It may not be possible to lead a satisfying life under the overwhelming burden of social facts. As individuals want to be alienated or distanced from the painful effects of social experiences and realities, they resort to the hypnotizing influence of dreams that alleviate their individual and social problems. In Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra's Don Quixote and Yaşar Kemal's Iron Earth, Copper Sky and The Undying Grass, it is possible to witness how imagination shapes human behaviour and subverts social taboos. The creation of another imaginary world by the characters reflects a desire to escape from the delayed confrontation with unwanted social Öz

The great social and cultural changes in the Victorian period had a great impact on gender roles.... more The great social and cultural changes in the Victorian period had a great impact on gender roles. In both public and private sphere, the divisions in gender roles started to disappear with the emergence of a type of woman willing to be active in every area of life. Along with more frequent appearance and growing numbers of women in the work force through the late nineteenth century Elaine Showalter’s notion of “sexual anarchy” and its different forms were invigorated. How the social status of women started to change along with industrialization by the end of the nineteenth-century was also reflected upon Victorian literature. For instance, in Mrs Warren’s Profession the protagonist Vivie represents the new woman type who is ambitious to get education and to participate in work life as a self-sufficient woman in Victorian drama. When compared with the traditional woman type, she is more free-minded, independent and career-oriented. In D. H. Lawrence’ The Rainbow, Ursula, is another s...

The Victorian Empire experienced lots of major changes that affected living standards profoundly ... more The Victorian Empire experienced lots of major changes that affected living standards profoundly in different stages of Victorian period. Victorian society bore witness to major penetrating changes at an unprecedented pace, which affected the social, economic, political and educational structure profoundly. It was inevitable that economic progress and industrialization led to population growth in urban life, with the urbanization of rural areas, the intensification of the growth of towns, the coming of the railways, better sanitation, higher living standards, while at the same time the Industrial Revolution created a gap between employers and workers during this mechanization process. These groundbreaking changes naturally transgressed the stereotypical gender roles, by making middle-class women pursue more social rights and independence in both education and work sphere and by attacking the patriarchal structure of the society that condemns women to domestic imprisonment. The aim of the present paper is to demonstrate the changes in the quality of life in Victorian Empire, mainly depending upon social, industrial, economic, gender and demographic issues and question whether these changes produced better or worse living conditions during the years between 1837 and 1901.

The spirit of democratization and the dream of a better society and order triggered all these movements. The nineteenth-century British political and social thought has a deep influence on these central ideas of government in the light of industrial changes, their revolutionary consequences and democratic movements and thanks to the works of the representatives of these ideologies. Both Industrial Revolution and democratization are two significant developments that shaped the rise of these ideologies together with capitalist policies and rise of the British Empire. Radical changes and revolutions in British history deeply affect the role of the individual in the society and the role of government by forcing them to inevitable changes in their policies and roles. With the rise of industrial revolution and democratization (toget...

Halide Edib Adivar, who sincerely tells about our war of independence and her comrades with whom she fought shoulder to shoulder in this struggle, reveals the Flame Shirt of the War of Independence in all its vividness with his novel Shirt of Flame. Ayse, which has become the symbol of Izmir and its liberation, becomes a shirt of flame for Ihsan and Peyami, who are increasingly attached to her. Both of them swore to die by following the Izmir girl on the way to Izmir. Ihsan, fighting with the enemy and his own emotions on the one hand, falls a martyr at the front. Filled with the consciousness of Turkishness and the determination to fight, Ayse joins the national struggle as a nurse and inspires the young people of Istanbul. Women are ready and able to fight for t...

During her sojourn in Ottoman Istanbul, she noted down significant details as regards the Constantinople and seraglio through her vivid descriptions as a liberated woman in her Embassy Letters. Another significant oriental work, Letters from Turkey by Kelemen Mikes (1690-1761), who was a Transylvanian-born Hungarian writer and political figure, is centered upon Mikes’s life in exile between the years 1717 and 1758 within the boundaries of the Ottoman Empire. In Letters from Turkey, we can feel his strong sense of Hungarian identity and his steadiness in maintaining his cultural and religious customs and values in his elaboration of his own and the “other” culture, while his praising the benign and merciful ruling style of Ottoman Sultans offers a different view of orientalism in favour of the “other” culture (Ottoman Empire). Therefore, the pu...
