What remains less clear is how they are engaging with women’s rights organizations and the ways in which these coalitions are built. Through open-ended interviews with active male gender activists, I will explore their relationship with feminism- how they define it personally, and at an organizational level how men’s groups are collaborating and building solidarity with women’s rights organizations. In doing so, I will identify the multi-faceted ways in which men’s organizations are engaging [both formally and informally] with feminist thought, women’s rights organizations, and with individual women feminists. Through interviewing, I hope to identify solutions to resistance in working more effectively, and ways in which transformative, authentic and long-term partnerships can be fostered. Feminist theory will be the basis for my research process and will guide my analys...

Their experiences are explored in the context of the emergence of antifeminist groups, and an increasingly volatile funding environment whereby women’s rights organizations are seeing their financial resources threatened. Using a critical and sociological approach to masculinities, significant challenges at the personal level for these pro-feminist men are examined and are shown to compound engagement with women feminists, and the potential of cross gender partnerships. A people-oriented qualitative approach is employed to capture men’s personal journeys and how they selfidentify with the feminist movement. This research adds to the prevalent “Man Question”, contesting men’s engagement in the feminist movement. Ultimately, however, the thesis concludes that men’s engagement in the feminist movement needs to be clearly positioned as a political project with an explici...

Boys and men are both capable, and interested, to take action to support the feminist movement. This article explores the experiences of five men active in pro-feminist organising, focusing in particular on their ways of building solidarity and alliances with women’s rights networks. The current context of men’s pro-feminist organising and the ways in which alliances are being forged with women’s rights networks will be explored, demonstrating a diversity of approaches. The challenges are many, particularly as women’s rights networks find themselves in a hostile funding climate, and ‘men’s rights’ groups continue to delegitimise women’s rights and deny the existence of gender inequality. Despite these challenges, pro-feminist men’s organisations are employing strategies to enhance relationships with women’s rights networks, and ensure their efforts retain feminist at the core. The importance of self-reflexivity and listening for pro-feminist men to operate in feminist spaces will be stressed, as well as to build broader coalitions and create additional resources for gender equality work.
