The composites without Co were used as the surface layers and the composites containing Co were used as the inner layers. The flexural strength, fracture toughness, and hardness of the composites were tested, and the fracture surfaces and indention cracks were observed. The experimental results showed that the flexural strength and fracture toughness were largely increased by the graded structure and the high hardness was still maintained. The five-layer graded nano-composites, with a thickness ratio of 0.2, which were sintered under a pressure of 30 MPa at 1700 1C in vacuum condition for 45 min, had the optimum comprehensive mechanical properties with a flexural strength of 992 MPa, a hardness of 17.83 GPa, and a fracture toughness of 10.5 MPa Á m 1/2. The formation of elongated β-Si 3 N 4 grains and the residual compressive stress in the surface layer induced by the graded structure contributed to the improved properties. A synergistic effect of intergranular and transgranular fracture, crack bridging, and deflection contributed to the strengthening and toughening mechanisms.

The temperature and the oxygen partial pressure dependencies of the electronic conductivity of ͓(... more The temperature and the oxygen partial pressure dependencies of the electronic conductivity of ͓(ZrO 2) 1Ϫx (CeO 2) x ͔ 0.8 (YO 1.5) 0.2 ͑x ϭ 0-1, 0.1 step͒ solid solutions were measured by dc polarization using a Hebb-Wagner's ion-blocking cell. The main charge carrier was electron for ceria-containing compositions (x у 0.1) in a whole range of measured oxygen partial pressure ͓log(p O 2 /Pa) ϭ Ϫ6 to 3͔. With increasing CeO 2 concentration, the electronic conductivity drastically increased for x ϭ 0-0.5, slightly decreased for x ϭ 0.5-1.0, and showed a maximum at x ϭ 0.5. The electronic conductivity is proportional to p O 2 Ϫ1/4 at the higher oxygen partial pressures and p O 2 Ϫ1/m (m Ͼ 4) at the lower oxygen partial pressures. It is suggested that Ce 4ϩ ions in ZrO 2-CeO 2-YO 1.5 solid solutions with low CeO 2 concentration were reduced more easily. The compositional dependence of the electronic conductivity can be explained by the reduction of Ce 4ϩ to Ce 3ϩ and the stabilization of Ce 3ϩ ion in the ͓(ZrO 2) 1Ϫx (CeO 2) x ͔ 0.8 (YO 1.5) 0.2 structure.
