Utilization of nanosilica has been proved to be beneficial because of its indispensable qualities, which helps in creating concrete with improved strength and durability. In this paper, the impact of nanosilica on toughness of cement has been researched. For this purpose, 3% of ideal measurement of nanosilica has been added to solid combinations of M40, M50, M60 grades of concrete. Additionally, the admixture Conplast SP 430 is utilized to build workability. For the experimental studies, M40, M50, M60 evaluations of cement with water concrete proportion of 0.48, 0.45, and 0.40 is used. Durability has been investigated through sorptivity, freeze & thaw, carbonation, rapid chloride porousness tests. Results of this current examination study indicated that nanosilica can be successful in improving th...

As high-rise buildings are stretching toward sky, challenges with structural behavior govern the choice and design of structural system. Lateral load resisting systems popularly in use are moment resisting frames, load bearing structural walls, dual systems, tube system, and moment-resisting frames with outrigger. The intent of the work in this paper is to investigate the performance of outrigger, location optimization, and their efficiency when used in multiple numbers placed at various heights (2/3rd, 1/2th, 1/3rd times the height of building). Models of 30 storey buildings with outrigger and belt truss systems are analyzed for earthquake and wind loads and the lateral drift responses are compared to find the optimum location of outrigger and belt truss systems. The results are interpreted and found that outrigger system can effectively reduce the lateral...

Significant reduction in the cost of sensors and connectivity, made remote data collection possible to monitor the structures and perform critical analysis so that actions can be taken to assess and enhance the residual life of the structures. Internet of Things (IoT) is the system of smart sensors that combines sensing and transmission of various responses of the structures to distant servers which continuously processes and monitors these responses. The present paper proposes an integrated platform of IoT for damage detection using a Wi-Fi module, Raspberry Pi, (Piezoelectric) PZT sensors along with Digital to Analog (DAC) and Analog to Digital converters (ADC). Responses from the host structure are extracted by the PZT sensors and a mathematical model is proposed to identify and quantify the damage compared with responses of the healthy structural member. The algorithm is executed using Python ...

However, most of them, because of their calculus-based nature, treat the search space of the problem as continuous, when it is really discrete. Sometimes this leads to unrealistic solutions and therefore, they are not used in practice, which still prefers to rely on the more traditional iterative methods. This paper describes and uses genetic algorithm approach which explains that in a certain community, only the best organisms survive from all the adverse effects, i.e.,“ survival of the fittest ”. This paper describes the use of genetic algorithm (GA) in performing optimization of 2D truss structures to achieve minimum weight. The GA uses fixed length vector of the design variables which are the cross-sectional areas of the members. The objective considered here is minimizing the weight of the structure. The constraints in this problem are the stress and deflection in no member of t...

Research paper thumbnail of Numerical investigation on EMI signatures in pipes with varied damage levels

Materials Today: Proceedings, 2021

Piezoelectric transducers have become very effective in damage detection of many important struct... more Piezoelectric transducers have become very effective in damage detection of many important structures. Smart pipes surface bonded with piezoelectric sensors are efficient in damage detection in the form of corrosion. Damaged pipes exhibit changes in its stiffness and damping characteristics which ultimately gives changes in its Electro-Mechanical Admittance signatures. In the present study smart pipe with varied corrosion lengths along the circumference are considered. The corrosion width and depth are varied for all the peripheral damage lengths and the effect on EMI signatures is studied. Based on the conductance signatures of the healthy and damaged pipes damage indices (Root Mean Square Deviation-RMSD) are computed. It is concluded that greater RMSD values indicate the larger extent of the damage. In the present study circumferential damage of length, 0.03π showed more than 4% RMSD values in the case of 0.004 mm depth of corrosion when compared to the other cases considered.

Civil Engineering Journal, Nov 4, 2017

The continuous monitoring of concrete structures using suitable NDT (Non Destructive Testing) methods and use of possible restoration methods help in a considerable reduction of the rate of deterioration of concrete structures thereby increasing the life span of structures. NDT methods have greater advantage in evaluating the uniformity, homogeneity, approximate compressive strength, durability, the extent of corrosion of rebars in concrete etc. of damaged structures. The objective of the present study is to enhance the life of 50 year old existing hospital building (Partly RC and Brick masonry) in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh. Condition assessments are carried out through a visual, field and laboratory evaluation of samples collected from the structure and results are presented in this paper. The paper also highlights the assessment of strength and durability of concrete to evaluate the extent of distress and damage in the building. Besides visual inspection, the Non Destructive Evaluation covering UPV & Rebound Hammer values and Half Cell Potential with respect to the status of corrosion of reinforcing bars and chemical tests on selected undistressed RC columns, beams, and slabs are also presented and discussed. The repair and strengthening techniques using the latest materials and possible restoration works such as column jacketing, shotcreting, anticorrosive coatings, etc. have been suggested to enhance the life of the structure.
