The term 'womb' is an organ in the lower abdomen of female body, which is particularly associated... more The term 'womb' is an organ in the lower abdomen of female body, which is particularly associated with pregnancy. Metaphorically, womb is perceived as the origination of things that are brought to life with the pour of an intense feeling of affection. The womb is an act of creation, a document of maternal procreation. This article is a refl ective reading of 'Womb Document', a solo painting exhibition by a feminist female artist, Dewi Candraningrum. She tries to move away from what is considered aspure, selfreferential and apolitical art. Artwork is a feminist narration. Clusters of her mostly female portraiture paintings and sketches represent multiple faces of womb, which have been resided in the margins of hegemonic discourse. She uses aesthetic conventions in her visual artworks, which are different from those applied in the canon. Dewi has considered visual artworks as part of political arts, which should take a side and emancipate the considered Others.

Film is a system of representation, which provides information of social dynamics during the peri... more Film is a system of representation, which provides information of social dynamics during the period, when the film is produced and distributed. This study is aimed to identify and reveal how teenage selfconcept is discursively constructed through film imagery and narrative in the context of Indonesian society. This study focuses particularly on the physical and psychological teenage self-concepts. The analytical Corpus is eight films for teenagers which were produced from the 1970s through the 2000s.Through the application of Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis, a detailed examination of these films reveals that there are similarities, modification and differences in the way in which teenage self-concept has been constructed from decade to decade. This study also identifies that teenage self-concept has been constructed through various discourses, among other things good versus bad teenagers, role model seeking, and of teenage lifestyle.

The main indicator of gender issue in pesantren is a striking gap between men and women. Themes related to this issue actually are not new for novels in Indonesia. Some novels related to pesantren usually portray women as helplessness, subordinate, inferior, and marginalized. However, in Perempuan Berkalung Sorban (PBS) novel, the author tried to empower women through his writings. Women in PBS novel was portrayed as smart, brave, and critical towards pesantren’s hegemony such as power relation between santri (students) and kiai (teachers), the understanding of classical books (Kitab Kuning), social relations between men and women in pesantren, and so forth

It could be seen from the proliferation of images of what so-called “female individualism”. In this sense, women are depicted as being independent, success, beautiful and empowered. These images are followed by the rise of images of less superordinate and less powerful men than as previously required by patriarchal order. Subject-object relationship in terms of gender becomes fluid and interchangeable, as if the problem of inequality is already fixed and resolved. Such media images of postfeminism and postmasculinism are, in fact, disembedded and disconnected from the real problems of gender prevailed in the society. Those images tend to celebrate feminist success, but at the same time devaluing and negating feminist political activism. Applying Guy Debord's idea of spectacle to examine how urban life is transformed into visualization and commodification, also George Ritzer’s idea of re-enchantment of the disenchanted world and the new means of consumption. This article is aimed to analyze the position of apartments in the urban space of Yogyakarta that is discursively constructed through apartment promotional media. The conclusion of this research shows that apartments are functionalized to create the spectacle of the city. Urban space and life are aestheticized and spectacularized, in which apartments are displayed as part of dramatic and extravagant urban arts. Power is dispersed, exercised, and diffused in every locus of social life, including in practices of smartphone usage by urban women. Women are facing a wide variety of domination in their everyday life which comes from various directions. Their feminine identity often used as the reasons for subordination and oppression. Using ethnographic method, this research aimed to describe the way of urban women use smartphone not only as a communication instrument but also as a political apparatus. By using smartphone, women are able to negotiate, appropriate and even resist the existing identities offered by dominant culture.

The Selfiecity research project (2014) demonstrates that selfies are mostly done by women. However, there is little research related to the so-called ‘hijab selfie’. Hijabed women deal with the tension between religious norms and their desire to be recognized. This paper considers the practice of hijab selfies using Foucault’s concept, technologies of the self. This study also applies Theo van Leeuwen’s social semiotics. This study is based on the compilation account @jilbab_chantik, an active account with more than 39,000 followers. Instagram is considered a space to celebrate the freedom of self-representation. Attention is indicated by the number of likes, comments, and increasing follower numbers. The methodology used here was qualitative by observation, interview and documentation. The study found that pragmatically, space in library can be defined by aspects of function of space, requirement for information, availability of WiFi facility, and phys-ical material. Meanwhile, in ideological contestation, library space can be defined by aspects of historical space and paradoxical space.

In the Expert System Utilization diagnose malnutrition in toddlers using the appropriate Bayes theorem to be applied to this problem. With this expert system, it can make it easier for the community or Pagar Merbau health center agency to make decisions through alternatives and criteria obtained from information or data managers. Penelitian ini menganalisis anime berjudul Kimi no Na Wa (2016) sebagai sebuah arena dengan melihat beberapa adegan tertentu. Tujuannya adalah untuk melihat bagaimana subjektivitas gender dan perbedaan seksual itu dibentuk di dalam anime ini. Dengan menggunakan metode psikoanalisis feminis film dari Laura Mulvey dan Kaja Silverman, penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa struktur naratif dalam anime ini masih dipengaruhi oleh male bias. Hal ini berpengaruh pada bagaimana pembentukan subjektivitas gender yang menjadikan perempuan sebagai objek tatapan sedangkan laki-laki sebagai subjek yang menatap. Reality show merupakan jenis tayangan televisi yang semakin diminati, dan bahkan mampu menempati ... more Reality show merupakan jenis tayangan televisi yang semakin diminati, dan bahkan mampu menempati posisi prime time di Indonesia. Kemiskinan dan kehidupan kaum miskin merupakan salah satu tema yang cukup populer yang diangkat dalam tayangan realitas ditelevisi.Tulisan ini membahas fenomena tayang anrealitas di Indonesia, khususnya bagaimana program tayangan realitas mengkonstruksi ibadah keagamaan dan distingsi kelas. Empat tayangan realitas yang disiarkan pada momen bulan suci Ramadan 1432 H yaitu Bukan Puasa Biasa(TransTV), Orang Pinggiran (Trans7), Jika Aku Menjadi Ramadan (Trans TV), dan Big Brother Indonesia (Trans TV) menjadi focus kajian dalam tulisan ini. Kajian mendalam terhadap ke empat tayangan realitas tersebut menunjukkan bahwa ada proseses tetikasi dan obyektifikasi realitas kemiskinan guna mendefinisikan dan menggarisbawahi ibadah kelas.Tayangan realitas tentang kelas bawah cenderung menampilkan banalitas pesan tentang kemiskinan.Realitas hidup dan ibadah agama kelas bawah hanya menjadi project bagi kelas diatasnya untuk memperbaiki kualitas spiritual keagamaannya dan untuk membangun citra positif tentang sikaya. Persoalan kemiskinan, pada akhirnya, hanya dianggap sebagai problem individual yang bisa dilalui atau diatasi dengan religiu sitas dan ketekunan ibadah individual.

Based on our study in Yogyakarta, we found a new internet cafe style that we did not find in other cities. This study offers a new understanding of analyzing internet cafes that users not only consume a computer to access the internet, but they “consume” space as well. This study aims to explore that transformation and to reveal the expansion of consumption patterns. This study emphasizes the empirical investigation to gather the data. We conducted qualitative in-depth interviews and observations from January to June 2018. We also examined several previous studies about internet cafes to expose a gap that can be extended in this study. The news report of Tempo.co about both Ahmad Fathanah and Ratu Atut Chosiyah corruption cases too... more The news report of Tempo.co about both Ahmad Fathanah and Ratu Atut Chosiyah corruption cases took the discourse of mother and women as the main idea. Mother and women were involved in both cases that tend to be reported exaggeratedly with a huge sensation by using connotation dictions. Media disclosed not only their scandal in corruption but also personal and private life. The motherhood feature of those women become the underlined a major issue in the news. This research focused on three concerns: the discourse formation of (re)motherhood in the news report of both corruption cases, the subject position of mother and women in the news, and the reason why the discourse of mother and women become the main topic in the news report. Critical discourse analysis by Sara Mills was used for showing how media has constructed subject-object and reader positioning on the news. The result showed that the discourse of motherhood was not only reproduced by the nation, but also by the news in online media (Tempo.co). Media has ideological instruments (i.e. wording, grammar, and reader position) to narrate, to evaluate, and more important to define the role of mother and women to fix with the conventional socio-cultural values. They have represented mother and women as independent and modern subject and at the same time, they also circumscribed the definition to make sure that they remain in the ideal type: as the guardian of the family, the companion of the husband, and the guide of the children.

Approximately 30% of Salafi women in Imam Muslim Islamic Boarding School Kediri have worn hijab shar’i as their preference. This article describes the aesthetic practices of shar’i hijab and the factors behind it. This study applies a qualitative approach using a case study as a research method in which it observes the social reality of shar’i hijab aesthetic practices among Salafi women at Imam Muslim Islamic Boarding School. The research analyzes the case and situation that occurred and also attempts to understand the informants’ point of view. Through literature studies, participatory observation, and in-depth interviews, the study found that the informants have been wearing two different shar’i hijab; dark colors and bright colors. Instagram is one of the most popular social media platforms used by societies, with one of the ke... more Instagram is one of the most popular social media platforms used by societies, with one of the key groups being female travelers. Nowadays, Instagram does not only become a social space, but it is also a space of identity construction, or an “identity workshop”. Traveling is one activity which is often found on women’s Instagram accounts. It is an activity chosen by women to show their personal authority. The purpose of this paper is to understand how female travelers use Instagram as their “identity workshop”. This research analyzes the Instagram account of a female traveler, Claudia Kaunang’s (@claudiakaunang) by applying virtual ethnography methods. Alongside this, the research uses Angela McRobbies’s postfeminist theory which focuses on ‘empowerment’ and ‘choice’. The research findings confirm that a female traveler constructs herself to be what she wants through Instagram.

This study refers to the theory of Lefebvre (1991) on social practice. Space in Lefebvre’s terminology is always a social space, so library space is assumed to be a social product. This study used ethnography with six digital native users as informants collected purposively. The data collection techniques were observation, interview, and literature study. The result showed that there was functional shift in UGM library space which were initially only for studying, then they became third space. Kajian mendalam terhadap ke empat tayangan realitas tersebut menunjukkan bahwa ada proseses tetikasi dan obyektifikasi realitas kemiskinan guna mendefinisikan dan menggarisbawahi ibadah kelas.Tayangan realitas tentang kelas bawah cenderung menampilkan banalitas pesan tentang kemiskinan.Realitas hidup dan ibadah agama kelas bawah hanya menjadi project bagi kelas diatasnya untuk memperbaiki kualitas spiritual keagamaannya dan untuk membangun citra positif tentang sikaya. Persoalan kemiskinan, pada akhirnya, hanya dianggap sebagai problem individual yang bisa dilalui atau diatasi dengan religiu sitas dan ketekunan ibadah individual.

Based on our study in Yogyakarta, we found a new internet cafe style that we did not find in other cities. This study offers a new understanding of analyzing internet cafes that users not only consume a computer to access the internet, but they “consume” space as well. This study aims to explore that transformation and to reveal the expansion of consumption patterns. This study emphasizes the empirical investigation to gather the data. We conducted qualitative in-depth interviews and observations from January to June 2018. The news report of Tempo.co about both Ahmad Fathanah and Ratu Atut Chosiyah corruption cases too... more The news report of Tempo.co about both Ahmad Fathanah and Ratu Atut Chosiyah corruption cases took the discourse of mother and women as the main idea. Mother and women were involved in both cases that tend to be reported exaggeratedly with a huge sensation by using connotation dictions. Media disclosed not only their scandal in corruption but also personal and private life. The motherhood feature of those women become the underlined a major issue in the news. This research focused on three concerns: the discourse formation of (re)motherhood in the news report of both corruption cases, the subject position of mother and women in the news, and the reason why the discourse of mother and women become the main topic in the news report. Critical discourse analysis by Sara Mills was used for showing how media has constructed subject-object and reader positioning on the news. The result showed that the discourse of motherhood was not only reproduced by the nation, but also by the news in online media (Tempo.co). Media has ideological instruments (i.e. wording, grammar, and reader position) to narrate, to evaluate, and more important to define the role of mother and women to fix with the conventional socio-cultural values. They have represented mother and women as independent and modern subject and at the same time, they also circumscribed the definition to make sure that they remain in the ideal type: as the guardian of the family, the companion of the husband, and the guide of the children.

Approximately 30% of Salafi women in Imam Muslim Islamic Boarding School Kediri have worn hijab shar’i as their preference. This article describes the aesthetic practices of shar’i hijab and the factors behind it. This study applies a qualitative approach using a case study as a research method in which it observes the social reality of shar’i hijab aesthetic practices among Salafi women at Imam Muslim Islamic Boarding School. The research analyzes the case and situation that occurred and also attempts to understand the informants’ point of view. Through literature studies, participatory observation, and in-depth interviews, the study found that the informants have been wearing two different shar’i hijab; dark colors and bright colors. Nowadays, Instagram does not only become a social space, but it is also a space of identity construction, or an “identity workshop”. Traveling is one activity which is often found on women’s Instagram accounts. It is an activity chosen by women to show their personal authority. The purpose of this paper is to understand how female travelers use Instagram as their “identity workshop”. This research analyzes the Instagram account of a female traveler, Claudia Kaunang’s (@claudiakaunang) by applying virtual ethnography methods. Alongside this, the research uses Angela McRobbies’s postfeminist theory which focuses on ‘empowerment’ and ‘choice’. The research findings confirm that a female traveler constructs herself to be what she wants through Instagram.

This study refers to the theory of Lefebvre (1991) on social practice. Space in Lefebvre’s terminology is always a social space, so library space is assumed to be a social product. This study used ethnography with six digital native users as informants collected purposively. The data collection techniques were observation, interview, and literature study. The result showed that there was functional shift in UGM library space which were initially only for studying, then they became third space. UGM library space as social space is inseparable from and always related with social realities around them.
