Background: A relevant component to achieve high quality of care is the implementation of evidenc... more Background: A relevant component to achieve high quality of care is the implementation of evidence based practices. Objective: To assess in two maternities in the South of Chile, the use of evidence based practices in labour and delivery care. Patients and methods: In two hospitals, 205 women after delivery were interviewed. Eleven forms of care were selected from the classification provided by the WHO Reproductive Health Library, four as beneficial forms of care and seven as forms of care likely to be harmful. Results: Beneficial forms of care were used between 17 to 46% and forms likely to be harmful between 17 and 98%. No association among the use of the practices and some maternal characteristics, such as age, parity and years on school, were found. Women interpretation about benefits of the practices is not in agreement with the evidence provided by the trials. Conclusions: A low adherence to evidence based practices was observed since some practices of proven benefit are poorly used and many practices likely to be harmful are highly used. There is a need to look for strategies aimed at the better use of evidences based practices considering among these strategies women empowerment.

Summary Root water uptake is a key ecohydrological process for which a physically based understan... more Summary Root water uptake is a key ecohydrological process for which a physically based understanding has been developed in the past decades. However, due to methodological constraints, knowledge gaps remain about the plastic response of whole plant root systems to a rapidly changing environment. We designed a laboratory system for nondestructive monitoring of stable isotopic composition in plant transpiration of a herbaceous species (Centaurea jacea) and of soil water across depths, taking advantage of newly developed in situ methods. Daily root water uptake profiles were obtained using a statistical Bayesian multisource mixing model. Fast shifts in the isotopic composition of both soil and transpiration water could be observed with the setup and translated into dynamic and pronounced shifts of the root water uptake profile, even in well watered conditions. The incorporation of plant physiological and soil physical information into statistical modelling improved the model output. A simple exercise of water balance closure underlined the nonunique relationship between root water uptake profile on the one hand, and water content and root distribution profiles on the other, illustrating the continuous adaption of the plant water uptake as a function of its root hydraulic architecture and soil water availability during the experiment.

Methods Transpiration rate, CO2 assimilation rate, leaf water potential, instantaneous and intrinsic water use efficiency, temperature, relative humidity, vapor pressure deficit and soil water content in one plant and root length density in four plants, all grown in custom-made columns, were monitored daily for 87 days in the lab. The soil water isotopic composition in eleven depths was recorded daily in a non-destructive manner. The isotopic composition of plant transpiration was inferred from gas chamber measurements. Vertical isotopic gradients in the soil column were created by adding labeled water. <p>Traditional destructive plant and soil water isotopic monitoring has pro... more <p>Traditional destructive plant and soil water isotopic monitoring has provided important insights into root water uptake changes in drought and evapotranspiration partitioning across scales. Recently, non-destructive isotopic monitoring coupled with laser-based spectroscopy allow a better understanding of these and other questions with a higher spatial and temporal resolution. We investigated the changes in root water uptake profiles and eco-physiological characteristics (e.g. stomatal conductance, leaf water potential) of the grassland species <em>Centaurea jacea</em> under varying environmental conditions (i.e. atmospheric demand, soil water availability) with a labeling experiment in fully-controlled laboratory conditions. We measured non-destructively the isotopic composition of soil water and of plant transpiration. With these measurements, daily root water uptake profiles were obtained using a multi-source mixing model embedded in a Bayesian statistical framework. We analyzed the daily changes of these profiles together with changes in environmental conditions and plant physiology-related variables to discover potential adaptation strategies of <em>C. jacea</em> to water scarcity. Even in a dry soil (~ 10% soil water content), the studied grassland species was able to sustain high transpiration rates. This was accompanied by a very negative leaf water potential (~-3 MPa). Root water uptake profiles in both dry and wet conditions were very similar: root water uptake was highest in the soil layer 0-15 cm (up to 87%) and second highest (up to 40%) in the soil layer 45-60 cm. Before soil water content dropped below 12%, transpiration rate was mainly controlled by vapor pressure deficit. After this, a reduction of canopy conductance restricted gas leaf exchange. Instantaneous water use efficiency dropped when the soil was very dry, but intrinsic water use efficiency was maintained. Our comprehensive data set of plant-related and environmental variables allowed us to investigate at a 1-cm and daily scales the plant’s response to varying hydro-climatic conditions.</p>

Background The outcome of infants with KMT2A-germline ALL is much better than of infants with KMT... more Background The outcome of infants with KMT2A-germline ALL is much better than of infants with KMT2A-rearranged ALL, but still worse than of non-infant ALL patients. Here, we describe the outcome and prognostic factors for infants with KMT2A-germline ALL treated on Interfant-06 protocol. Methods 167 infants with KMT2A-germline ALL were enrolled in Interfant-06. Univariate analysis on prognostic factors (age, WBC at diagnosis, prednisolone response and CD10 expression) was performed on KMT2A-germline infants in complete remission at the end of induction (EOI) (n=163). Bone marrow minimal residual disease (MRD) was measured in 73 patients, by real-time quantitative PCR of immunoglobulin genes and/or T-cell receptor genes, at various time points (EOI, n= 68, end of consolidation (EOC) n= 56, and before OCTADAD (n=57)). Este texto apresenta reflexões emersas da análise das ações de um projeto de internacionalização ... more Este texto apresenta reflexões emersas da análise das ações de um projeto de internacionalização desenvolvido em parceria entre duas instituições de ensino superior de dois países latino-americanos: Brasil e Chile, entre 2018 e 2019. Tanto as proposições quanto as discussões apresentadas tomaram como fundamento os princípios da educação patrimonial contemporânea e a ideia de internacionalização proposta por Kertz-Welzel (2018). Como resultado, a análise das ações permite dizer que a internacionalização, quando parte de planejamento colaborativo e integrado com as comunidades participantes, se consolida num processo educativo de construção, identificação e valorização de patrimônios que rompem fronteiras, visando à construção de comunidades de práticas artísticas culturalmente sensíveis e mundialmente conectadas.

L’edicio 2007 de l’Informe Quiral analitza els 12.048 textos sobre salut i medicina que van ser p... more L’edicio 2007 de l’Informe Quiral analitza els 12.048 textos sobre salut i medicina que van ser publicats durant l’any 2007 en els cinc diaris analitzats. Els resultats es mostren consistents amb les principals observacions d’ edicions anteriors sobre el desenvolupament de la cobertura periodistica en els temes de salut. Les dades projecten un notable augment respecte els dos ultims anys, degut, en part, a la consolidacio o al naixement d’espais dedicats especificament a la salut, com per exemple els suplements. Aquest any 2007, s’analitzen en detall quatre casos per la seva singularitat: el debat sorgit davant la denuncia de cliniques en les que es practicava l’avortament de forma il•legal; els limits en tecniques de comunicacio per sensibilitzar la poblacio davant un tema de salut (exemplificats pel polemic anunci exhibit pels carrers italians en el qual es mostrava la imatge demacrada d’una dona anorectica, i un escandalos programa holandes que oferia com a premi un trasplantament de ronyo) i la repercussio de dues vacunes –la de la malaria i la del virus del papil•loma huma (tambe denominada “vacuna del cancer de cervix”)-, el diferent abast de les quals serveix per il•lustrar la complexitat de les accions i les decisions en l’ambit de la prevencio de la salut.
