Research paper thumbnail of The Era of New Media Technologies and the Challenges of Media Relations Practice in Nigeria

Journal of Communication, 2010

This study examines the fundamentals of Media Relations, an important aspect of Public Relations,... more This study examines the fundamentals of Media Relations, an important aspect of Public Relations, which help to maintain credibility and mutual relationship with the various media of communication in Nigeria in the era of new media technologies. It provided the opportunity to qualitatively ascertain the import of new media technologies in the practice of media relations in Nigeria; establish the various contemporary tools for media relations and to determine the appropriate strategies of media relations. The revelations uphold the claim that new media technologies like the internet, mobile phones, videoconferencing among others which now overlap with the different media of communication due to technological innovations and convergence, have transformed media relations practice globally despite the various factors such as cyber crisis, low level of technology penetration, poor funding among others posing as challenges to effective media relations practice in Nigeria. Thus, the paper supports the theoretical perspective of development media theory and technological determinism theory. A clarion call was therefore put forward to all those directly or indirectly involved in the practice of media relations in Nigeria to merge resources together or separately and be actively involved in ensuring that the transformations brought about by new media technologies in media relations are explored and the entire benefits completely exploited by all the stakeholders in this regard.

The sample consisted of 600 youth; however, 583 validly participated in the study. The participants were equitably selected in six States in Nigeria that represented the six geo-political zones of the country. The multi-stage sampling technique was employed to evenly select the youth from the major cities/towns in the States. Data generated were analysed and presented through descriptive and inferential statistics using SPSS version 20 software. Results show that the youth accepted entertainment news stories more than any other type of news stories on social media platforms. The majority of the youth considered Twitter as the most acceptable social media platform for receiving news stories in Nigeria. Findings also revealed that despite their love to read news stories on social media platforms, the youth's level of acceptance of it was low. Furthermore, the age and gender of the youth were found to directly influence their level of acceptance of news stories on social media platforms. The study concluded that the multi-dimensional interplay that characterised the low level of acceptance of news stories on social media platforms among the youth in Nigeria does not portend ominous signs.

It explores the MDGs so as to unravel the ways ICTs and indigenous languages can facilitate the speedy actualization of MDGs in Nigeria, a country with peculiar cultural heritage and with over 750 indigenous languages. It also analyzes some of the contending constraints confronting Nigeria from actualizing MDGs such as corruption, extreme poverty, lack of attention to indigenous languages, high cost of ICTs which are products of bad leadership. The effective use of Nigeria’s different indigenous languages and ICTs, it maintains, remains the most effective way towards educating Nigerians and achieving the MDGs in Nigeria come 2015.

Thus, it analyzes the New World Information and Communication Order (NWICO) debate, the major stakes in international communication such as globalization, media/cultural imperialism and news flow imbalance etc. It argues that using new media technologies in international communication is capable of removing the barrier of distance and time, reduce news flow imbalance, promote international relations and positively enhance globalization. Therefore, as a way of downplaying some of the contending issues in international communication in the era of new media technologies in Nigeria such as mental imperialism, western grip of international news agencies, loss of cultural values and bad leadership among others; there is need for Nigeria as a developing country to fashion out ways of contributing economically, socially, culturally and technologically to the world at large. Moreover, this would enhance the recognition and relevance of Nigeria in international communication in the era of new media technologies.

Research paper thumbnail of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and Sustainable Development in Africa: Mainstreaming the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) into Nigeria’s Development Agenda

Journal of Social Sciences, 2010

The researcher used survey design to collect data from 300 respondents with the aid of a 13-item questionnaire. The respondents comprised of 200 academic staff and 100 postgraduate students purposively selected from Delta State University and University of Lagos in Nigeria. The findings reveal that there is a high level of awareness of MDGs in Nigeria; the MDGs can be mainstreamed into Nigeria's development agenda and that ICTs are veritable tools for sustainable development in Africa. Thus, the author calls on African leaders to formulate and implement policies that would enhance the deployment and development of ICTs in Africa with the aim of bridging the digital divide in a bid to actualize sustainable development in Africa while incorporating the MDGs into their development agendas.
