In the light of Agreement on Agriculture of WTO, member countries are required to provide increased market access, decrease domestic support and tariff. These agreements are likely to increase the cost of production of various agricultural products for farmers producing these products, and make international competition tougher for export of agricultural commodities. There are three possible ways to decrease the cost of production—by decreasing cost of inputs, by developing cost effective high yielding technologies or by improving management practices. There is little hope for decrease in the cost of inputs. Over the recent years prices of the petroleum products, were revised upward several times and this trend is likely to continue in future. Lab., was studied while growing naturally infected chickpea seeds and healthy seeds artificially inoculated with pathogen inoculum. The disease symptoms appeared on young seedlings within a week after emerging from soil. The seedling infection was due to contact of growing point to the pathogen inoculum from infected seeds during the process of shoot differentiation under the ground. Based on the observations of disease symptoms on the seedlings from contaminated seeds, it is concluded that contamination of plumule with pathogen inoculum during germination appears to be a major mechanism by which the pathogen transmission occurs on aerial parts of the plants.

A methodology to estimate chip lifetime due to backend dielectric breakdown is presented. It incorporates failures due to parallel tracks, the width effect, field enhancement due to line ends, and variation in activity and temperature. Different workloads are considered as well, in order to evaluate aging effects in microprocessors running realworld applications with realistic use conditions.

Craniocerebral injuries secondary to improvised explosive devices have not been widely reported in the context of unarmored civilians. This series intends to report the spectrum of these injuries secondary to suicidal and implanted bombs as encountered at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Pakistan (AKUH). Further, a few pertinent management guidelines have also been discussed. METHODS The hospital database and clinical coding during a 5-year period were examined for head injuries secondary to terrorism-associated blasts. In addition to patient demographics, data analysis for our series included initial Glasgow Coma Scale, presenting neurological complaints, associated non-neurological injuries, management (conservative or operative) to associated complications, and discharge neurological status. RESULTS A total of 16 patients were included in this series. Among them 9 we...

Providing a clear picture of science and technology status is an essential requirement of this process. In this paper we use descriptive and comparative approaches to discuss S&T development in Pakistan and selected Asian and Nordic countries. This paper seeks to discuss different aspects of S&T in Pakistan based on a comprehensive set of indicators i.e. input indicators (financial and human resources) and output indicators (scientific publications, patents and high technology exports). The S&T indicators in Pakistan are also compared with those of other countries and we find that Pakistan manifestly lags behind most of the select...

A small-scale action research study was organized in one of the Government High schools of Gilgit Baltistan to explore the use of animated videos for teaching an abstract concept of ‘states of matter’. The study was conducted in a science classroom of Grade V. The research found how animated video worked in Grade V science teaching to enhance students’ conceptual understanding of states of matter. This action study was conducted over a period of five weeks comprising of three cycles. In the reconnaissance stage, three lessons of science teacher were observed, a pre-test, a focused group discussion with six purposively selected students and an interview of the science teacher was carried out. In cycle 1, 2 and 3, six lessons were planned and taught. Data was collected through observations, focused group discussions, interviews and pre and post-tests. The finding of the study showed that students gradually got familiar with animated videos, started sharing their ideas in a group, and resultantly these animated videos proved meaningful in supporting their understanding of states of matter. The findings also showed that students took an initial step towards conceptual understanding- a slight bent from teacher-centered to student-centered learning. The study also pointed out at both teacher’s and students’ misconceptions about states of matter. However, this study has implications for the school in terms of students’ better learning and effective teaching. Therefore, schools need to relook its method of teaching from rote memorizing to conceptual understanding, and teachers need to change their lectured based teaching to activity/animated video-based teaching

It should guarantee the food is safe to be eaten by the consumers. However, food poisoning cases are still arising from time to time. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practices of food safety among food-handlers. A quantitative method is applied in this study involving 140 foodhandlers. The results showed that respondents do possess the right attitude; however, there are some vital aspects of food safety that still can be improvised. In addition, the respondents were reported to have good knowledge of food handling. In terms of practice, the respondents do practice the important aspects of food safety and hygiene, but still, there are some of them that are being neglected. Hence, the outcomes of this study may perhaps increase the awareness of food-handlers regarding the importance of hygiene in food premises.

In this paper, A new chaos based communications system is proposed by sending the reference signal and information bearing signal in one time slot utilizing the orthogonality between chaotic segment and its time flipped version. This doubles the data rate and enhance Bit Error Rate(BER) performance with respect to DCSK. The proposed system is evaluated using real time simulations in AWGN channel. Moreover, a time flipping unit is designed to synchronize each chaotic segment with its mirrored version. Results indicate that the proposed scheme has an average gain of 4 dB in comparison to the standard DCSK at moderate Eb/No values.

The KBE concept was first used by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) describing it as an economy which is directly based on the production, distribution and use of knowledge and information. Subsequently, the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (APEC) and the World Bank Institute (WBI), along with the OECD, extended the concept and developed frameworks to compare the status of the knowledge base of different economies. These frameworks identify four core dimensions: knowledge acquisition, production, distribution and utilization, and use many structural and qualitative variables in their analysis. But none of the current methodologies explicitly divide the KBE indicators under these four core dimensions or measure the efficiency with which knowledge inputs are transformed to knowledge outputs. This paper attempts to describe a policy-focused KBE framework, selecting appropriate indicators from the existing OECD and WBI KBE frameworks for assessing the relative input-output efficiency of Pakistan and other Asian countries in the development of their KBEs. This paper presents the use of an atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) to deposit an amine functional polymer film onto the inner surface of a glass microcapillary. A micro discharge was generated in a DBD chip made from a rectangular borosilicate glass capillary using externally attached parallel plate electrodes. A new microplasma configuration which consists of a perforated high voltage electrode and a ground electrode with large surface area is implemented to sustain a stable glow discharge at atmospheric pressure and a temperature of 35°C. Polymerization was performed using a laboratory made plasma source working at a frequency of 8 kHz with 50% duty ratio of the inverter. The monomer precursors allylamine and ethylenediamine were selected to optimize the polymerization conditions at atmospheric pressure. The hydrophobicity and philicity of the deposited surface were controlled as functions of plasma power. The atmospheric pressure plasma polymerized (APPP) films were characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), plasma emission spectroscopy, contact angle measurements and growth rate analysis. An average growth rate of 1.18 μg s −1 for plasma polymerized ethylenediamine (PPEDA) and 1.91 μg s −1 for plasma polymerized allylamine (PPAA) was obtained at a discharge power of 15 W and 10 sccm of monomer flow rate. The film thickness of 0.9 μm for PPEDA and 2.1 μm for PPAA was determined using AFM for deposition time of 10 min. Polymerization results showed that the properties of APPP films can be controlled through optimization of parameters such as discharge power, treatment time and flow rates of the main gas and monomer vapors.
