This technology is now being used in a multitude of academic and community centers throughout the country and is being incorporated into the treatment of cancers in almost every anatomical site, most commonly head and neck cancer, central nervous system tumors, and prostate cancer. In addition, current protocols are investigating the use of IMRT for the treatment of breast cancer, lung cancer, abdominal/retroperitoneal malignancies, and gynecological diseases. This article presents a brief technical review of IMRT and addresses specific clinical concerns and caveats that radiation oncologists should be aware of when utilizing this technology.

Technical developments in radiotherapy (RT) have created a need for systematic quality assurance ... more Technical developments in radiotherapy (RT) have created a need for systematic quality assurance (QA) to ensure that clinical institutions deliver prescribed radiation doses consistent with the requirements of clinical protocols. For QA, an ideal dose verification system should be independent of the treatment-planning system (TPS). This paper describes the development and reproducibility evaluation of a Monte Carlo (MC)-based standard LINAC model as a preliminary requirement for independent verification of dose distributions. The BEAMnrc MC code is used for characterization of the 6-, 10- and 15-MV photon beams for a wide range of field sizes. The modeling of the LINAC head components is based on the specifications provided by the manufacturer. MC dose distributions are tuned to match Varian Golden Beam Data (GBD). For reproducibility evaluation, calculated beam data is compared with beam data measured at individual institutions. For all energies and field sizes, the MC and GBD agre...

We employ Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof (PBE)–generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for accomplishment of our study and we assume various Eu concentrations (3.12%, 6.25% and 9.37%) for doping into host CdS lattice. We substitute Cd atoms with Eu atoms while supercell size is kept fixed ([Formula: see text]. We present a detailed comparison among optical properties of pure CdS and various Eu concentrations. Partial density of states (PDOS) plots reveal hybridization among Cd [Formula: see text]-states, S [Formula: see text]-states and Eu [Formula: see text]-states and because of it, material (CdS:Eu) shows exceptional energy transfer which influences optical spectra and electronic properties. A considerable change in absorption spectra is noted, where in comparison to pure CdS, absorption shows blueshift with increasing Eu concentrations. Our DFT results...
