Results are based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb −1 of proton-proton collisions at √ s = 7 TeV, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. In order to discriminate between signal and background events, kinematic and topological quantities, including the angular spin correlations of the decay products, are employed. Events are further classified according to the probability of the jets to originate from quarks of light or heavy flavor or from gluons. No evidence for the Higgs boson is found, and upper limits on its production cross section are determined for a Higgs boson of mass between 130 and 600 GeV.

In 264 HCC was associated with cirrhosis: HCV-related in 130 (49%), HBV in 54 (20.5%), HCV+HBV+HDV in 29 (11%), alcohol-related in 31 (11.7%) and cryptogenic in 17 (6.4%). At listing 52 (20.7%) patients were classified as T1, 174 (69.3%) as T2 and 25 (10%) as T3. Corresponding median unadjusted MELD scores were 13 (range 6−27), 11 (6−32) and 10 (6−24). At transplant 55 (20.7%) were classified as T1, 176 (66.2%) as T2 and 22 (8.3%) as T3. Corresponding unadjusted MELD scores were 12 (6−31), 11 (6−40) and 12 (6−22). Median HCC-adjusted MELD was 22 (6−40, T1), 22 (6−40, T2) and 22 (7−40, T3). Median waiting time before transplant was 4.5 months (0−40) in HCC-T1, 4 (0−55) in T2, 3 (0−32) in T3, and 20 months (1−71) in HCC found incidentally. Down-staging was performed in 17 (33%) HCC-T1, 74 (42%) HCC-T2 and 15 (60%) HCC. Age of donors grafted to patients with or without HCC was 57 (16−97) vs 54 (12−86) years; cold-ischemia time was 7.2 (2.6−16) and 7.6 (2.6−15); and donors deceased for trauma were 24.8% and 29.3%, respectively (n.s). Conclusion: Patients transplanted for HCC in Italy are receiving high priority regardless of HCC-stage and severity of underlying liver disease and are given grafts of average quality. Most receive down-staging procedures while waiting. These findings may be helpful at the national level to implement the current allocation policy. * Liver Match investigators: AISF and CNT governing boards, Directors of Italian Liver Transplant Programs and AISF fellowship recipients. Diverticular perforation into an adjacent organ can be followed by fistula formation. We report the case of a patient referred to our hospital with sigmoid diverticulitis and fecal peritonitis, which subsequently developed a complex fistula, as well as left hip septic arthritis.A 41-year-old male patient was transferred to our hospital after an acute episode of purulent sigmoid diverticulitis 2 months before; a transverse colostomy and drainage were performed. The patient was transferred due to a painful left lower extremity deformity and recurrent urinary tract infections despite antibiotic during the last 6 weeks. He showed physical signs of malnutrition, a left lower extremity flexion and adduction deformity, very limited hip motion due to pain and thigh muscular contracture, a fistulous sinus in the left lower quadrant wit ...

The effect of the addition of an alkane co-solvent during the reflux stage of the preparation was investigated. The addition of C 4 -C 16 n-alkanes was observed to affect the structure of the vanadium phosphate products significantly. Without the alkane the product is VOHPO 4 0.5H2Owhichistheprecursortotheindustrialcatalyst.AdditionofthealkaneleadstotheformationofVO(H2PO4)2,withitscharacteristicblock−shapedcrystallites,andthealkane/alcoholliquidphasesolubilisestheexcessvanadium.Theamountofalkanerequiredtoinducethesechangesdecreasedwithincreasingcarbonnumberofthen−alkane.Theeffectoftheadditionofthealkaneco−solventisthoughttoeffecttherateofreductionofV5+toV4+whichthenreactswithphosphoricacidtogiveeitherVOHPO40.5H 2 O which is the precursor to the industrial catalyst. Addition of the alkane leads to the formation of VO(H 2 PO 4 ) 2 , with its characteristic block-shaped crystallites, and the alkane/alcohol liquid phase solubilises the excess vanadium. The amount of alkane required to induce these changes decreased with increasing carbon number of the n-alkane. The effect of the addition of the alkane co-solvent is thought to effect the rate of reduction of V 5+ to V 4+ which then reacts with phosphoric acid to give either VOHPO 4 0.5H2Owhichistheprecursortotheindustrialcatalyst.AdditionofthealkaneleadstotheformationofVO(H2PO4)2,withitscharacteristicblockshapedcrystallites,andthealkane/alcoholliquidphasesolubilisestheexcessvanadium.Theamountofalkanerequiredtoinducethesechangesdecreasedwithincreasingcarbonnumberofthenalkane.TheeffectoftheadditionofthealkanecosolventisthoughttoeffecttherateofreductionofV5+toV4+whichthenreactswithphosphoricacidtogiveeitherVOHPO40.5H 2 O or VO(H 2 PO 4 ) 2 . If the reduction step is fast then the local P : V 4+ ratio is approximately 1 and VOHPO 4 $0.5H 2 O is the major product. However, if the reduction step is slow then the local P : V 4+ ratio is much higher and VO(H 2 PO 4 ) 2 is preferentially formed.

The signal is observed in the form of an enhancement of pairs of same-sign charged particles with small relative four-momentum. The size of the correlated particle emission region is seen to increase significantly with the particle multiplicity of the event.

Events with high jet multiplicity and a large scalar sum of jet transverse momenta are analyzed. The number of expected standard model background events is found to be in good agreement with the observed events. Limits are set on a model describing the production of R-parity-violating supersymmetric gluino pairs, and gluino masses in the range of 200 to 280 GeV/c 2 are excluded at a 95% confidence level for the first time.

Physics Letters B, 2010

We present a measurement of the ratio of positive to negative muon fluxes from cosmic ray interac... more We present a measurement of the ratio of positive to negative muon fluxes from cosmic ray interactions in the atmosphere, using data collected by the CMS detector both at ground level and in the underground experimental cavern at the CERN LHC. Muons were detected in the momentum range from 5 GeV/c to 1 TeV/c. The surface flux ratio is measured to be 1.2766 ± 0.0032 (stat.) ± 0.0032 (syst.), independent of the muon momentum, below 100 GeV/c. This is the most precise measurement to date. At higher momenta the data are consistent with an increase of the charge ratio, in agreement with cosmic ray shower models and compatible with previous measurements by deep-underground experiments.

A search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two Z bosons with subsequent decay into... more A search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two Z bosons with subsequent decay into a final state containing two quark jets and two leptons, H → ZZ ( * ) → qq − + is presented.

Research paper thumbnail of Measurement of the charge ratio of atmospheric muons with the CMS detector
