Research paper thumbnail of A Multi-resistance Plasmid Isolated from Commensal Neisseria Species is Closely Related to the Enterobacterial Plasmid RSF1010

Microbiology-sgm, 1986

pFM739, an R plasmid from Neisseria sicca that encodes penicillin, streptomycin and sulphonamide ... more pFM739, an R plasmid from Neisseria sicca that encodes penicillin, streptomycin and sulphonamide resistance, and the enterobacterial IncQ(P-4) plasmid RSFl 010, which encodes streptomycin and sulphonamide resistance, were incompatible, and were mobilized by the same conjugative plasmids. Restriction mapping confirmed a high degree of similarity between both R plasmids; pFM739 carried DNA fragments corresponding to the known replication and resistance regions of RSF1010. pFM739 also carried an extra segment with the same restriction map as that described for the /?-lactamase-coding region of transposon Tn3. It is suggested that the R plasmids isolated from commensal Neisseria sp. could have resulted from transposition of a Tn3-like genetic element to an RSF1010-like plasmid, and that they contain deletion derivatives of transposon Tn3.

Research paper thumbnail of Kinetics of the chemical reduction of nitrate by zero-valent iron

Chemosphere, 2009

The use of reactive barriers is one of the preferred remediation technologies for the remediation... more The use of reactive barriers is one of the preferred remediation technologies for the remediation of groundwater contamination. An adequate design of these barriers requires the understanding of the kinetics of the reaction between the target contaminant and the solid phase in the barrier. A study of the kinetics between metallic iron and aqueous nitrate is presented in this paper. Published literature regarding this reaction indicates that researchers are far from a consensus about the mechanism of this reaction. This paper presents the results obtained from experiments performed at different constant pH values and iron dosages, together with a mathematical analysis of the kinetic results. We have found that an Eley-Rideal kinetic model yields a good explanation of the relatively complicated dependence between rate of nitrate reduction and the pH value of the solution.

Research paper thumbnail of Chronic arthritis aggravates vascular lesions in rabbits with atherosclerosis: A novel model of atherosclerosis associated with chronic inflammation

Arthritis and Rheumatism, 2008

Atherosclerosis was induced by coupling a hyperlipemic diet with an endothelial lesion at the femoral arteries, while chronic AIA was induced by ovalbumin injection. Markers in sera and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) as well as vessels and synovial membranes from the rabbits with the double phenotype (both chronic AIA and atherosclerosis) were compared with those from rabbits with each disease alone. Two models of atherosclerosis and chronic AIA were combined. NF-κB binding and CCL2 and cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) expression were higher in PBMCs from rabbits with both chronic AIA and atherosclerosis than in PBMCs from healthy rabbits. The intima-media thickness ratio of femoral arteries was equally increased in rabbits with atherosclerosis alone and in rabbits with both chronic AIA and atherosclerosis, but the latter group showed a higher level of macrophage infiltration. Femoral CCL2 and COX-2 expression was increased in rabbits with both chronic AIA and atherosclerosis as compared with rabbits with atherosclerosis alone. In the aortas, vascular lesions were found in 27% of rabbits with atherosclerosis alone and in 60% of rabbits with both chronic AIA and atherosclerosis. Rabbits with both chronic AIA and atherosclerosis exhibited more severe synovitis and higher synovial expression of CCL2 than did rabbits with chronic AIA alone.Serum levels of interleukin-6, C-reactive protein, and prostaglandin E2 increased in rabbits with both chronic AIA and atherosclerosis as compared with healthy animals or animals with either chronic AIA alone or atherosclerosis alone. This model could represent a novel approach to the study of inflammation-associated atherosclerosis. The onset of chronic AIA in animals with atherosclerosis resulted in the local and systemic up-regulation of mediators of tissue inflammation and plaque instability associated with a higher incidence of aortic lesions.
