This study aimed to evaluate drug use patterns and to identify and analyze the problems in drug prescribing in the outpatient department (OPD) of Chitwan Medical College Teaching Hospital (CMCTH), Bharatpur, Nepal by employing the World Health Organization/ International Network of Rational Use of Drugs (WHO/INRUD) core drug use indicators (prescribing indicators). Methods: A cross sectional retrospective study design was employed. A total of 612 prescriptions written from June 1, 2018 to July 31, 2018 were investigated. A validated index system based on the mathematical model developed by Zhang and Zhi and WHO prescribed indicator tool was used. Differences in PRESCRIBING indicators in terms of gender were tested using an independent t-test and differences between different age categories were tested using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results: The average number of drugs per prescription was 3.46±S.D 1.451, the drugs prescribed with generic name were 10.72%, the encounter with an antibiotic prescribed was 31.37%, 0.81% of injections were prescribed and 27.31 % of drugs were prescribed from Essential Drug List (EDL). The index of rational drug prescribing was calculated for each department and applied to rank the departments from first to last. The overall index of rational drug prescribed for CMCTH was obtained to be 2.91 (optimal: 5). Conclusion: Irrational use of drugs was observed in all departments. Polypharmacy, brand prescribing, overprescribing of antibiotics, and prescribing out of the essential drug list were the major issues that need the attention of healthcare authorities.
