However, the effects of smoking on COVID-19 symptoms are not well described and controversial. In this study, we aim to explore the associations between smoking and COVID-19 symptoms. Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional study using the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), Qatar database was administered to a Qatari population with confirmed COVID-19 disease who filled in pre-defined phone-call questionnaire between 27th February 2020 and 31st December 2020. We analyzed 11,701 non-vaccinated COVID-19 individuals (2952 smokers and 8749 non-smokers) with confirmed RT-PCR test results. The association of smoking and the presence of symptoms as well as patient characteristics was calculated using Pearson's Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests, adjusting for potential covariates. Results: Compared with the non-smokers, symptomatic COVID-19 infection is significantly higher in smokers. In addition, we found fever as the most common symptom developed in COVID-19 patients followed by cough, headache, muscle ache, and sore throat. As compared to other symptoms, association of smoking with chills and abdominal pain was less evident (P < 0.05 and P < 0.001, respectively). However, both groups showed similar rates of developing cough. Conclusion: In conclusion, smoking is associated with COVID-19 symptoms frequency in non-vaccinated patients; nevertheless, further investigations are necessary to understand the mechanism of this association which could generate new targets for the management of COVID-19 in smoker patients.

This resulted in a very large number of recognition methods and techniques with the aim of increasing the accuracy and robustness of existing systems. Many techniques have been developed to address the challenges and reliable recognition systems have been reached but require considerable processing time, suffer from high memory consumption and are relatively complex. The focus of this paper is on extracting subset of descriptors (less correlated and less calculations) from the co-occurrence matrix with the goal of enhancing the performance of Haralick’s descriptors. Improvements are achieved by adding the image pre-processing and selecting the proper method according to the database problem and by extracting features from image local regions.

Classification of these expressions is a normal process for humans, but it is a challenging task for machines.Lately, interest in facial expression recognition has grown, and many systems have been developed to classify expressions from facial images. Any expression recognition system is comprised of three steps. The first one is face acquisition, then feature extraction, and finally classification. The classification accuracy depends primarily on the feature extraction step. Therefore, in this research we study many texture feature extraction descriptors and compare their results under the same preprocessing circumstances; moreover, we propose two improvements for one of these descriptors, which give better results than the original one. Current work aimed at evaluating the sex-based differential hepatic genotoxic effect and the antioxidant activity as implications of subchronic aflatoxicosis B1. Albino rats were used that comprised two equal AFB1treated groups with AFB1 contaminated olive oil (50µg/kg) and a control group for each gender that received the vehicle only. Parts of animals' livers were homogenized for gene expression assessment using quantitative RT-PCR and antioxidant activity analyses. Caspase-3 immunohistopathological examination was concomitantly undertaken. Results showed that AFB1 induced significant overexpression in cell cycle proliferation (ODC1), apoptosis (Aen), and antioxidant heme oxygenase (Hmox) genes in males alongside Bax (Bcl2-associated protein) under-expression. Meanwhile, female rats showed significant overexpression for (Hmox) and under-expression of Bax and Tnf (Tumor necrosis factor). Concomitant total hepatic antioxidant activity of liver homogenates showed a reduction in males, contrasting females. Degenerate vacuolated hepatocytes, polymorphic nuclei, cellular infiltration with concomitant Caspase-3 positive cells were profound findings in male rats. Hence, AFB1 is deferentially genotoxic at the given dose especially to male rats towards carcinogenicity, oxidative stress and apoptosis compared to a brief but compensated oxidative stress in females.

The architecture of this model does not limit it to be connected to only one specific system but makes it able to be adapted to different automation systems as well as reused for new ones, packing any industrial communication protocol. The basic components have their hard-ware and software described, as well as the interfaces with the users, with the automation system, and between components. Thus, the proposed structure is presented, and later it is shown how it is possible to reuse this system for other applications. An-other aspect of the approach is to deal with uncertain statements of the user. It allows the application to interpret these inputs. Furthermore, the application learns, over time, how to better interpret user preferences and behavior patterns.

Multiple evidences linked the serum magnesium, iron and ferritin disturbance with diabetes and its complications. A case-control study was conducted at Makkah Eye Complex, Khartoum, Sudan, to compare the levels of serum magnesium, iron and ferritin in patients with diabetic retinopathy with diabetic patients without diabetic retinopathy (controls). Findings indicate that all patients had type 2 diabetes. The two groups (50 in each arm) were well matched in their basic characteristics. Median (25th-75th interquartile) of serum magnesium in patients with diabetic retinopathy were significantly lower than patients without diabetic retinopathy [1.48 (0.75-1.64) vs. 1.92 (1.4-2.3)mg/dl, P = 0.022]. The median of serum iron and ferritin were lower in cases than control group but did not reach a statistical significance [20.5 (17.2-48.0) vs. 27.0 (16.0-54.0) μg/dl, P = 0.568; 98.0 (45.0-134.75) vs. 101.0 (47.0-161.0) μg/l, P = 0.818]. The duration of diabetes [16.5 (9.3) vs. 11.2 (6.6) years; P = 0.014] and haemoglobin level [13.7 (0.9) vs. 12.5 (2.0) g/dl; P = 0.039] were significantly higher in cases group than control group. A significant inverse correlation was observed between serum magnesium and iron levels. Twenty (40 %) patients had severe non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy with mild macular edema, which is the most prevalent type among the cases group. Hypomagnesaemia among diabetic patients was associated with diabetic retinopathy, while serum iron and ferritin have no significant effect in this setting. Severe non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy with mild macular edema is the prevalent type in this study.

The LTASS only was also measured for Arabic. Speech samples (18) were recorded, using standardized equipment and procedures, in 15 localities for (usually) ten male and ten female talkers. All analyses were conducted at the National Acoustic Laboratories, Sydney. The LTASS was similar for all languages although there were many statistically significant differences. Such differences were small and not always consistent for male and female samples of the same language. For one-third octave bands of speech, the maximum short-term rms level was 10 dB above the maximum long-term rms level, consistent across languages and frequency. A "universal" LTASS is suggested as being applicable, across languages, for many purposes including use in hearing aid prescription procedures and in the Articulation Index.

At the pinnacle of his career in 1994, he was diagnosed with ethmoid carcinoma, which had invaded his frontal lobe. After major surgery and radiotherapy, he returned to his Harley Street practice a year later on a part time basis, but further ill health forced him to retire completely in 1997. He then underwent more surgery, which ultimately led to complications and his early demise. Despite such debilitating illness, Bob kept a brave front. His interests included reading, visiting his cottage in Scotland, and tinkering with his old Land Rover. He leaves his second wife, Dawn; four children; and a granddaughter.

Autologous costal cartilage for rhinoplasty is an excellent graft material providing both volume ... more Autologous costal cartilage for rhinoplasty is an excellent graft material providing both volume and quality of cartilage required for nasal reconstruction. Commonly, the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th rib costal cartilages have been harvested but other ribs such as the 10th rib are often overlooked and yet offer an excellent graft option for columellar, alar rim, nasal tip, and dorsal augmentation grafts. The use of the 10th rib costal cartilage in patients with complex secondary cleft nasal deformity has scant reference in the literature. We demonstrate our simple and quick 10th rib cartilage harvesting technique and elicit its use in secondary rhinoplasty and cleft lip nasal deformities. The advantages of harvesting the 10th rib cartilage and our long-term results demonstrating ease of harvest, stability, and predicable outcomes are with several clinical cases. The senior author has used the 10th rib graft successfully in a variety of challenging secondary cleft rhinoplasty procedures wi...
