querer insertar, de manera explícita e inequívoca, su obra en la corriente didáctico-moralizante tradicional de la narrativa anterior: unión de lo ameno con lo instructivo, vinculación de la utilidad con el placer, ejemplificación de casos individuales, etc. Boccaccio aparece así, desde el horizonte de la historicidad de la poética de los géneros, como un continuador de una tradición que él modifica en la medida en que la inscribe en su propia historia (Jauss 1970: 79-98). El objetivo del libro es estudiar una serie de motivos paralelos en la tradición literaria coráni... more El objetivo del libro es estudiar una serie de motivos paralelos en la tradición literaria coránica y en una serie de apócrifos eslavos medievales. Estos paralelos pueden deberse a una elaboración de fuentes comunes que circulaban de manera libre y fluida por oriente y occidente en todo tipo de tradiciones orales o pueden deberse a influencias de una a otra dirección. El autor se muestra muy prudente a la hora de evaluar las influencias directas, que es el aspecto más difícilmente demostrable en el terreno de las influencias temáticas de época medieval, pero consigue demostrar una clara interinfluencia de fuentes en los aspectos concretos que estudia. Nano-oscillators based on phase-transition materials are being explored for the implementation of... more Nano-oscillators based on phase-transition materials are being explored for the implementation of different non-conventional computing paradigms. In particular, vanadium dioxide (VO2) devices are used to design autonomous non-linear oscillators from which oscillatory neural networks (ONNs) can be developed. In this work, we propose a new architecture for ONNs in which sub-harmonic injection locking (SHIL) is exploited to ensure that the phase information encoded in each neuron can only take two values. In this sense, the implementation of ONNs from neurons that inherently encode information with two-phase values has advantages in terms of robustness and tolerance to variability present in VO2 devices. Unlike conventional interconnection schemes, in which the sign of the weights is coded in the value of the resistances, in our proposal the negative (positive) weights are coded using static inverting (non-inverting) logic at the output of the oscillator. The collective behavior of many coupled oscillator systems is currently being explored for the im... more The collective behavior of many coupled oscillator systems is currently being explored for the implementation of different non-conventional computing paradigms. In particular, VO 2 based nano-oscillators have been proposed to implement oscillatory neural networks that can serve as associative memories, useful in pattern recognition applications. Although the dynamics of a pair of coupled oscillators have already been extensively analyzed, in this brief, the topic is addressed more practically. Firstly, for the application mentioned above, each oscillator needs to be initialized in a given phase to represent the input pattern. We demonstrate the impact of this initialization mechanism on the final phase relationship of the oscillators. Secondly, such oscillatory networks are based on frequency synchronization, in which the impact of variability is critical. We carried out a comprehensive mathematical analysis of a pair of coupled oscillators taking into account both issues, which is a first step towards the design of the oscillatory neural networks for associative memory applications.

The design of near future cryptocircuits will require greater performance characteristics in orde... more The design of near future cryptocircuits will require greater performance characteristics in order to be implemented in devices with very limited resources for secure applications. Considering the security against differential power side-channel attacks (DPA), explorations of different implementations of dual-precharge logic gates with advanced and emerging technologies, using nanometric FinFET and Tunnel FET transistors, are proposed aiming to maintain or even improve the security levels obtained by current MOSFET technologies and reducing the resources needed for the implementations. As case study, dual-precharge logic primitives have been designed and included in the 4-bit substitution box of PRIDE algorithm, measuring the performance and evaluating the security through simulation-based DPA attacks for each implementation. Extensive electrical simulations with predictive PTM model on scaled 16nm and 22nm MOSFET, 16nm and 20nm FinFET and 20nm TFET, demonstrate a clear evolution of security and performances with respect to current 90nm MOSFET implementations, providing FinFET as fastest solutions with a delay 3.7 times better than conventional proposals, but being TFET the best candidate for future cryptocircuits in terms of average power consumption (x0.02 times compared with conventional technologies) and security in some orders of magnitude. Finding a balance between wildlife conservation and land use protection when conflicts arise requ... more Finding a balance between wildlife conservation and land use protection when conflicts arise requires applying measures based on scientific knowledge and applicability. This is because of the complexity of interactions and the social dimensions of humanwildlife relationships. One of the conflicts in the Mediterranean basin is between European bee-eaters Merops apiaster and beekeeping. The objective of this study was to evaluate the activity of bee-eaters in relation to honey bees Apis mellifera in Extremadura (W Spain), and the possible correlation with traits and viability of beehives. We also aimed to assess the effectiveness of damage prevention measures, to be able to predict whether they could assist in the future sustainability of apicultural management. A monitoring program was conducted in 58 apiaries to observe bee and bee-eater activity and abundance. Additionally, we measured the effect of environmental variables and the amount of resources in the hives, by means of honey, pollen, and brood. We found that bee-eater negatively correlated to honey bee activity and the more abundant it was the fewer resources (honey, pollen, and brood) and lower abundance of bees in the hives, mainly during their migratory season (August). However, there were no negative effects on the survival and viability of the hives. The preventive and deterrent measures offered promising results, especially the installation of shading meshes around the apiary that prevented the predation of bees in the immediate surroundings of the beehives. Further studies on the effectiveness of preventive techniques and their practical implementation through different mechanisms of economic compensation must be enhanced to reduce this social conflict.

Many emerging devices are currently being explored as potential alternatives to complementary met... more Many emerging devices are currently being explored as potential alternatives to complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor technologies for overcoming power density and energy efficiency limitations. It is now generally accepted that these emerging devices need to be evaluated at the circuit level. In this paper, we investigate the speed and power performance of hyper-field-effect transistor (Hyper-FET) circuits, comparing them with both high-performance and low standby power fin-shaped FET designs on the same technology node. The evaluation, which was carried out at the gate level and circuit level, includes a characterization of 8-bit ripple carry adders. Our experiments showed around 80% speed degradation and 30% power savings for a given range of operating frequencies. These power savings were much smaller than those predicted from the transistor-and gate-level estimations. Deviations from the ideal expected behavior of the Hyper-FET circuitry are illustrated, which support the obtained results. They have shown higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) at low input power than Si FinFETs counterparts. In this paper, we analyze the limitations of typical tunnel field-effect transistor rectifier topologies associated with the forward biasing of their intrinsic diode and show that this can occur at relatively weak input signals depending on the specific characteristic of the used tunnel device. We propose a simple modification in the implementation of the rectifiers to overcome this problem. The impact of our proposal is evaluated on the widely used gate cross-coupled topology. The proposed designs exhibit similar peak PCE and sensitivity but significantly improve PCE for larger input signal amplitude and larger input power.

In this paper, we analyze the relationship between devices and register transfer–level architecture choices. We claim that architectural issues should be considered when evaluating this type of transistors because of the differences in delay versus supply voltage behavior exhibited by TFET logic gates with respect to CMOS gates. More specifically, the potential of pipelining and parallelism, both of which rely on lowering supply voltage, as power reduction techniques is evaluated and compared for CMOS and TFET technologies. They have shown higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) at low input power than Si FinFETs counterparts. In this paper, we analyze the limitations of typical tunnel field-effect transistor rectifier topologies associated with the forward biasing of their intrinsic diode and show that this can occur at relatively weak input signals depending on the specific characteristic of the used tunnel device. We propose a simple modification in the implementation of the rectifiers to overcome this problem. The impact of our proposal is evaluated on the widely used gate cross-coupled topology. The proposed designs exhibit similar peak PCE and sensitivity but significantly improve PCE for larger input signal amplitude and larger input power.

In this paper, we analyze the relationship between devices and register transfer–level architecture choices. We claim that architectural issues should be considered when evaluating this type of transistors because of the differences in delay versus supply voltage behavior exhibited by TFET logic gates with respect to CMOS gates. More specifically, the potential of pipelining and parallelism, both of which rely on lowering supply voltage, as power reduction techniques is evaluated and compared for CMOS and TFET technologies.
