Sudan has over the past been a country of great development and a mixture of cultures. It owes th... more Sudan has over the past been a country of great development and a mixture of cultures. It owes this to its various conquerors and colonizers that include the Ottomans, the British and the Egyptians. The latter two also co-ruled the country known as Sudan in the 20 th Century. Each of these civilizations has left its mark on the former territory known as Sudan before South Sudan managed to get independence. The administrative boundaries that encompass the state of Sudan did not take into consideration any historical background, religion or the relation between the various groups found in that territory. The North and South territories were autonomous regions under British rule but were merged into a single administrative region in 1946 and Arabic was made the formal language. Sudan fought for autonomy from the British and gained independence in 1956. In 1955 prior to independence in 1956, civil unrest had begun in Sudan because the black population was uneasy with being ruled by the majority Arabs from the North. There is a known class, race religious and ethnic struggle in Sudan. The Arabs viewed the blacks as inferior and as slaves. Khartoum, the capital of Sudan had initially been set up as a trade route for slaves. This animosity continued throughout generations in Sudan and racism still existed during independence
