There is a large disparity in access to care for cancer patients in view of increasing case number, limited and urban centric cancer care facilities and resource intensive management of cancer along with many other sociodemographic factors. Cancer care delivery is facing many operational challenges at different steps of care globally and it is more pronounced in LMICs. Research directed towards Operations Management (OM) research can provide solutions to many of the challenges encountered during different steps of cancer care and can help us to manage cancer care delivery landscape with cost cutting and quality improvement. The promising abilities of OM is often overlooked for improving various aspects of cancer care despite the fact that its deployment can create OM surplus where the capitals can be tapped to improve the quality of care for the cancer patients. This paper discusses that fundamentals of OM principles must be implemented for creating resilience and gaining effectiveness and efficiency throughout the cancer care operations.

To resolve this, innovative and smart ways are required that are not only cost-effective but also environmentally savvy. Moreover, the production processes are also prone to various imperfections, and thus the production of defectives is quite pragmatic. The handling of such defective products varies from industry to industry and type of products. The present study constructs an inventory model to handle the defective products via a proficient rework strategy that makes the product fit to be sold at the primary price. Here, the demand for the product is assumed to be dependent on the selling price and advertisements. The model also considers the energy usage during the production and the cost of carbon emissions while optimizing the production batch size and selling price. Optimality is proved graphically by using the software Mathematica 11.3.0. A compr...

In today’s world of cooperative decision-making, individual decisions in order to reduce inventory costs may not lead to an overall optimal solution. Coordination is necessary among participants of supply chain to achieve better performance. There are legitimate and important efforts from the vendor to enhance the relation with buyer; one such effort is offering trade credit which has been a driver of growth and development of business between them. The cost of financing is a core consideration in effective financial management, in general and in context of business. Also, due to imperfect production a vendor may produce defective items which results in shortages. Motivated with these aspects, an integrated vendor-buyer inventory model is developed for imperfect quality items with allowable shortages; in which the vendor offers credit period to the buyer for payment. The objective is to minimize the total joint annual co...

However, these defective items can be removed from the lot through a screening process. Thus, the inspection of lot becomes essential, especially when items are deteriorating in nature. Further, in today's uncertain global economy, due to rising inflation there is a consequent decline in the real value of money, which eventually forces the supplier to provide an attractive tradecredit policy to the retailer. Keeping this scenario in mind, an attempt has been made to formulate an inventory policy for a retailer dealing with imperfect quality items of deteriorating nature under inflation and permissible delay in payments. Results have been demonstrated with the help of a numerical example and sensitivity analysis is also presented to provide managerial insights into practice.

Also, warranty policy is extensively used world-wide to increase customer confidence in the product and to uplift sales. On account of this, the present chapter presents a problem of a manufacturer dealing with an imperfect production system considering maintenance actions and warranty policy by trading off the rework cost, holding cost, warranty cost and corrective/preventive maintenance cost so as to minimize the manufacturer's total cost. Numerical analysis and sensitivity analysis is performed to showcase model features.

The situation is even more subtle when the items are prone to deterioration. However, an inspection process can spare us from such a criticality by bifurcating the defectives from the good quality lot. Thus, a screening process is mandatory. In the hyper-competitive market, trade-credit is well-known gimmick in order to boost the sales. Keeping in view, an inventory scenario of a retailer is investigated who has to deal with imperfect and “deteriorating items” under “permissible delay in payments”. The demand is assumed to be increasing exponentially. Shortages are permitted to occur and supposed to be “partially backlogged.” Rate of backlogging is assumed to have inverse relation with the waiting time for the subsequent replenishment. In this chapter, shortage point and length of cycle are jointly optimized. Numerical analysis and s...

The illness triggered by the novel coronavirus is named as COVID-19. It is pre-fixed with the word “novel” because it comes under the new strain of the virus that has not been reported before. This virus outbreak has disrupted human life in the most petrifying way worldwide. The present study aims to analyse the work done in this field through a state-of-the-art review of articles based on COVID-19 and discuss the current trends in the epidemiology of this disease entity with special reference to India and the effects of this pandemic on the environment. The time frame selected for review is the beginning of this pandemic to April 10th, 2020. Scopus® database is used to carry out the analysis. Moreover, the most contributed authors, institutions, countries, etc. are showed through the analysis. The purpose of this review is to get an idea about the direction of the flow of current research, the ass...

The demand of the product is price reliant. Two situations to handle the imperfect items are analyzed: selling them at a reduced price and reworking them. The demand is assumed to meet with perfect products in either case. Further, the study incorporates the carbon-emissions borne during production of goods and their holding in the inventory system. The model aims at maximizing the profit function by jointly optimizing mark-up price and production quantity. To demonstrate model characteristics, numerical and sensitivity analysis are also presented.

The inventory produced by the supplier undergo a machine-shift and hence, produces non-conforming items. The retailer uses the preservation technology to deal with deteriorating items ingeniously where the demand is price-sensitive at the buyers end. Two models are developed through different means viz. Integrated and Bi-level approach and compared so to impart some constructive organizational insights. Sensitivity analysis was done over a numerical example to validate strength of the developed models.

The most influential factor that affects a sales decision is the price of a product, which in turn, affects the configuration of the demand. Further, holding the produced goods means also the occurrence of deterioration as a common phenomenon, which may lead to excessive loss if left untreated. Thus, an investment in preservation process helps in controlling deterioration efficiently. Moreover, incorporation of the environmental factor presents the need of the hour in the current situation of environmental imbalance. To address the above issues, we consider volume agility to avoid any excessive storage and backlogging costs, carbon-emissions and energy-usage to address the performance of our model regarding the environment, and investment in preservation process to control the loss due to deterioration. Also, the demand of the product is taken as price-reliant. The investment in preservation, production rate, and price of t...

The production process is considered imperfect which results in the production of some imperfect quality items with known distribution. The imperfect products are managed through an efficient rework process that makes the items suitable to be vended at their original markup price only. The agile nature of the manufacturing process is considered. And, the energy usage and carbon emission in the production process is also considered. Undoubtedly, the fundamental nature of demand is sensitive to price. Thus, the model incorporates the demand to be price-contingent. The objective is to maximize the overall inventory turnover by conjointly optimizing the selling price, production rate, and production time. A numerical example is included to validate the model. Further, the sensitivity analysis unfolds valuable managerial insights for decision-makers. Findings suggest that the model with the insertion of volume agility effect performs better when compared with the one without the volume agility.
