Saliva has been described as the mirror of the body and indeed as a mirror of our blood as these biofluids and their molecular components share many similarities. As a diagnostic fluid, saliva offers distinctive advantages over serum including the simple and non-invasive method of collection and its easy, low-cost storage. So, this review examines the diagnostic application of saliva for hereditary disorders, autoimmune diseases, malignancies, infectious diseases and endocrine disorders, as well as in the assessment of therapeutic levels of drugs and the monitoring of illicit drug use. This paper explores what saliva can reveal about general health, drawing examples from recent research on salivary biomarkers of systemic illness and highlighting the current use and potential clinical and research applications, of diagnostics based on oral fluids.

They are relatively rare in the oral cavity with a rate of 1/5000 individuals. The buccal mucosa, tongue, and floor of the mouth are among the common locations. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice. The fibrolipoma is an unusual histologic variant of lipoma that is comprised of neoplastic fat cells embedded in condensed collegen tissue. Clinicians should be aware of these lesions in order to develop better clinical differential diagnoses. This is a report of a rare case of an oral fibrolipoma in an unusual location in the lower labial oral mucosa. The biological characteristics of the lesion are described.

It is a tumor-like proliferation to a non specific infection. It is non-neoplastic in nature and presents in different clinical and histological forms. In appearance, they are typically solitary and vascular usually seen in the oral cavity. It is an oral disease which appears in the mouth as an overgrowth of tissue in response to irritation, physical trauma or hormonal factors. The name for pyogenic granuloma is misnomer because of the fact that it is not a true granuloma. Skin of the face and neck, upper and lower extremities, and mucous membranes of nose and eyelids are common areas for extraoral involvement. The clinical diagnosis of extraoral variant of this lesion being an uncommon occurrence can be quite challenging and misleading as they sometimes may mimic more serious lesions. The purpose of this article is to report an unusual case of pyogenic granuloma occurring on lower lip.

Research paper thumbnail of A Study on Duration of Effect of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation Therapy on Whole Saliva Flow

Salivary gland hypofunction or hyposalivation is the condition of having reduced saliva production which leads to the subjective complaint of oral dryness termed xerostomia.7 Management of xerostomia includes palliative therapy using topical agents or systemic therapy. Electrostimulation to produce saliva was studied in the past and showed moderate promise but never became part of mainstream therapy. Hence, this study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) on whole salivary flow rate in healthy adults and to evaluate how long this effect of TENS lasts on salivary flow. Materials and methods One hundred healthy adult subjects were divided into five age groups with each group containing 20 subjects equally divided into males and females in each group. Unstimulated saliva was collected using a graduated test tube fitted with funne...
