Several pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical strategies were proposed to contain the virus dissemination, including vaccination and lockdowns. One of the consequences of the pandemic was the denial or delay of access to convenient health care services, but also potentially the increase of adverse events within those services, like the number of hospital infections. Therefore, the main question here is: What happened to the performance and sustainability of hospitals? The main goal of this work was to test if the Portuguese public hospitals' performance has been affected by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. We used the Benefit-of-Doubt method integrated with the Malmquist Index to analyze the performance evolution over time. Then, we employed a multiple regression model to test whether some pandemic-related variables could explain the performance results. We considered a database of 40 Por...

As research in this area progresses, knowledge becomes the primary motivation for patients to adopt a better quality of life. Consequently, many health units have struggled to develop solutions to manage excessive demand while maintaining a high quality of service to enhance patient satisfaction and boost revenues. One of these tactics is using simulation models as a method of operational research to analyze the flow of patients and predict potential solutions to enhance resource efficiency while decreasing waiting time. This work aims to develop and demonstrate a simulation model that replicates the functioning of a hospital unit. For this purpose, data derived from the health services of the Imaging Department of a private hospital, located in Lisbon, Portugal, were used. This model will replicate the daily flow that this...

The objective of this study is to specify the factors that influence purchase intention of counterfeit products. A questionnaire was applied to a group of Portuguese consumers, wherein 43% male and 57% female, with an average age of 32.59 years (SD = 9.78). The middle class registered the highest number of responses (86%), followed by the upper class (11%). Most respondents had higher education (76%). This group agreed to declare that they purchase counterfeit luxury products. Qualtrics software was used to validate one hundred responses. Data analysis was performed using SPSS.The results show that the three most popular counterfeit products are bags, clothes, and watches; the three brands that are most easily for sale are Louis Vuitton, Ray-Ban, and Nike; the main motivation associated with counterfeit goods is lower price (44%). The main sources are s...

This research method is an integrated system and offers the opportunity for a holistic view that combines data collection methods such as archival searches, interviews, questionnaires and observation. The data collection needed to build a case study is labour-intensive, can last months or even years, and data overload seems almost inevitable. The case study is an empirical inquiry that investigates a contemporary phenomenon within a real-life context. In this research method, qualitative data usually predominates, but quantitative data often appears in case studies. Some research studies consider the case study to be a research method for validating and constructing theory. Other research highlights that all social science studies must start with a theory based on a review o...

It is important to realize at the psychological level the reasons why students seek this challenge, which will impact their lives. With this article we intend to carry out a literature review as well as to find out the main destinations and the main reasons that lead the students of management to make a mobility. The study of the factors that contribute to student motivation is pertinent, first because these factors are indicators of students' performance, and second, in the current context of constant changes, knowing the motivational factors can help to understand both the impacts of these changes and future ones Tendencies. For the study we used an interview survey, through semi-structured interviews, supported by a script with mostly open questions, which made it possible to obtain information about each of the dimensions under analysis. The semi-structured interview was conducted at a higher institute, a reference in Lisbon, directed to teaching management in a sample of 600 students and lasted approximately 20 minutes. About sixty-six interviews were held, with the preferred destinations of management students being Slovenia (17 students) and Hungary (12 students). The main focus was to seek to know, how these students perceive their academic course, with particular emphasis on the lived experience. The results obtained in our study are in agreement with the studies carried out and described previously. The most important reasons for students to go on mobility is Grow personally (98%), Have a new adventure (95%) and Improve the foreign language (95%). The Tree most reasons students choose to define their destination are Cost of living (98%), Security (95%) and Cultural country (91%).

The selective concentration of Salmonella genomic DNA by immunomagnetic separation (IMS) and multiple displacement amplification (MDA) shortened the time for culture enrichment of Salmonella-spiked raw chicken breast samples by over 12 h while permitting serotyping and high-fidelity single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) typing of the pathogen using short shotgun sequencing reads. The herein-termed quasimetagenomics approach was evaluated on Salmonella-spiked lettuce and black peppercorn samples as well as retail chicken parts naturally contaminated with different serotypes of Salmonella. Culture enrichment of between 8 and 24 h was required for detecting and subtyping naturally occurring Salmonella from unspiked chicken parts compared with 4-to 12-h culture enrichment when Salmonella-spiked food samples were analyzed, indicating the likely need for longer culture enrichment to revive low levels of stressed or injured Salmonella cells in food. A further acceleration of the workflow was achieved by real-time nanopore sequencing. After 1.5 h of analysis on a potable sequencer, sufficient data were generated from sequencing the IMS-MDA products of a cultured-enriched lettuce sample to enable serotyping and robust phylogenetic placement of the inoculated isolate.

Given that business cycles are a fact, auditors need to understand how they respond to increases in risk during a poor economy in ways other than increasing fees or resigning from audit engagements, neither of which is necessarily optimal to do during economic downturns. This paper summarizes Bagley et al. (2016) and provides alternative strategies firms can utilize to mitigate risk, regardless of economic conditions.
