This practice is concerned with the process of marital dissolution and involves a structured orientation to separation and termination in a relationship (Haynes, 1984). While superficially the opposite of marriage counselling, it does in fact encompass many of the same dynamics.

In a onedimensional setting the properties of such sequences have already been investigated by several authors [5, 8, 23, 28]. We use methods from ergodic theory to in order to investigate the distribution behavior of multidimensional versions of such sequences. As a consequence it is shown that the Kakutani-Fibonacci transformation is uniquely ergodic.

While superficially the opposite of marriage counseling, it does in fact encompass many of the same dynamics. While the end is practical-the preparation of independent households, division of community property, and the resolution of child custody/access issues-the process often requires the same sentiment found in family or marital therapy (Baptiste, 1983). This is an emphasis upon cybernetic or ,systemic issues in the couple's relationship and use of technique or intervention appropriate to them.

From our perspective, while Roberts's criticism is well intended and Haynes's response well taken, the argument should not be family systems versus Roberts's democratic, mediation-specific concepts but rather that such "either-or" posturing misses the point entirely. The issue is not which foundation best serves mediation (family systems or democratic mediation values) but whether a foundation per se is necessary at all.
