Objective: To study the sensorineural hearing loss (receptive hearing loss) associated with chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM). Methods: 96 patients were clinically diagnosed with chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) consulting us in Diwaniyah teaching hospital & my private clinic between September 2006 & April 2009. 66 cases of the total number were unilateral while the bilateral cases were 30. Audiological assessments were done for all cases. Results: The results showed a significant relationship between CSOM & SNHL mainly at high frequencies, & it had been found that the longer duration at time of diagnosis the more percentage affected & cases of CSOM associated with cholesteatomas were more affected by SNHL & the frequency 8000Hz was the most affected one. Conclusions: The presence ...

The diagnosis of rhinovirus infection by clinical and convenient means is more complicated because of the lack of sensitive, accurate tools for differentiation of the rhinovirus from other respiratory tract viral infections. Here, we had developed a rapid, specific and sensitive one step Reverse Transcription Real-Time PCR molecular method for the detection of human rhinovirus (HRV) from nasopharyngeal secretion specimens. The Primers designed from the highly conserved polyprotein gene of human rhinovirus. Our results that had shown a positive RT-PCR assay were specific in detection of HRV and observed in 41 out of 50 specimens (82%). We conclude that one-step RT-PCR assay was a highly specific and rapid technique for the detection of HRV RNA in nasophary...

The results showed a total of eight fungal species belong to six different genera, namely, Aspergillus, Candida, Penicillium, Rhizopus, Alternaria, and Cephalosporium were isolated during this study. Among identified fungi, Aspergillus niger was found to be the most prevalent fungal species with 35.71% followed by Candida albicans (27.55%), Aspergillus flavus (10.20%), Aspergillus fumigatus (8.16), Penicillium digitatum (6.12%) and Cephalosporium species (4.08%), and R...

The patients from 61-70 and 71-80 years were more susceptible to fungal otitis externa than other age groups .the most common causal fungal isolates were Aspergillus niger (26.92%) followed by Candia albicans (19.24%) ,A.flavus (15.38%),A.fumigatus (11.53%),Penicillum digitatum and Cephalosporium sp (7.69%) for each one while Alternaria alternata and Rhizopus sp (5.7%) for each one .
