lostridium difficile infection (CDI), a common cause of infectious diarrhea, has become increasin... more lostridium difficile infection (CDI), a common cause of infectious diarrhea, has become increasingly prevalent in the acute care setting. 1 CDI is associated with increased morbidity and more recently with increased mortality, 2,3 and it has surpassed methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) as the leading cause of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs). 2,4 CDI also increases hospital length of stay (LOS) and care costs. A well-known cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea, it is estimated to account for 15% to 25% of all diarrheal episodes. 2 No longer only associated with health care facilities, C. difficile infections are now an emerging threat in the community.
