Li... more Municipal solid waste management is a global contemporary issue affecting cities' authorities. Like other major cities of the world, Kano metropolis, with a population of more than four million, is faced with serious solid waste management problems. This study assesses the suitability of existing locations of solid waste disposal sites within metropolitan Kano. Satellite imageries (Landsat, AsterDEM), GPS-locations of the waste disposal sites, and topographical map of Kano metropolis were used as data for this study. The data were modeled and analyzed using a multi-criteria decision technique. The output produces restriction and suitability maps for solid waste disposal within the metropolis. Results show that only 26 percent of the existing solid waste disposal sites are suitable, while 74 percent are unsuitable sites. The study recommends the relocation of those existing unsuitable solid waste disposal sites to more environmentally favorable sites as highlighted in this study.

The aim is to quantify and to identify the existing locations of waste disposal sites by mapping their spatial distribution within the metropolitan Kano. QUICKBIRD satellite imageries; locations of existing waste disposal sites collected using Global Positioning System (GPS); and topographical map (1:5000 scale) of Kano metropolis were used to generate data for the study. The data were prepared and analysed using ArcMap 10.2.1 and Erdas Imagine 11 software to produce the spatial distribution maps for solid waste disposal sites within the metropolis. The result shows that out of the 300 existing waste disposal sites assessed, the city has fairly well-distributed waste disposal sites. Conversely, the disposal sites are more clustered in the centre of the metropolis than the outskirts. However, about 80 percent of the sites are either located very close to roads, settlements or water bodies. Also, while about 92 percent of the existing waste disposal locations are open space, only about 7 percent are containers (closed dumping sites). Correspondingly, about 89 percent are authorised dumping sites and only about 11 percent are unauthorised illegal. The study recommends that policymakers should intervene and relocate the existing unauthorized dump sites to more suitable areas.

In the past, indeed, women were never equal to men in the political sphere, because in the precolonial Africa, they were being allowed by men to ruled kingdoms, established cities, launched military conquests, and formed states. However, they unfortunately lost out in such arrangements and the social status with the coming and spread of Islam and Christianity and later colonization. Although women are key actors in the democratization process world over, they have now been politically, socially and economically marginalized especially in the Sub-Saharan African region. Marginalization has been a great challenge to the women of the region due to some socio-religious beliefs that came to the fore particularly with the emergence of Islam and Christianity. Likewise, in the contemporary African ...

The bus injected to branch current technique (BIBC) has been employed for direct power flow analysis. A multi-objective function to minimize active losses and bus voltage deviation subject to satisfying the network constraints has been formulated for use in the wAFSA. The approach is evaluated on the Standard IEEE 33-bus test network and validated against harmony search algorithm (HSA) technique for steady-state constant load analysis. The results demonstrated significant improvement of the wAFSA model with a 28.96% reduction in total active power loss and a 43.11% improvement in overall system voltage profile. Against the HSA, the wAFSA approach achieved a 0.27% loss reduction and 5.15% voltage profile improvement.

There are provisions for accommodating Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in NorthEast Nigeria. ... more There are provisions for accommodating Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in NorthEast Nigeria. However, there are some challenges in the camps where these IDPs are accommodated. They include issues such as killings, kidnappings, stealing, rapes, and shortage of food and diversion of relief materials, among others. These challenges have made life difficult for the IDPs, donor agencies and the government at large in managing and securing the camps with respect to security provision and the distribution of relief materials to the IDPs. This study notes that the existing manual method of keeping records of IDPs in the camps is tedious and allows insecurity and improper documentation. A web-based application which provides a means of ensuring adequate documentation of IDPs by capturing the necessary data to ensure the proper identification and accounting of the IDPs is developed. Also, the use of fingerprint identification system which is a form of biometric identification is embedded in this application. The application utilizes a portable fingerprint scanner as its input in acquiring fingerprints of the IDPs. It verifies the fingerprint by displaying the associated image and other personal details of the internally displaced person. The system is also capable of querying the database for the IDPs. The system was developed using PHP, CSS, JAVA and MYSQL. Object Oriented Analysis and Design Methodology (OOADM) was used to analyze the system and Unified Modeling Language (UML) was used to model the software. The information generated from the enrollment and biometric capturing of IDPs will effectively verify and identify the IDPs. This developed system will be used to enhance the security, the distribution of relief materials, and the managing of IDPs in the camps.

ADHD increases the severity of SUD and has negative influence on the prognosis of the disorder. The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence and correlates of ADHD in individuals with SUD. During 2013-2015, a cross-sectional descriptive study of 233 drug treatmentseeking individuals was assessed. Diagnosis of ADHD was done using DSM-IV criteria with the Diagnostic Interview for ADHD in Adults (DIVA 2.0), while Semi-structured Assessment for Drug Dependence and Alcoholism (SSADDA 6.1) and Adult ADHD Quality of Life (AAQoL) were used for diagnosis of substance use disorder and assessment of QoL, respectively. Multivariable logistic regression was used to determine factors that were associated with ADHD. The prevalence of ADHD in SUD patients was 21.5%, with the combined subtype being the most prevalent. SUD patient with ADHD had more history of severe dependence on cigarette, depression, suicidal ideation, aggression, dependence on benzodiazepine and heroin, number of relapses, poor QoL and number of hospitalization. After logistic regression, only the number of relapses (p = 0.004), history of aggression (<0.001) and poor QoL differentiated between SUD patients with ADHD from those with no diagnosis of ADHD. The prevalence of ADHD in SUD individuals is high and may be associated with a more severe phenotypic expression of SUD.

Few prospective studies have been reported from developing countries. Aim The aim of the present study was to assess the functional outcome in COS and the factors associated with poor outcome. Methods This 3-year prospective study included 19 patients with COS. Diagnosis was based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th ed., criteria using the Kiddie-Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia − Present and Lifetime Version; severity was assessed through the Positive and Negative Symptoms Scale, whereas the measure of outcome used was Children’s Global Assessment Scale. Results The mean duration of follow-up was 39.53 (SD ±5.37) months. The mean age of onset of COS was 10.47 (SD ±0.91) years. At the end of the study, 31.6% of the participants had good outcome, 42.1% had moderate outcome, and 26.3% had poor outcome. Factors associated with poor outcome included history of perinatal complication, more negative symptoms, and longer duration of untreated psychosis. Conclusion More than a third of the sample showed good outcome over the few years of follow-up. On the basis of the findings of this study, we recommend an early intervention.

This study was undertaken to examine the readability of the Nigerian Company Income Tax Act 2007 ... more This study was undertaken to examine the readability of the Nigerian Company Income Tax Act 2007 (CITA 2007), which is the main reference for taxpayers who have intention to comply. For that purpose, the researchers employed readability formulae namely Flesch Reading Ease Score (FRES), Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level (F-KGL), Average Sentence Length (ASL) and Percentage of Passive Voice (PPV). FRES measures the readability of technical writing and rates texts on a 0-100-point scale, while F-KGL translates the 0-100 raw FRES into the number of years of education generally required to understand the materials. On the other hand, ASL and PPV deal with average length and percentage of passive voice, respectively. All these measures were calculated using Microsoft Word 2000. The study found that CITA 2007 has low level of readability which made the Act very difficult to understand. Further, the results indicate that CITA 2007 can only be understood by those with tertiary education. The study recommends that tax simplification policy in Nigeria should include language simplification to enable taxpayers to understand the Act correctly which subsequently motivate them to comply voluntarily; and consequently result in more tax revenue to boost the economy of the nation.

The analysis is carried out by segregating households into 3 different income groups and the welfare impact due to subsidy cut is measured. The results show that the reduction in welfare due to higher price is larger for the middle 40% co mpared to the top and the bottom 20%. Th is is due to the fact that the middle income group has a larger budget share on fuel. Fuel subsidies are found to be costly in protecting poor households due to substantial leakage of benefits to higher inco me group but the welfare loss for the lower income group due to subsidy cut is somewhat higher due to the s maller size of their inco me. Thus, wh ile subsidy reform is undeniably necessary, our findings suggest that it must be carried out cautiously. Contrary to co mmon ly held views, our study suggests that the reform must be accompanied with strategies and programs to mitigate the welfare loss, not only for the lower income but also the middle income group.
