Fragile X syndrome (FXS) patients present neuronal alterations that lead to severe intellectual d... more Fragile X syndrome (FXS) patients present neuronal alterations that lead to severe intellectual disability, but the underlying neuronal circuit mechanisms are poorly understood. An emerging hypothesis postulates that reduced GABAergic inhibition of excitatory neurons is a key component in the pathophysiology of FXS. Here, we directly test this idea in a FXS Drosophila model. We show that FXS flies exhibit strongly impaired olfactory behaviors. In line with this, olfactory representations are less odor specific due to broader response tuning of excitatory projection neurons. We find that impaired inhibitory interactions underlie reduced specificity in olfactory computations. Finally, we show that defective lateral inhibition across projection neurons is caused by weaker inhibition from GABAergic interneurons. A bibliometric approach to research into fibromyalgia Objectives: To obtain a general and updated... more A bibliometric approach to research into fibromyalgia Objectives: To obtain a general and updated vision of research into fibromyalgia for its better understanding. A productivity analysis (by year and author) and a content analysis (by journal and topic) was carried out. Methodology: The computer databases of the Web of Knowledge: Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-EXPANDED) and Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) of the Web of Science were used. For the exploration of the topics a content analysis was done on a sample of 356 articles, obtained using a simple randomized procedure based on a random number table (risk ␣ = 0.05; z ␣ = 1.96 Ϸ 2; p = q = 0.5) with a sample error of 5%, with the purpose of reaching some general conclusions in the study of this topic area. Results and conclusions: Overall, 3,201 article references have been obtained. In the years 1998 to 2003 the production of scientific articles increased considerably (43.5%) in comparison to the previous period, from 1992 to 1997 (27.4%). In the past decade (1996-2005) the production of articles tripled with respect to the first fifteen years (1980-1995). There is an overall 306 different journals that publish on this subject. The topic area that received most attention has been the study of the physiopathologic mechanisms (31.01%). There is an increment in the articles of psychiatry and psycology in the last few years.

ABSTRACT Core histones can be modified by reversible, posttranslational acetylation of specific l... more ABSTRACT Core histones can be modified by reversible, posttranslational acetylation of specific lysine residues within the N-terminal protein domains. The dynamic equilibrium of acetylation is maintained by two enzyme activities, histone acetyltransferase and histone deacetylase. Recent data on histone deacetylases and on anionic motifs in chromatin- or DNA-binding regulatory proteins (e.g. transcription factors, nuclear proto-oncogenes) are summarized and united into a hypothesis which attributes a key function to histone deacetylation for the binding of regulatory proteins to chromatin by a transient, specific local increase of the positive charge in the N-terminal domains of nucleosomal core histones. According to our model, the rapid deacetylation of distinct lysines in especially H2A and H2B would facilitate the association of anionic protein domains of regulatory proteins to specific nucleosomes. Therefore histone deacetylation (histone deacetylases) may represent a unique regulatory mechanism in the early steps of gene activation, in contrast to the more structural role of histone acetylation (histone acetyltransferases) for nucleosomal transitions during the actual transcription process.
