The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of Google Classroom, which was used ... more The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of Google Classroom, which was used to teach students how to write descriptive text for Junior High School. A quasi-experimental research design used in this study. The participants in this study were students in the eighth grade at SMPN 13 in Palembang. Purposive sampling used to select 60 students for this study. The researchers used a pre-test and post-test method to collect data. The researchers used SPSS to analyze the data and test the hypothesis. When the value of significance (2-tailed) in this study was lower than the significance level (0.000 < 0.05), the Ha was accepted. It means that using Google Classroom had a significant impact on students' achievement in writing descriptive text. This study was aimed to found out: whether or not there were an influence of interaction among picture series, motivation and gender toward speaking achievement. Method of this research used quantitative with factorial 2x2x2 design approach. There were 60 students as sample, 30 students for experimental group and 30 students for control group. TOEFL training for the seventh semester students of English education study program FKIP, Muhamma... more TOEFL training for the seventh semester students of English education study program FKIP, Muhammadiyah University Of Palembang. Overall "Alhamdulillah" went smoothly. All participant enthusiastically participated in the training for approximately 4 hours until it was finished. In other word, TOEFL training for seventh semester student of the English education study program FKIP, University of Muhammadiyah Palembang was Proven successful by the expressions of the participant who felt happy and were able to solve all TOEFL question given, were previously they did not know that TOEFL and in the end they understand the strategies in doing the TOEFL questions quickly and precisely, effectively end efficiently. In short, there are so many benefits that can be obtained for participant during the TOEFL training. Participant can improve their basic English Skills which are needed when taking the real TOEFL test.

Thesis is one of the compulsory subjects that all final semester students must take to complete t... more Thesis is one of the compulsory subjects that all final semester students must take to complete their undergraduate studies. In fact, they still do not understand how to write a good and correct thesis proposal, even though they already have a Writing guided book. The method of implementing this service is through lectures and discussions. The results of the training show that the qualifications of the seventh semester students of English Education in writing mini research proposals using both quantitative and qualitative approaches are good. This is evidenced by their increasing ability in determining titles and formulating competitive research problems. They were also able to paraphrase the theoretical basis they use in their research proposals and are also able to provide an additional (additional voice) conclusion to the theory that they used to avoid plagiarism. Furthermore, it can be seen from their ability to present mini research while in the breakout room of the Zoom application and based on the observations of the presenter lecturers, overall, all participants were able to present the mini research proposals that they had previously prepared.

For this reason, it is highly suggested that in reading teachers direct students to be diligent in reading and interpreting what they read. The teacher must motivate students and needs to assist them during reading lessons through the best guidance. Torihoran and Rachmat (2002), reading is becoming more and more important in the new knowledge economy and remains the most effective human activity for transforming information into knowledge (p.56). Because reading is one of the important skills in language learning. Comprehension is how the students understand and get the messages from the text. Students can read many English texts but they cannot comprehend the message of the text. According to Wolley (2011) "Reading comprehension is the process of making meaning from text. There are two kinds of vocabulary learning strategies which are breadth vocabulary (recognition) and depth vocabulary (recall). In enhancing L2 vocabulary knowledge students need the awareness of learning strategies used. The active students use learning strategies can increase language skills, self confidence and learning motivation in learning activity process. Learning strategies instruct students to learn independently, responsibly, and actively. Thus, students tend to be more confident and motivated when applied learning strategies in the daily learning process. Besides, teacher ought to teach and motivate students to apply students’ some learning strategies accordingly. Finally after implementing learning strategies, students and teachers need to evaluate the progress students’ vocabulary regularly.

Based on the data analysis, there were five major findings: First, linguistic, logical, spatial, musical, and interpersonal intelligences were types of intelligence of the sixth graders. Second, most of the students dominantly have interpersonal intelligence. Third, based on the calculation of z scores (standard scores), Logical-Ma thematical intelligence was the type of intelligence that had better English achievement because this type had the positive scores higher than the negative scores. Fourth, the variance of population was homogeneous. Fifth, the mean value of population was homogeneous and correlated each other.

The phenomenon of culture shock has some impacts on foreigners (i.e. psychological impact and in... more The phenomenon of culture shock has some impacts on foreigners (i.e. psychological impact and intellectual impact), especially for foreign students studying in a new country. This research is aimed at figuring out the dominant aspects of culture shocks faced by the three Thai students studying at Universitas Muhammadiyah Palembang and how they cope with it. Descriptive-qualitative method was used in this research.To collect the data, the researchers used interview and questionnaire. Coding technique was used in analyzing the data. The results showed two dominant aspects of culture shocks found, namely: academic shocks (i.e teacher’s role and attitude, poorly organized program and classroom organization, and local students’ attitude). and social shocks (i.e.women-men relationship, community bonding, habits in social gathering). Generally, the three Thai students coped with the shock by preparing mental and psychology, as well as learning academic destination.

The objective of the study was to find out whether or not it is effective to improve reading comp... more The objective of the study was to find out whether or not it is effective to improve reading comprehension achievement on descriptive text by using scrapbook to eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 13 Palembang. The population was 320 students. The sample was 78 by purposive sampling in two classes. First class was VIII.4 contain 39 students as the control group and the second class as the experimental class was class VIII.8 contain 39 students. The quasi experimental method was used. The data were obtained from the written test in 20 multiple choice questions and 10 in fill in the blank form. SPSS version 16.0 was used to analyze the data and independent sample test was applied. Based on the analysis of the data, it was (1) the mean of experimental group in the post-test was 90 and in the control group was 75 and (2) the result of independent sample test formula was 11.095, this score is higher than the critical value 1.9879. It could be concluded that it is effective using scrapbook in learning reading comprehension of descriptive text to the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 13 Palembang in the academic year of 2015/2016.

Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di SD N Gedongkiwo pada bulan Juni 2015 yang melibatkan dua jenis variabel yaitu variabel bebas dan variabel terikat. Variabel bebas adalah penggunaan aplikasi jejaring sosial, sedangkan variabel terikat adalah kecerdasan sosial. There are two kinds of vocabulary learning strategies which are breadth vocabulary (recognition) and depth vocabulary (recall). In enhancing L2 vocabulary knowledge students need the awareness of learning strategies used. The active students use learning strategies can increase language skills, self confidence and learning motivation in learning activity process. Learning strategies instruct students to learn independently, responsibly, and actively. Thus, students tend to be more confident and motivated when applied learning strategies in the daily learning process. Besides, teacher ought to teach and motivate students to apply students’ some learning strategies accordingly. Finally after implementing learning strategies, students and teachers need to evaluate the progress students’ vocabulary regularly.

Based on the data analysis, there were five major findings: First, linguistic, logical, spatial, musical, and interpersonal intelligences were types of intelligence of the sixth graders. Second, most of the students dominantly have interpersonal intelligence. Third, based on the calculation of z scores (standard scores), Logical-Ma thematical intelligence was the type of intelligence that had better English achievement because this type had the positive scores higher than the negative scores. Fourth, the variance of population was homogeneous. Fifth, the mean value of population was homogeneous and correlated each other.

The phenomenon of culture shock has some impacts on foreigners (i.e. psychological impact and in... more The phenomenon of culture shock has some impacts on foreigners (i.e. psychological impact and intellectual impact), especially for foreign students studying in a new country. This research is aimed at figuring out the dominant aspects of culture shocks faced by the three Thai students studying at Universitas Muhammadiyah Palembang and how they cope with it. Descriptive-qualitative method was used in this research.To collect the data, the researchers used interview and questionnaire. Coding technique was used in analyzing the data. The results showed two dominant aspects of culture shocks found, namely: academic shocks (i.e teacher’s role and attitude, poorly organized program and classroom organization, and local students’ attitude). and social shocks (i.e.women-men relationship, community bonding, habits in social gathering). Generally, the three Thai students coped with the shock by preparing mental and psychology, as well as learning academic destination.

After investigating the data, the writer found out four types of English prefix; quantified, locative, temporal, and negation prefixes. The objective of the study was to find out whether or not it is effective to improve reading comp... more The objective of the study was to find out whether or not it is effective to improve reading comprehension achievement on descriptive text by using scrapbook to eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 13 Palembang. The population was 320 students. The sample was 78 by purposive sampling in two classes. First class was VIII.4 contain 39 students as the control group and the second class as the experimental class was class VIII.8 contain 39 students. The quasi experimental method was used. The data were obtained from the written test in 20 multiple choice questions and 10 in fill in the blank form. SPSS version 16.0 was used to analyze the data and independent sample test was applied. Based on the analysis of the data, it was (1) the mean of experimental group in the post-test was 90 and in the control group was 75 and (2) the result of independent sample test formula was 11.095, this score is higher than the critical value 1.9879. It could be concluded that it is effective using scrapbook in learning reading comprehension of descriptive text to the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 13 Palembang in the academic year of 2015/2016.
