Our work was based on a characterization of the physicochemical, bacteriological quality of the surface water using two water quality indices (WGQI and CCME-WQI), at 20 sites during spring and summer 2017. After the detection of the most polluted zones, a second study focused on the characterization of the concentrations of twenty-one heavy metals determined from the highest polluted sites (9 stations) during autumn 2018. The results obtained reflect a deficient ecological state, especially downstream.

Northwest African material previously ascribed to the subspecies Nephrotoma guestfalica surcoufi ... more Northwest African material previously ascribed to the subspecies Nephrotoma guestfalica surcoufi (Pierre, 1925) proved to belong to two distinct morphological forms, the true N. g. surcoufi from Algeria, and Tunisia, and the here newly introduced Nephrotoma guestfalica vaillanti n. subsp. from Morocco. With the distinction of the new form, four subspecies of Nephrotoma guestfalica (Westhoff, 1879) are now recognized, all occurring in the western Palaearctic. An identification key for the males of the four taxa of Nephrotoma guestfalica s.l. is provided. The male terminalia of the four taxa are illustrated. The distribution of the four subspecies is summarized, based on material examined and published data. A map showing the currently known distribution of N. guestfalica surcoufi and N. guestfalica vaillanti is presented. Nephrotoma guestfalica guestfalica is recorded here for the first time from Croatia.

The four ecological zones are: Zone 1 (Estuarine zone including pools, ponds, lagoons and wet meadows, altitude 0-10 m); Zone 2 (Potamal, alt. 10-350 m); Zone 3 (Lower basin of streams and wadis (alt. 350-1000 m); Zone 4 (Upper basin of streams, wadis, springs and peat bogs, alt. >1000 m). An updated list of 256 species/taxa belonging to Chironomidae (Diptera) has been established which complements previous data for the chironomid fauna of Morocco. The list includes 72 (28%) new records for the fauna of Morocco, 21 (8%) undescribed species and probably 2 new genera (1 Orthocladiinae and 1 Tanytarsini). Spatial distribution of species by subfamilies is highlighted in the four ecological zones where faunal comparative results are: Bucho...

The species group is differentiated from other Hercostomus by the male mid femur bearing ventral tubercle at base, one subtriangular and one semirounded projections at middle of narrow cercus directed ventrally, peculiar hitching lock between hind tibia and basitarsus. Syntypes of H. exarticulatoides Stackelberg, 1949 are studied. Lectotype is designated for the latter species. Hercostomus tanjusilus Negrobov et Tsurikov, 1988, syn. n. is proposed as a junior synonym of H. exarticulatus (Loew, 1857). Photographs of H. exarticulatoides, H. exarticulatus and H. canariensis Santos Abreu, 1929 are published for the first time. A key for the species group is provided.
