Pakhtun tribes, a patriarchal and paternalistic society, practising tribal customs (Riwaj/Dastoor), inhabit this borderland. Owing to these tribal customs, the tribal Pakhtun society treats women much like property of their men. This essay focuses on how a tribal woman is socially discriminated by denying her certain fundamental rights. I discuss six tribal customs, by giving examples based on my field work, through which tribal women are treated as personal property by her male kin-father, brother, uncle or husband. These customs include shamilaat (denial of the right to inheritance in shared family's and tribe's property), miratah (declaring a woman as issueless in the absence of a male kin and thereby denying her property), rasnama/valver/khawara (bride-money), ghairat/nang (honour and pride), badala/swara (barter, as in getting father or brother a bride or as in exchange for settlement of dispute) and ghag (pronouncing the desire to marry a specific woman or in some cases to spite a family).

Every country views war under the lens of factors such as its geography, threats from neighbouring countries, internal circumstances and economic standing. This article discusses and highlights the quest for modern conventional warfare advancement generally, and particularly in the context of two South Asian nuclear armed nations – India and Pakistan, two arch-rivals. Both nations have been trying since their independence to gain an edge over the other in terms of defence, and so have invested more than they should in the defence sector for various reasons. The article presents the relevance of conventional warfare in the Indo–Pak context and sheds light on the strategic context of South Asia which hosts two nuclear-armed rivals. It discusses the historical and near-contemporary use of conventional warfare by both n...

It argues and justifies that competing and rival groups in the present international system are forcing states to build new alliances. Hence, Pakistan’s new collaborative strategy of allying itself with Russia is due to several political and economic developments amongst its immediate neighbors in the region. While Russia, a former super power is trying to revive its role in the region is also looking for new partners with converging interests to deal with its security issues at home. Both states can benefit from the new partnership if they properly use their strength and capabilities in the region. The article also argues that how certain changes are forcing both Pakistan and Russia to revisit their foreign policies, thus indicating a beginning of the “New Cold War” in the South Asia.

There are seventeen agreements of WTO that deals with issues related to trade and commerce. The Agreement on Agriculture offers obligations for member states in the area of market access, tariff regulations, export competition, domestic support, export subsidies, food security, and environmental protection. If agreements such as Agreement on Agriculture, General Agreement on Trade and Services, Trade Policy Review Mechanism and Social Clause are extended without adjustment to the needs of poor nations and sub-nations living on the peripheries, then it may prove detrimental to their survival. To substantiate my argument, I have briefly discussed the adverse affects and recorded protests against such agreements by the poor indigenous people living across the world’s ...

Today's FATA, Pak Afghan border areas played a very important role since British colonial times, used as a buffer zone between Russian Czars and Great Britain during their "Great Game" both imperialist colonial powers were preserving their prosperous territories. Later tribal areas were again used in a "Cold War" converted to "Hot War" between two super powers in Afghanistan in 1979. Proxy war was fought on the expense of tribal people and their lands. After dismemberment of USSR, with no cold war or hot war, FATA already trained, prepared and used in a ten years long war was converted into a training ground for Jihadis/militants to fight inside and outside the state. In this capitalist and communist war, narratives are constructed about tribal people and culture (jihadi, warring and militant) that even toda...

It also charts policies of WTO that not only grant supremacy to trade and commercial interests over values such as human rights, labor rights but also discriminates domestic trade in least developed states such as Afghanistan. It illustrates that every global economic agency may not aim at bringing prosperity and alleviates poverty, in Afghanistan. The formation of WTO has changed the approach of the world community, both in the (developed) North as well as in the (developing) South towards trade and commerce. Ironically many states of the South became members of WTO without fully appreciating and understanding its agenda. Some of the developing states have undergone numerous economic changes: some states, such as China, became huge exporters; others, such as India and Brazil began encouraging foreign investment and multinationals. Therefore, participation in WT...

It is always a challenge for the students of International Relations and Political Economy to find and study scholarly work on subject related to trade and economy. This paper will assist the students and researchers to study classic work on the important subject such as World Trade Organization. It also provided some knowledge on the agreements and policies of the WTO. In the paper, I have discussed three schools of thoughts; the globalists, advocating for integrating the world through WTO, the anti-globalists, which are against WTO and the reformists, advocating for reforms in the economic system and trade organisation to accommodate the needs of developing and least developed states.

It is also observed that through different trade organizations and regional arrangements, trade and commerce is used an effective tool in the peace building (interdependence) amongst several states 1 . This paper briefly discusses economic interdependence (trade and commercial relations) linking it with peace building. This study advocate the prudence of liberalization of trade among Pakistan, Afghanistan and India without affecting their economic interests, develop economic interdependence and resolve political issues through dialogue. It argues that through trade, the conflicting interests of Afghanistan, Pakistan and India will coincide and thus will bring peace and security in the region. While discussing trade, it covers briefly formal (regular and recorded trade) and informal trade relations among Pakistan, Afghanistan and India. It also discuss...

It is based in extensive ethnographic fieldwork in the valley. The article investigates how women got involved in colluding with the Taliban when they took over the valley. Focusing on the class structure of the semi-tribal society of Swat Pushtuns, especially the segregation between men and women, the article suggests the Taliban exploited the long-built tension between the poor landless class and the rich landed class to convince the women of the former to collude with them with the promise of ameliorating their condition.

She focuses on the gender-aspect of the concept of citizenship, especially in the context of Indian democracy. She juxtaposes the high claims of democracy of the Indian state with the local realities of culture, religion, and caste system. Beginning with a cold-blooded incident of rape of a young woman traveling on a local bus, Behl employs the ethnographic methodological approach to demonstrate the lived experiences, meaning-making processes, and self-reflexivity of women in the public spheres of the country.

For this purpose they also engaged local elites and customs. The administrative-judicial system introduced on the Northwestern border was different from the criminal and civil laws introduced elsewhere in British India. In 1947, when British colonial governance ended and the tribal areas became part of Pakistan, the oppressive colonial system of the Frontier Crimes Regulation (FCR) continued. It is still in force to the present day. In this article, I discuss the control structure of the administrative-judicial system that was imposed through these crime regulations in the FATA. I argue that these regulations are against fundamental rights prescribed in Pakistan’s Constitution of 1973 and the UN Human Rights Charter. I also highlight the plight of tribal people suffering politically, socially, and economically due to...

Researching Borderland (FATA): Indigenous Methodology of Exploring Knowledge Introduction In a... more Researching Borderland (FATA): Indigenous Methodology of Exploring Knowledge
Introduction
In academia and research studies, indigenous and native methodology is the alternative option that assists in exploring knowledge based on ethnographic/ anthropological or any other study pertaining to specific perceptions and attitudes in certain area. Native or local methods of researching different Indigenous communities vary but their reservations against the western research converge, especially of those colonized or militarized. The major argument given is that there is a difference between a research done within an indigenous context using western methodologies and research done using indigenous methodologies, which integrates indigenous voices. Pakistan’s borderland (present day FATA) colonized and now militarized, is nowadays an area that is given special attention in academic world due certain political and economic reasons. Although, some knowledge that evolved over last one century is of two types; one is colonial, researched and recorded during British period and other is post-colonial, militarized but heavily referred from colonial records. Ironically, maximum of investigation in post-colonial is linked to European imperialism and colonialism, thus concealing the local knowledge in the academia. Although, we do see some or little indigenous work now, however that seldom gets acknowledgment in the western scholarship.
