Chemical-based fertilizers, fungicides, herbicides and pesticides have been in continuous and widespread use in conventional farming in Indonesia ever since. Concurrently, international peer-reviewed scientific research has reported the detrimental effects of their widespread use on complex ecosystems, in particular, on pollinating insect populations such as bees. Its growth is spread in almost all areas in Indonesia with different kinds of bamboo in each region. Bamboo has the power to replace the function of wood and even iron. With large amounts, the rapid growth and relatively easy to breed, the bamboo be an option to a green material in line with the demands of the world in the current era of global warning. The research that we conduct began with a survey and data collection of the characteristic, type and technical processing of bamboo through the interview process, the learning process in the field and workshops and literature studies at two centers of bamboo located in Bali and Yogyakarta. And followed by the process of analyzing the type of bamboo and its properties and then made a prototype design of interior elements that are suitable to the system of knock down houses which has been pre-designed by our team. As for the long-term objective of this research is to put bamboo as the main option for sustainable materials ‘of the main ingredient of’ green; design based interior products. The specific target of this research is to optimize the use of bamboo with appropriate processing method to produce compact contemporary design interior according to its function for the composite house with a detachable system (knock down) located in disaster-prone areas and coastal areas as well as socialize it to fellow designers, industry and the general public. By using the method of R&D or Research and Development with the 4D method which includes Define, Design, Develop and Disseminate, it is expected to optimally achieve the long-term goals and specific targets of this research.

Through our on-going community project that develops recycled craft products in the interest of obtaining extra income for the mothers of Penjaringan, Jakarta, obstacles and prospects of employing participatory design method has been identified. The method which is known to bring the whole stakeholders into the design process is now preferred when the end product is intended to respond the real needs of its users. However, for such methods to be successful, designers in charge to work with underprivileged citizens must understand that they will be working under very different conditions than when doing participatory design in an established society. There are economical (quantitative) as well as cultural (qualitative) discrepancies among plural settlers of Jakarta, where the underprivileged suffers the least access to good quality infrastructure, which in turn affecting their self-actualization, aesthetic sensibilities and workmanships. Our field study revealed that participatory design methods may be advantageous only if the designers firstly take the lead and empower those who have been hindered economically and culturally, before we can expect them to participate in the design process optimally. As long as the empowerment process is carried out, we realized that participatory design with underprivileged citizens of developing countries has a prospect to bring out outcomes of at least two types: First, products that suits participant’s existing socio-economical condition, and second, the empowered design process itself improves citizens’ workmanships valuable for their own future productivities.

Classically built in a fairly simple form, ondel-ondel presents itself in various ways at every performance. Now, ondel-ondel is increasingly found throughout Jakarta, having gone through numerous changes in its costume elements. Whereas it is usually meant to be shown as a couple, nowadays a single ondel-ondel can be found cruising alleys with a mere digital sound system as musical accompaniment. Once respected and feared for its looks, today it is belittled by its own people. Due to this phenomenon, this research aimed to answer the questions of who influenced this ideological change, which ruling elite encouraged their ideology, and what the ideology is. Interviews and direct observations produced stories and photographs, while literature and media studies provided a historical background. Roland Barthes' semiotic connotations with a historical perspective were used to read the hidden concepts behind these signs, which connect the changes of the costume elements through the important events in Betawi society during the period of 1970-2020. The different interests of each party brought more conflict in their relations, which created a dynamic cultural negotiation. Based on the results, the terms for the ondel-ondel models were identified, specifically a personification model, Islamic model, and commercial model, each named after the historical events and ideology brought about by Jakarta's ruling elites.
