In this paper, we focus on optimizing handover decisions based not only on the signal quality, but also on the knowledge about the context of mobile devices and networks. Since context information and context processing evolves fast, we propose a flexible, integrated approach for context management, which can adapt in several ways. Our architecture encompasses active platforms in network nodes and mobile devices, distributed context management components on these platforms, and service deployment for network services. This flexible architecture is able to actively deploy different handover services. It can manage different kinds of context information and allow mobile devices to be always connected to the most suitable access network. Our architecture is validated in a prototype implementation.

Research paper thumbnail of How to increase the efficiency of receiver-driven adaptive mechanisms in a new generation of IP networks

Computer Communications, Mar 1, 2004

Receiver-driven adaptation allows streaming of multicast multimedia content to different receiver... more Receiver-driven adaptation allows streaming of multicast multimedia content to different receivers across networks with heterogeneous characteristics, such as different resource availability. However, receivers are only encouraged to adapt if network providers guarantee a fair distribution of bandwidth and also the punishment of receivers that do not adjust their rate in case of congestion. Therefore, we define a receiver-driven adaptive mechanism based on a new fairness protocol that provides the required guarantees for adaptation in ...

Research paper thumbnail of Mobility management for multi-user sessions in next generation wireless systems

Computer communications, Mar 25, 2008

Mobility management and ubiquitous access for real-time multi-user sessions with Quality of Servi... more Mobility management and ubiquitous access for real-time multi-user sessions with Quality of Service (QoS) support are major requirements to the success of next generation wireless systems. In this context, Multi-User Session Control (MUSC) is proposed to allow fixed and mobile users to access multi-user sessions ubiquitously, while providing QoS mapping, QoS adaptation and connectivity control in heterogeneous environments with mobile receivers and static senders. By interacting with resource allocation controllers, MUSC allows the ...

There is a consensus that an efficient and scalable provisioning of network resources is crucial for the success of the NGN, mainly in what concerns access networks. Previous solutions for the control of multi-user sessions rely ...

Moreover, mobile communications are expected to expand from telephony to publish-subscribe services, such as real-time multimedia. With this goal, the University of Coimbra is working with DoCoMo Euro-Labs on a unifying control architecture for multimedia publish-subscribe services over an IP-based mobile system, where our proposal aims to control the quality of ...
