In the first phase, we have studied the complexation/sensing behavior of ligand 3 toward essential as well as beneficial metals such as Cu 2+ , Co 2+ and Ni 2+ by UV-vis and fluorescence techniques. Secondly, we have applied Pederson method for the extraction of these metal cations using their picrates in two-phase extraction experiments. From the results it has been deduced that 3 could serve as a versatile sensor for the detection of metal cations used in the experiments. Besides this, it may be employed as an ionophore for significant extraction of these metal ions in separation/transportation systems.

The present article describes synthesis, characterization and a detailed complexation study of ca... more The present article describes synthesis, characterization and a detailed complexation study of calix[4]arene based chemosensor (4) bearing two anthracenyl units as signaling groups on its coordination sphere. The complex formation ability of 4 toward selected transition metals such as Cd(II), Co(II), Cu(II), Ni(II) and Pb(II) has been investigated by UV-visible spectroscopy. Assessment of results reveal that the chemosensor is selective toward Cd(II) and Cu(II). The FT-IR spectroscopic method was applied for further confirmation of the complexation phenomenon. Besides this, a study regarding interference of other metals on complex formation in solution has also supported the efficient binding preference of 4 for Cd(II) and Cu(II). From the results it has been concluded that 4 has compatible coordination sphere to accommodate these metals. The similarities and differences revealed that being soft nature of both metals and because of diagonal relationship in the periodic table their coordination behavior toward N/O-donor ligand may be treated as a test on possibility of the Cu(II) ions to be displaced by Cd(II). The study certainly will help in understanding the hazards of Cd(II) in biological systems.

The binding affinity of 4 toward selected transition metal ions such as Cd(II), Co(II), Cu(II), Hg(II), Ni(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II) have been investigated by UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopies. From the results it has been noticed that 4 confers a pronounced preference for Hg(II) in complexation phenomenon even in the presence of other metal ions. The results of Job's plot analysis reveal 1:1 host-guest complex formation between Hg(II) and 4. The FT-IR spectroscopy also supports the complexation affinity of 4 for Hg(II).

Complexation properties of 4 toward selected transition metal ions have been investigated by UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopies. The% efficiency of 4 toward selected transition metal ions was found in order Cu(2+)>Ni(2+)>Hg(2+)>Zn(2+)>Co(2+)>Cd(2+)>Pb(2+). It has been noticed that 4 is not only proved to be an efficient Cu(2+) selective chromoionophore but also possesses an effective extraction property for transferring Cu(2+) ions from an aqueous to dichloromethane layer. The FT-IR spectroscopic method has also been applied for further confirmation of the complexation phenomenon of 4 with Cu(2+) ion and found adequate.

It has been evaluated that resin 5 possesses greater interaction for As(III) with maximum sorption (97% at pH 1) as compared to As(V) (89% at pH 7). Similarly, it has been noticed that the behavior of resin 4 is opposite to the resin 5. Its interaction with As(V) is greater (95% sorption at pH 5) than for As(III) (68% sorption at pH 1). Sorption process was also explored through FT-IR technique, which shows good interaction between sorbent and sorbate. Concerning regeneration ability, resin 4 was found to be more efficient than 5 and could be used repeatedly for the sorption of both As(III) and As(V) effectively. Best regeneration was achieved by using 0.1 M NaOH solution for desorption. The sorption process for both resins needs a very short time interval (15 to 20 min) with maximum sorption capacity (i.e. N 95%).

The complexation behavior of 3 toward the selected transition metals has been explored through FT-IR, UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopic techniques. It has been found that the ligand 3 has remarkable complexation ability for all selected transition metal (Cd 2+ , Cu 2+ , Ni 2+ , Co 2+ , Pb 2+ , Hg 2+) ions used in the experiment with exceptionally high affinity for Hg 2+ ions. Besides this, by applying method of continuous variation, i.e. Job's method; the stoichiometric ratio for the complexation between 3 and Hg 2+ ion in acetonitrile has been determined, which indicates that 3 forms a 1:1 metal:ligand complex. The strong complexation behavior of 3 for Hg 2+ ions was also confirmed by FT-IR and fluorescence spectroscopy. Consequently, it has been deduced that 3 is a versatile compound and can be used in diverse fields such as analytical/environmental chemistry and sensor technology.

PAC4 shows remarkable discernable colorimetric variations on addition of Cu(II) ions. TGA and FT-IR spectroscopic method also verifies the fluorescence and UV-visible spectral results. g r a p h i c a l a b s t r a c t p-(N,N-diphenylamino)methylcalix[4]arene (PAC4) was found to be a highly Cu(II) selective and sensitive colorimetric/fluorescent sensor material. High selectivity of PAC4 may be due to its compatibility with Cu(II) in respect of size of cavity, ionic radii, nature and number of binding sites, and geometry that help in selective complexation.
