This study attempts to deal with pragmatic problems by using a mix of mental grounding techniques and pragmatic activities (awareness-raising activities). The sample of the study comprised participants from Iraq and the Czech Republic. They were firstyear college students. The researchers depended on learning zones to determine the suitable time for the experiment (fear zone). The researchers applied self-report surveys in addition to interviews to determine the students with pragmatic problems. Then, at the end of the experiment, the participants were interviewed again to evaluate the experiment in addition to the same self-report survey. Results showed that the two samples responded positively to the mix of techniques used. Moreover, the division of learning zones seems ideal to be dependent in the present study as it specifies the time of challenge the students experienced. The results also clarified that the mix of the two types of activities (pragmatic and

The study compares the data provided by ChatGPT with well-known definitions of learning in order to determine if the use of the chatbot supports language learning. The research questions focus on the alignment between ChatGPT and the definitions of learning, the potential behavioral changes resulting from learning via ChatGPT, the learning experience provided by the chatbot, and the support it offers for language learning and the development of linguistic and social skills. The methodology of the study involves a qualitative approach, collecting data from university students who used ChatGPT to complete writing assignments. The participants were observed during their interaction with ChatGPT, and interviews were conducted to gather their perspectives. The collected data were compared to a list of definitions and concepts of learning and language learning. The results...

It needs online portfolios, learning management system, systematic use of assessment, and course content in order to provide students with regular feedback. The present study deals with Iraqi college teachers' attitudes towards using virtual learning as a medium of instruction in EFL teaching context. It attempts to see college teachers' opinions concerning exchanging the traditional face to face teaching by totally online virtual courses. To gain the aim of the study, a questionnaire of two parts that is constructed by the researcher is used. Fifty college teachers have been chosen randomly to represent the main study sample. Based on the results gained, specific conclusions and implications are put forward.

The aim of this article is to explore what kind of chatbot for learning a foreign language at A1-B1 level students would welcome and create a persona (i.e., a typical foreign language user) of a chatbot for learning a foreign language. The research employed a quantitative approach using a questionnaire survey to gather data from 109 respondents. The findings revealed that simplicity, quick practice opportunities, gamification features, accessibility, and cost-free usage were the most valued features of chatbots for language learning. The study also highlights the importance of immediate feedback, user-friendly interfaces, and short-term interactions for optimal chatbot usage. Furthermore, the results shed light on the preferred learning methods, such as spoken communication and writing, as well as user goals, including vocabulary expansion, comprehension improvement, and grammar en...

This study aims to investigate the e-reading adoption and cross-cultural differences among generation X. Design/methodology/approach This study collected survey-based data from generation X e-readers in Iraq and Pakistan (Pakistan, N = 235; Iraq, N = 251). Structural equation modeling and multigroup analysis (MGA) were used to arrive at a statistical decision regarding the hypotheses and the study’s primary objectives. Findings Three hypotheses (H2, H3 and H8) were supported by both data sets. However, there is positive variance based on MGA for two hypotheses (H1 and H3) where the Pakistani sample’s path coefficients are greater than the Iraqi sample’s path coefficients. In contrast, there is negative variance based on MGA for two hypotheses (H7 and H9) where the Iraqi sample’s path coefficients are greater than the Pakistani sample’s path coeffic...

This is also true for foreign language learning where smartphones and their applications are used for practicing all four language skills and language structures. The purpose of this article is to survey the needs of university students as far as the functions and content of a mobile app for foreign language learning are concerned. The methodology was based on an online questionnaire survey, which was conducted among 103 students of the University of Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic, in the period between 30 October 2020 and 24 January 2021. There are many different perspectives on how gestures, words, and cognition relate to one another and how they could influence communication. Gestures are inferior to words because they communicate no semantic information beyond the linguistic utterances that accompany them. The current study aims to find the main gestural strategies, used by the interlocutors in English political TV Interviews that represent speech acts. It is based on the hypothesis that there are different strategies of gestures used by interlocutors in political TV interviews that represent speech acts. The selected interviews have been analyzed in the light of an eclectic model based on model Kulkarni (2013) and Searle (1979). The first is used for analyzing the main kinds of body movements and types of gesticulation, and the latter for analyzing Searle's classification of speech acts since it is a pragmatic study. Project-based learning (PBL) is a student-centered environment that emphasizes a dynamic classroom approach. It is founded on the idea that students gain a deeper understanding by actively tackling difficulties and issues from the real world. Students gain knowledge in a subject by devoting a significant amount of time to researching and solving a challenging question or interesting issue. Methods & Procedure. PBL was used in online classes during the pandemic of COVID-19. The study concentrated on projects that were created by students themselves under the guidance of teachers with the aim of determining their impact on their communication, engagement, motivation, and academic accomplishment in L2 acquisition context. The aim of this study is to verify how much digital gaming can be used for unintentional language acquisition within the concept of autonomous learning. A few young participants took part in the research in which they were observed how much digital gaming in their free time can influence autonomy in their learning of a foreign language. Several definitions from authoritative sources were chosen and applied in the given context. The final results of the study demonstrate that no real language leaning and no real autonomous learning is found in such an accidental learning environment as digital gaming. It does not provide any stimulation for the participants and these findings could be important for those who are responsible for the design of various digital tools available so that they could make them more stimulating in the area of autonomy as there is a v...

Since teachers have a lasting effect on the students, the teacher–student relationship is a pivotal factor in language learning classes. Students will not be engaged in class activities if they are not sufficiently challenged by them or if they do not find them interesting, especially in online classes. From this point of view, motivating, engaging, and testing techniques in online classes are highly important. The present study attempts to demonstrate a correlation between structured feedback and three types of engagement in an online class: cognitive, behavioral, and emotional engagement. The structured feedback, which is used at the end of each lesson lets the students express what they know, what they want to know, and what they learned. The sample of the study consists of 114 EFL third-year college students. The study's findings reveal positive and significant correlations b...

The total number of participants was forty (n = 40) and they all were first-year students at English Department. The research was conducted by using guided interviews through the Google Meet platform. The main idea of the research was to evaluate how much will experiential learning, via the reading pictures technique, influence college students' risk-taking, motivation, and anxiety. The research results show that students' motivation and risk-taking were affected positively by using pictures.
