Research paper thumbnail of Outward foreign direct investment and the economic growth of Central, East and Southeast Europe: an asymmetric approach

However, for the CESEE countries, as well as for the majority of countries around the world, there has been no study that has estimated the symmetric and asymmetric effect of outward FDI on economic growth. The main objective of this study is to estimate whether the relation between outward FDI and economic growth in CESEE countries is symmetric or asymmetric.Design/methodology/approachThis study includes a sample based on eight CESEE countries. The authors used the linear and non-linear autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model and annual data for the period from 1990 to 2020.FindingsIn the long run, in the linear ARDL model, a significant symmetrical effect due to OFDI on the economic growth of Romania and Slovenia was found, while in the non-linear ARDL model, a significant asymmetric effect of OFDI on the economic growth of Bulgaria, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovenia and Slovakia was found. In six out of the eight countries, asymmetry was found while symmetry was found in the other two. Poorer symmetry results can be ascribed to the lack of linear model neglecting the asymmetric behaviour of the positive and negative change decomposition as part of the OFDI movement, which leads to the wrong conclusion.Originality/valueThis is the first study to evaluate the asymmetric effect of outward FDI on the economic growth of eight CESEE countries.

Bivariate and multivariate Granger causality frameworks have been used in this study. The results suggest that the conclusion of bivariate framework may not be valid because it allows omission of important variables. The results of the multivariate framework show that there is a long-run positive unidirectional causality from outward FDI to gross domestic product (GDP) per capita. In the short-run, both per capita income and outward FDI do not allow Granger causality.

It utilizes panel data (PD) time-series in the interval from 2007 to 2013. It applies economical gravity model and econometric dynamic PD techniques: PD models, fixed effects models and random effects models (RE). It has been concluded that trade liberalization positively impacts the reduction in trade balance deficit of CEFTA 2006 countries, i.e. that export and import between the exporting country i and the importing country j within time period t, gross domestic product (GDP) of the country j, GDP per capita of the country j within time period t, distance between the country i and country j, dummy variables (free trade agreements and sharing a common border) are statistically significant. Na međunarodnom tržistu prisutan je sve veci broj privrednih subjekata, odnosno organizacija koje se odlikuju određenim specificnostima i posebnostima, koje su proizvod nacionalne kulture. Uspesno poslovanje globalnih organizacija zahteva poznavanje nacionalnih, odnosno organizacionih kultura. Globalne organizacije, moraju na svom putu internacionalizacije posvetiti narocitu pažnju organizacionoj kulturi kao najvažnijoj instanci. U suprotnom ako se zanemare kulturne vrednosti i norme pojedinih nacionalnih kultura, uspesnost poslovanja i dobri rezultati ce izostati. Globalne organizacije danas u svetu imaju veoma razvijenu mrežu svojih filijala, i preko kojih dolaze u kontakt sa raznim nacionalnim kulturama.

With privatization processes, governments generally seek to achieve the same goals: 1) increase government revenues, 2) reduce government interference in economic trends, 3) strengthen economic efficiency, 4) increase competition, and 5) ensure the development of domestic capital markets. Numerous studies have confirmed that after privatization has been carried out, increased production, improved efficiency, increased investment in capital and dividend payments are recorded. The roots of corporate governance in developing countries and transition economies lie in the initiatives for privatization that have strengthened since the end of the seventies and eighties of the twentieth century. In order to investigate the potential effect, this paper applied the gravity equation and the GMM model system dynamic data estimation. The research is based on aggregate and non‑aggregate approach. Within the aggregate approach for the three countries of the Western Balkans, the reduction of import simple average tariff rate (SAT) and weighted average tariff (WAT) rate have a positive effect on the growth of total and individual exports of products. Within the non‑aggregate approach for each country individually, the reduction in imports of SAT and WAT rates also have a positive effect on the growth of total and individual exports of products from Albania and Serbia, while this effect is weak for FYR Macedonia.

However, empirical research on the impact of globalization on companies, especially in transition countries, is very scarce. This paper focuses on the study of the impact of globalization on the performance of companies in Bosnia and Herzegovina by analyzing their interrelationships. The findings, in the case of companies in Bosnia and Herzegovina, have confirmed earlier findings about the double impact of globalization by showing, on the one hand, its positive effects and, on the other hand, the negative effects on the performance of the companies. Additionally, the research results have shown that negative effects are felt more strongly in the case of small and medium-sized companies than in the case of large companies.

The study is based on a model used by Campa and Goldberg (2002) and Campa et al. (2005). The ERPT is determined by applying the single equation and the cointegration approach (autoregressive distributed lag model [ARDL]), vector decomposition, and data over the period from 2002Q1 to 2016Q4. In the long-run, the ERPT is complete for the aggregate import and for the industrial sector beverages and tobacco. In the short-run, the ERPT is incomplete for the aggregate import and for majority of industrial sectors. Further, we have discovered that the degree of the ERPT is higher with heterogeneous products than with homogeneous products. Due to the inaccessibility of data for micro factors, we were not able to determine their effect on import prices. The results of ...
