Research paper thumbnail of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: Assessing the Reliability of Risk Factor-Based Screening in a Rural Nigerian Hospital

IntegrativeJournal of Medical Sciences, 2021

This prospective study determined the proportions of women with GDM who were low risk. A hundred and seventeen pregnant women of gestational age 24-32weeks were screened with 50-g glucose challenge Test (GCT) and their GDM risk factor status noted. GCT positive women had 75-gOGTT, using 2013WHO GDM diagnostic criteria. The prevalence of GDM was 7.7% and about 55% of women with GDM had "low risk" status. There was no significant difference in the plasma glucose values of low risk and high risk women. With more than 50% of women with GDM being low risk, risk factorbased screening approach may be very unreliable in screening for GDM.

This hypertensive disorder of pregnancy remains a disease of theories due to its unclear etiology. We evaluated for possible associations between maternal serum lipids and preeclampsia. Methods: This was a prospective case-control study that recruited 60 consenting women diagnosed with preeclampsia (cases) and 60 normotensive healthy pregnant women (controls), matched for maternal age and gestational age over an 8-month period (18 th June, 2014 to 18 th February, 2015) at the Federal Teaching Hospital Ido-Ekiti, Nigeria. Cases and controls were recruited using the non-probability convenience sampling. Fasting venous blood samples were collected in both cases and controls and analyzed for serum total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high density lipoproteins (HDL) and low density lipoproteins (LDL) using Randox standard enzymatic methods. Data obtained were analyzed using SPSS version 18 to compare and test for significance using Student t-test, Chi-square, and Pearson's correlation as the appropriate. Tests of association were determined using logistic regression models. The difference was considered significant at P < 0.05. Findings: The mean serum levels of TC, HDL and LDL were significantly (p < 0.001

This has also been linked to increase body weight in a non pregnancy state. Pregnant women experience weight gained within a short period than non pregnant women. Some pregnant women probably experience increase in lipid peroxidation product (oxidative stress) due to increase body weight OBJECTIVE: To determine the

Many theories have been implicated in its genesis, crucial among which is the defective 2nd wave of trophoblastic invasion/placentation. Maternal serum alpha fetoprotein is a marker of placental abnormalities and may correlate with clinical features of significant management implications. This study evaluated the role of maternal Alpha-fetoprotein concentration as a marker of disease severity and foetal outcome in patients with pregnancy induced hypertension at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti, Ekiti state, Nigeria. Methodology: This was a prospective study in which 44 patients with PIH and 88 matched controls that satisfied the inclusion criteria were recruited using convenience sampling technique for cases and systematic random sampling for controls. Relevant socio-demographic, maternal medic...
