The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the intra- and inter-rater reliability of a new equinometer. The secondary objective was to determine the load to apply on the plantar surface of the metatarsal heads to achieve the highest reliability when measuring gastrocnemius tightness. Methods The equinometer consisted of a goniometer and an electronic dynamometer, hooked up to a computer. Three raters carried out three trials of passive dorsiflexion by applying controlled pressure to the metatarsal heads of both ankles in 29 healthy subjects under two experimental conditions: knee extended (KE) and knee flexed at 30 degrees (KF). The equinometer continuously recorded the ankle dorsiflexion values (in °) corresponding to each 1 N interval of plantar pressure between 4 N and 20 N. The intra- and inter-rater reliability o...

The objective of this article is to identify and analyze the basic factors that influence the generation of social capital within the Community Development Plan of Poble Sec de Barcelona.A qualitative research process was designed in two phases: one to review the existing academic literature on the factors that generate community social capital, and a second focused on the case analysis of a Community Development Plan. Results such as the wealth of community associations, the feeling of belonging and the ability to mobilize neighbors to get involved in collective actions of a social nature, show that Community Development Plans can provide an adequate context for the gen-eration of social capital.

Research paper thumbnail of Analysis of the coaptation role of the deltoid in reverse shoulder arthroplasty. A preliminary biomechanical study

PLOS ONE, 2021

Background Lateralization of the glenoid implant improves functional outcomes in Reverse Shoulder... more Background Lateralization of the glenoid implant improves functional outcomes in Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty. Lateralization does not appear to impact the Deltoid’s Moment Arm. Therefore, the stabilizing effect described in the literature would not be the result of an increase this moment arm. A static biomechanical model, derived from Magnetic Resonance Imaging, can be used to assess the coaptation effect of the Middle Deltoid. The objective of this study was to analyze the impact of increasing amounts of glenoid lateralization on the moment arm but also on its coaptation effect. Methods Eight patients (72.6 ± 6.5 years) operated for Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty were included in the study. Three-dimensional models of each shoulder were created based on imaging taken at 6 months postoperative. A least square sphere representing the prosthetic implant was added to each 3D models. A static biomechanical model was then applied to different planar portions of the Middle Deltoid (from...

Research paper thumbnail of Digital Airborne Photogrammetry—A New Tool for Quantitative Remote Sensing?—A State-of-the-Art Review On Radiometric Aspects of Digital Photogrammetric Images

Remote Sensing, 2009

A great advantage of digital sensors is their radiometric potential. This article presents a state-of-the-art review on the radiometric aspects of digital photogrammetric images. The analysis is based on a literature research and a questionnaire submitted to various interest groups related to the photogrammetric process. An important contribution to this paper is a characterization of the photogrammetric image acquisition and image product generation systems. The questionnaire revealed many weaknesses in current processes, but the future prospects of radiometrically quantitative photogrammetry are promising.

A significant increase in water content was observed at the injury site in the posterior, anterior, and lateral white columns by 1 hour after injury and extended 2 mm above and below the site by 2 hours after injury.

We present a case with suprasellar extension manifested by hypopituitarism and visual disturbances. The treatment was trans-sphenoidal evacuation and partial removal of the capsule. We suggest that the trans-sphenoidal approach to these lesions is usually adequate and that radical removal of the capsule is not necessary.

Research paper thumbnail of Changes in the free amino acids of the injured spinal cord of the cat

Brain Research, 1980

The steady state composition of the free amino acid (AA) pool of the central nervous system (CNS)... more The steady state composition of the free amino acid (AA) pool of the central nervous system (CNS) remains relatively constant under physiologic conditions. However, in certain pathophysiologic states such as hypoglycemia and hypoxia, the steady state is well known to be significantly altered in the mammalian brain. The changes reported involve primarily those AAs which interact extensively with the intermediates of the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA) such as glutamate and aspartate. While there is abundant information concerning the composition of the brain free AA pool and its changes during pathologic conditions leading to hypoglycemia and hypoxia, there is little information on free AA in analogous conditions in the spinal cord, and practically none following traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). Spinal cord injury causes a progressive microcirculatory failure (oligaemia) within the region of trauma, and this failure has been postulated as a primary mechanism of the devastating and irreversible functional loss of the severely injured spinal cord 5,7,s,zl. It was the purpose of this study to determine the extent to which SCI and its associated oligaemia influences the free AA composition of the spinal cord. One hour following SCI, 14 identified AAs, including putative AA neurotransmitters, were determined in the gray and white matter of the thoracic (T8) cord of the cat and compared to sham-operated controls. The gray and white matter were determined separately because the two regions exhibit different pathologic response rates to trauma. The gray is destroyed usually within 3-6 h, while the white matter remains histologically intact for considerably longer periods (6-12 h) following SCI is. Eight cats (3 4-0.5 kg) of mixed breed and unselected with respect of age or sex were used for these experiments. Anesthesia was induced with ketamine HC1 (50 mg/kg) and the animals were allowed to breathe spontaneously. A cannula was inserted into the femoral artery to monitor the blood pressure and arterial blood gases. The animals were mounted in a stereotaxic frame, and the T7 and T8 spinous

The R&D effort was conducted by the Air Force Research Laboratory's (AFRL), Materials and Manufacturing Directorate (RXQ), Airbase Engineering Development Branch (RXQE). RXQE performed the demonstration at Ft. Drum, NY, a U.S. Army military reservation in support of AFRL's 2010 Tech Warrior Exercise. The demonstration involved the use of AFRL's developed unmanned firefighting vehicle (UFV), known as the Fire Defender, to showcase first generation autonomous UFV behaviors to assist emergency first responders/firefighters in hazardous fire environments.
