Using a mixed methods approach, the potential explanatory factors of the level of student engagement in learning in a respected English Higher Education institution are explored. By calculating how many days within the semester the median student accessed the Virtual Learning Environment [VLE] per module [n=562], each is categorised as having 'High', 'Medium' or 'Low' student engagement. The outcomes are supplemented by a thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with Module Leaders. The results suggested that engaging Blended Learning courses have a higher number of formative assessments, more recordings available, are delivered in a way that is best suited for the student cohort (whether that be remote, in-person or hybrid), and have resources on the VLE of a higher quality than quantity. To maximise student engagement, Module Leaders should interweave active learning and didactic teaching in their seminars and lectures, have a high level of enthusiasm for the subject material, and have a strong ability in the educational technology available to them. It can be concluded that in transforming the way Module Leaders are trained, and in how they build and deliver their blended learning courses, we may create a shift towards a higher level of student engagement. There are important lessons here for senior leaders in terms of how they understand blended learning, how it relates to their values and vision, and what strategies they might use to encourage and plan for best practice.

Understanding the interaction between cooperation and conflict in establishing effective social b... more Understanding the interaction between cooperation and conflict in establishing effective social behaviour is a fundamental challenge facing societies. Reflecting the breadth of current research in this area, this volume brings together experts from biology to political science to examine the cooperation–conflict interface at multiple levels, from genes to human societies. Exploring both the exciting new directions and the biggest challenges in their fields, the authors focus on identifying commonalities across species and disciplines to help understand what features are shared broadly and what are limited to specific contexts. Each chapter is written to be accessible to students and researchers from interdisciplinary backgrounds, with text boxes explaining terminology and concepts that may not be familiar across disciplinary boundaries, while being a valuable resource to experts in their fields.

Using Precey’s (2015) framework for effective transformative leadership, the authors analyse the values-based leadership decisions and actions taken to minimise any widening of the attainment gap between the most vulnerable pupils and their peers, as a direct consequence of lockdown. The authors examine the gap between the directives from central government and their implementation in the local community. They explore three key facets of transformative leadership: Firstly, the type of values-driven leadership that is most likely to be effective, both now and in the future. Secondly, they consider the importance of learning at all levels of the institution, for leaders, teachers and pupils. Thirdly, drawing on rhizomatic theory as an illustration of the complexity of the coronavirus crisis, they propose the attributes required for leaders to be even more effective: Principals with principles. The authors conclude that the shock of the pandemic is a clarion call to transform edu-cation, arguing that school leaders need better preparation to lead in complex, sometimes ambiguous circumstances. The authors advocate a more community-minded approach to school leadership, along responsible, rather than responsive lines. They call for the prioriti-sation of training, for both current and future leaders, in transformative approaches, so that they can prepare children for life in the post-pandemic “new normal” and beyond

They seek to explore these parallels in particular the use of storytelling. Methodology: The chapter first unpicks the notion of storytelling and goes on to examine the idea of behavioural change and the connection between the two. It goes deeper by rooting this in adult transformational learning. This is then linked to some real-life examples (recruitment and consultancy) of storytelling and adult learning. Findings: The chapter considers some implications for the use of narrative for leaders moving forward into a post-pandemic world. Value Added: Combining narrative with adult learning theory and comparing the world of business with education. Recommendations: It is our hope that examination of this intersection will provide lessons relevant to both the education and business professions.
