In this study the effect of the approach angle on the discharge efficiency of the broad crested weir was investigated experimentally. Four different approach angles were tested under steady state conditions by using three different discharge values. Experimental results indicate that the discharge coefficient is not only a function of crest length but also a function of approach angle. A modified new non dimensional empirical relation involved approach angle has been proposed.

(Turk J Ophthalmol 2014; 44: 419-23) Anah tar Ke li me ler: GİL gücü hesaplama, parsiyel kohorens interferometri, optik düşük kohorens reflektometri, refraktif sapma Objectives: To compare the measurements obtained by partial coherence interferometry (PCI) (AL Scan, Nidek) and optical low coherence reflectometry (OLCR) (Lenstar, Haag-Streit AG) and to evaluate the inter-device differences with respect to deviation from target refraction. Ma te ri als and Met hods: The medical charts of the patients who underwent cataract surgery between January 2013 and February 2013 in our department were retrospectively evaluated. Forty-two eyes with ultrasonographic biometry, PCI, and OLCR measurements performed in the same visit were included in the study. Ophthalmological and systemic findings of the patients, axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), intraocular lens (IOL) power calculations recommended for emetropy, and keratometry measurements (K1, K2) in all eyes, and deviations from target refraction in 20 eyes were noted. Re sults: The mean age of the patients was 68.00±13.15 years; female/male ratio was 7/20. There were no statistically significant differences between the two devices with respect to AL, K2, and recommended IOL power measurements, whereas ACD measured by PCI was 0.02 mm more shallow and K1 values in PCI were 0.27 D steeper (p=0.003 and p=0.037, respectively). There was a good Özet Summary 420 correlation between the measurements of the two devices (p<0.0001). Moreover, deviations from target refractions measured at 1 week and 1 month did not differ significantly between the two devices (p=0.152 and p=0.181, respectively). Conclusion: It is important to know the correlation and differences between measurements obtained by different biometry devices. In our study, as measurements of PCI and OLCR correlated well despite the negligible differences, we suggest that both methods can be used interchangeably.

Materials and methods: This study examined 91 healthy school-age children aged 7-15 years prospectively. Standardized sonographic cIMT measurements and analyses were performed. Body mass index and blood pressure were obtained, and atherosclerotic risk factors were investigated. Age-and sex-specific cIMT measurements for different age groups were calculated and the relation with sex was investigated. Results: Regarding the total study group, mean cIMT measurements for age groups 7-9, 10-12, and 13-15 years were 4.1 ± 0.5 mm, 4.4 ± 0.6 mm, and 4.6 ± 0.4 mm, respectively. cIMT did not differ between boys and girls in the same age group. Age related analyses showed significant variations among the age groups with positive correlation between cIMT and age. Conclusion: Our results suggest that age-related physiologic thickening of the carotid artery intima-media occurs not only in adults but also in children and that sex is not a factor for cIMT differences in childhood.

Methods: Eyes with macular edema secondary to BRVO and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) worse than 20/40 were included. Eyes eligible for Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion Study (BVOS) guidelines received grid laser treatment first. Those that were not improved at least two lines following grid laser or that did not meet those guidelines received 4 mg IVTA injection. The efficacy of IVTA treatment was assessed by analyzing the change in BCVA and reduction in central macular thickness (CMT) measured by optical coherence tomography. Intraocular pressure (IOP) spikes and other complications were recorded. Results: The data from 37 eyes were included; in 12 of them IVTA injection was given after grid laser while 25 of them received IVTA as a primary treatment. Mean follow-up was 9.6 Ϯ 4.5 months. BCVA was 0.06 Ϯ 0.30 and 0.17 Ϯ 0.50 in the primary and secondary IVTA injection groups, respectively. In the primary injection group, there was a statistically significant gain in BCVA throughout the follow-up (P Ͻ 0.05), while a small increase in BCVA was noted only at the third month visit in the secondary IVTA injection group (P ϭ 0.04). Average CMT were 434.8 Ϯ 122.1m and 389.0 Ϯ 171.9 m before IVTA injection in the two groups, respectively. In the primary IVTA injection group, CMT decreased at 1 month following IVTA injection and remained statistically significant until the sixth month visit (P Ͻ 0.05). In the secondary IVTA injection group, a slight reduction in CMT was noted only in the first month visit (P ϭ 0.02). Pre-IVTA BCVA was found to be the single statistically significant predictor of BCVA gain following IVTA injection. In 8 patients (21.6%), the IOP increased above 25 mmHg postoperatively, and was successfully managed by medical treatment. Endophthalmitis did not develop in any of the patients. Conclusion: IVTA injection produced a significant reduction of macular edema in eyes with BRVO either with or without prior grid laser treatment. Reduction of CMT increased the BCVA in most of the eyes receiving IVTA primarily, while only a slight improvement of BCVA was found in eyes with prior grid laser. The IVTA effect was transient. Larger studies are necessary to find the best approach (either grid laser or IVTA) to patients with macular edema associated with BRVO.

Treatment options include pharmacologic therapy and surgical ligation, but these are associated with potentially significant adverse effects. This report describes the effect of administering oral paracetamol to premature neonates with PDA. The study enrolled seven premature neonates followed up with the diagnosis of hemodynamically significant PDA (hsPDA) between February and December 2012 and treated with oral paracetamol. Patients with hsPDA were given at least two or more courses of ibuprofen treatment. If this therapy failed to promote ductal closure, the patients with clinical symptoms who had hsPDA defined by echocardiography were treated with oral paracetamol (15 mg/kg every 6 h). If these patients did not respond to paracetamol therapy, the PDA was closed by surgical ligation. The mean gestational age of the seven patients in this study was 26.1 weeks, and their mean birth weight was 936 g. Paracetamol treatment was started at 36.2 ± 11.6 days. The mean internal ductal diameter was 2.0 ± 0.2 mm, and the left atrium-to-aorta ratio was 1.5 ± 0.2. All the patients were administered oral paracetamol because of no response to ibuprofen treatment. The hsPDA was successfully closed with oral paracetamol in five (71.4 %) of the seven patients. The remaining two patients had surgical ligation performed, but one of them died. No side effects related to paracetamol were observed. Oral paracetamol may be used as an alternative drug for the management of hsPDA in premature neonates when ibuprofen treatment is unsuccessful and the only other therapeutic option is surgery.

Concentrations of heavy metals (Ag, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb ve Zn) were measured in running water ... more Concentrations of heavy metals (Ag, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb ve Zn) were measured in running water and in tissues (muscle, liver, gill, skin and gonads) of one commercially valuable fish species (Carasobarbus luteus) from the Orontes (Asi) River (Güzelburç region) in Hatay (Southeastern Turkey). Results for levels in water compared with national and international water quality guidelines were found at the highest concentrations in international criteria's WHO, EC and EPA, but Cd, Cu, Ni and Pb were found to exceed permissible level of drinking water in national criteria TSE-266 whereas Fe, Zn and Cr concentrations were within the permissible levels for drinking. The present study showed a significant seasonal variation (p<0.05) in the concentration of the studied metals in the selected tissues, except gonads (p>0.05), which showed seasonal variation of only Zn (p<0.05). Maximum concentrations of Ag, Cd, Cr and Pb were detected in gonads followed by liver, gill, skin and muscle while maximum concentrations of Cu, Fe, Ni and Zn were detected in liver followed by other tissues. Concentrations of heavy metals in the muscle of C. luteus were below the permissible limit for human consumption, level of Cu being very close to the permissible limit. Consequently, continuous monitoring of heavy metal concentration in edible freshwater fish will be needed in Orontes River.

The study included 21 pediatric epileptic and 22 healthy children. Intima media thickness and fasting lipid profile were assessed. Although the median value of total cholesterol was in normal limits in the oxcarbazepine group, it was significantly higher when compared with the control group. We did not observe any differences regarding triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and carotid intima media thickness. We suggest that oxcarbazepine treatment in children has a minor effect on serum lipids and it does not seem to have an atherogenic effect.
