Research paper thumbnail of An Analysis of the Accounting and Financial Effects of Inconsistent State and Federal Laws on Growth of the Recreational Marijuana Industry

Journal of Legal, Ethical and Regulatory Issues, 2016

INTRODUCTIONThe recreational marijuana industry exists in an environment of legislative uncertain... more INTRODUCTIONThe recreational marijuana industry exists in an environment of legislative uncertainty resulting from states legalizing recreational marijuana while it is still considered illegal at the federal level. For the recreational marijuana industry, legalization did not occur until 2012 when Colorado first legalized it and has since been followed by three other states and Washington D.C. The dichotomy between state and federal laws has created interesting accounting and financial effects; including how financial institutions, CPAs, and the individual marijuana businesses themselves are affected by the inconsistencies in the laws from an accounting and finance perspective. From a financial institution standpoint, one of the most important aspects that is influenced by the differing state and federal laws includes providing services to marijuana-related businesses while still adhering to federal banking regulations. Banks are subject to a number of federal regulations that they m...

At least eight people have lost their lives. The Kilauea volcano continues to erupt in Hawaii, having destroyed 600 homes. The 2018 hurricane season is in full swing, and while there have been no catastrophic events to date, residents in Houston, Florida, Puerto Rico, and elsewhere are still recovering from the devastating winds and rains wrought by Har- vey, Maria, and Irma last year. Those hurricanes are estimated to have caused more than $200 billion in damages, making the 2017 hurricane season the costliest in U.S. history. Around the world, natural disasters such as deadly heat waves, flooding, mudslides, hurricanes, and tornadoes will cause untold losses as temperatures across the globe are rising. After the smoke clears,...

Health Marketing Quarterly

Abstract Breast cancer related promotions, advertising, and pink ribbons are now ubiquitous in Oc... more Abstract Breast cancer related promotions, advertising, and pink ribbons are now ubiquitous in October, yet comparatively little is known about how this advertising impacts breast cancer survivors specifically. The present research uses an embodied knowledge perspective to explore the impact of cancer advertising on female breast cancer survivors. Five focus groups were conducted with 42 participants, and the discussions were analyzed to find common themes. The survivors expressed a desire for cancer advertising to be representative, informative (particularly regarding detection and treatment options), hopeful, and transparent about the organization’s motivation and support. Implications and recommendations are also discussed.

Human amnion epithelial cells (hAECs) are nonimmunogenic, nontumorigenic, anti-inflammatory cells... more Human amnion epithelial cells (hAECs) are nonimmunogenic, nontumorigenic, anti-inflammatory cells normally discarded with placental tissue. We reasoned that their profile of biological features, wide availability, and the lack of ethical barriers to their use could make these cells useful as a therapy in ischemic stroke. We tested the efficacy of acute (1.5 hours) or delayed (1-3 days) poststroke intravenous injection of hAECs in 4 established animal models of cerebral ischemia. Animals included young (7-14 weeks) and aged mice (20-22 months) of both sexes, as well as adult marmosets of either sex. We found that hAECs administered 1.5 hours after stroke in mice migrated to the ischemic brain via a CXC chemokine receptor type 4-dependent mechanism and reduced brain inflammation, infarct development, and functional deficits. Furthermore, if hAECs administration was delayed until 1 or 3 days poststroke, long-term functional recovery was still augmented in young and aged mice of both se...

Annals of Pharmacotherapy

Being an oil-based medication, it may be adsorbed to the inner lumen of the CVL and result in falsely high levels drawn from an inadvertently exposed lumen. There is no treatment for decontamination of such CVLs, and natural decay occurs over months before the CVL can be used to draw reliable trough levels. Objective: The primary objective of the study was to estimate the effectiveness of 70% ethanol locks for decontaminating CVLs exposed to tacrolimus. Methods: We studied the efficacy of 70% ethanol lock in decontaminating CVLs exposed to tacrolimus in patients during transplant. Trough tacrolimus levels were drawn from the exposed and unexposed (control) lumens at 8:00 am, followed by a 2-mL 70% ethanol lock instilled for a 2-hour dwell into the exposed (intervention) lumen. Research paper thumbnail of Optimizing non-invasive radiofrequency hyperthermia treatment for improving drug delivery in 4T1 mouse breast cancer model

RF delivers thermal energy into tissues, which increases intra-tumoral drug perfusion and blood-flow. Herein, we describe an optical-based method to optimize the short-term treatment schedules of drug and hyperthermia administration in a 4T1 breast cancer model via RF, with the aim of maximizing drug localization and homogenous distribution within the tumor microenvironment. This method, based on the analysis of fluorescent dyes localized into the tumor, is more time, cost and resource efficient, when compared to current analytical methods for tumor-targeting drug analysis such as HPLC and LC-MS. Alexa-Albumin 647 nm fluorphore was chosen as a surrogate for nab-paclitaxel based on its similar molecular weight and albumin driven pharmacokinetics. We found that RF hyperthermia induced a 30-40% increase in Alexa...

The Sjögren's International Collaborative Clinical Alliance (SICCA) is an international multisite observational study whose participants have been genotyped on the Omni 2.5M platform and undergone deep phenotyping using common protocol-directed methods, providing a unique opportunity to examine the genetic etiology of SS across ancestry and disease subsets. We perform GWAS analyses utilizing dbGaP controls on all subjects (1405 cases, 1622 SICCA controls, 3125 external controls), European (similarly 585, 966, 2580), and Asian (similarly 460, 224, 901) with ancestry adjustments via principal component analyses. We also investigate whether subphenotype distributions differ by ethnicity and if this contributes to heterogeneity of genetic associations. All subjects were assessed at Days 0, 7, 14, 28, and 84. Subjects in the 50:50 μg bivalent cohort received a second injection on Day 84 and were assessed on Days 98 and 112. Incidence and severity of reactogenicity and adverse events (AEs) were compared. Geometric mean serum concentrations (GMC) and neutralizing activity of anti-rAT and anti-rLukS-PV IgG were assessed. Reactogenicity incidence was significantly higher in vaccine than placebo recipients (77% versus 55%, respect...

Despite the widespread use, few studies objectively evaluate health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in patients undergoing laparoscopic adrenalectomy (LA). We assessed patients' health status and recovery after LA with the use of validated questionnaires. Patients seen in urology clinic for evaluation of adrenal surgery were enlisted in our prospective, patient-reported, HRQOL study assessing postoperative recovery. HRQOL was measured using Convalescence And Recovery Evaluation (CARE) and Short Form-12 questionnaires administered before surgery and at 2, 4, 8, 12 weeks and annually after surgery. A total of 30 patients who met study inclusion criteria from July 2009 to November 2014 were included in our evaluation. Mean patient age was 53 years. Tumor size rang...
